Chapter 172: Are You Smiling?

At that moment, Lin Tian noticed a group of extras sitting in the lounge area near the window. They appeared restless, sneaking glances his way with expressions both excited and conflicted.

"They’re all trainees aspiring to become professional musicians," He Zhichen explained casually, noticing Lin Tian’s gaze. "When they heard this MV was for Moonlight and Cat, everyone scrambled to help out."

Scrambled to help? Lin Tian found it amusing. So even these kids were fans of him and Gan Yanyu.

"Do you want to go say hello?" He Zhichen suggested.

"Huh?"

Lin Tian hadn’t misunderstood—he simply didn’t see the point.

"This is Moonlight's first time appearing in front of so many people," He Zhichen pressed. "Building a good reputation within the industry is important. It never hurts to start on the right foot."

"Alright… I’ll wait for Miss Gan," Lin Tian said thoughtfully. "They’d probably prefer her, right?"

"Impossible."

He Zhichen cut him off sharply. "Compared to Gan Yanyu, an outstanding performer, these aspiring musicians idolize composers like you far more. You’re their dream come true."

"Is that so?" Lin Tian sounded genuinely surprised.

Perhaps he had grown too accustomed to being overshadowed by Gan Yanyu’s brilliance. In her presence, he often felt invisible—just another shadow eclipsed by her radiant light. He had forgotten how revered his online persona truly was.

"These trainees practically worship you," He Zhichen whispered conspiratorially into Lin Tian’s ear. "Seeing you now—young, handsome—they must be bursting at the seams with admiration."

There was no escaping it now. With a resigned sigh, Lin Tian walked over to the group.

One of the trainees spotted him approaching and immediately lit up, nudging those beside them frantically.

"Look, look!"

"Whoa, whoa—he’s coming over!"

A ripple of hushed whispers spread as all eyes turned toward Lin Tian, anticipation crackling in the air.

As Lin Tian reached them, a girl with fiery red hair shot to her feet, stammering nervously.

"M-Moonlight… sir… hello…"

Her words tumbled awkwardly from her lips as she stole shy glances at his face. Her meticulously made-up cheeks flushed crimson, clearly overwhelmed by his unexpected charm.

"Hello."

Lin Tian offered a reserved smile.

"Mr. Moonlight, I’ll give my absolute best during today’s shoot!" another boy declared, standing abruptly despite his obvious nerves.

"Me too!"

"We won’t let you down, Mr. Moonlight!"

In unison, the trainees vied for attention, eager to impress their idol—even though Lin Tian hadn’t said a word yet. Their enthusiasm was palpable.

"Mm."

Lin Tian couldn’t help but find their earnestness endearing. Unlike seasoned performers worn down by the industry grind, these fresh-faced trainees still carried an untainted passion for music—and for the legendary composer before them. There was something pure about their fervor, a reminder of simpler times when dreams burned brightest.

"Young beginners chasing after their aspirations are always full of fire and sincerity," Lin Tian mused silently. "Once they grow older, that purity fades."

"For the upcoming ensemble performance, do your best," Lin Tian encouraged, gesturing briefly before turning away.

The trainees erupted into animated chatter the moment he left.

"Oh my gosh, I couldn’t tell from afar earlier, but Mr. Moonlight is so handsome!"

"On the way here, Brother Chen mentioned he’s still preparing for college entrance exams."

"A true genius composer… To witness him in person is such a blessing."

The redhead cradled her violin dreamily, lost in reverie. "Handsome, talented—and just now, he smiled at me! If only I could kiss those lips and have him write a song for me, I’d die happy."

"You’re getting ahead of yourself," one of her companions teased, exasperated. "Moonlight belongs to Cat-chan."

"..."

While the scene continued to be set up, Lin Tian returned to the piano and began testing the sound. As he played, his brows furrowed slightly.

Yesterday’s reflections had yielded a plan—a method to overcome Gan Yanyu. And he intended to use it during today’s filming.

But this plan came with risks. If it failed, the cost would be steep. Perhaps catastrophic.

It might shatter his resolve entirely. Leave him vowing never to love again. Maybe he’d retreat into a life like Liu Yong, wandering through pleasure quarters as a carefree musical poet, indulging in worldly pleasures while crafting songs for fleeting romances.

The rhythmic click of heels echoed through the cafĂ©.

"I’m late," a tall figure announced, stepping inside.

Instantly, every eye in the room—including Lin Tian’s, He Zhichen’s, and the nearby staff and trainees—snapped toward the newcomer.

"...wow."

She took their breath away.

Her face bore minimal makeup, just enough to accentuate her natural beauty. Sapphire earrings dangled delicately from her ears, catching the light. Jet-black hair cascaded loosely over her shoulders, framing her elegant features. A sleek purple gown hugged her form, adorned with a single flower at the waist. Around her neck hung a delicate crystal necklace, resting against her graceful collarbone.

Standing there, she radiated elegance and poise—but also an almost doll-like charm. She was breathtaking.

So beautiful, Lin Tian thought involuntarily.

Today’s Gan Yanyu seemed different from her usual stage persona. Less formal, more confident, and somehow warmer. Especially around her lips...

She wore a faint, persistent smile—as if savoring the anticipation of a delightful rendezvous.

"Miss Gan," Lin Tian called softly.

"Hmm?"

"Are you smiling?"

The question slipped out before he could stop himself.

"Am I?" Gan Yanyu tilted her head, puzzled.

"Yes," Lin Tian confirmed.

"Maybe I’m thinking of something pleasant," she murmured thoughtfully.

"You’ve been smiling nonstop," Lin Tian pointed out.

"..."

Curious, Gan Yanyu pulled out her phone and checked her reflection in the dark screen. Sure enough, the corners of her mouth curved upward ever so slightly.

Realizing this, she burst into genuine laughter, her joy infectious. Watching her, Lin Tian instinctively covered his own mouth, struggling to suppress a grin.

Caught red-handed, Gan Yanyu raised a slender finger, pointing accusingly at Lin Tian’s face.

"You’re smiling too."

"Me? No, I’m not."

"Yes, you are."

Their gazes locked, each trying—and failing—to suppress their widening smiles. The inexplicable mirth seemed contagious, though neither could pinpoint why.

How strange, Gan Yanyu thought. Why did seeing Lin Tian suddenly make her feel so lighthearted?

After regaining composure, Lin Tian straightened his expression and rose to his feet. Walking steadily toward Gan Yanyu, he extended his hand with quiet determination.

"Before we begin filming," he said solemnly, "shall we try dancing together first?"
