Chapter 153: The Perfect Synchronization

"Miss Gan," Lin Tian said, his expression stern.

"Hmm?" Gan Yanyu tilted her head, feigning innocence.

"Do you realize what you just said? Are you trying to make me lose my mind?"

"What are you talking about?" She blinked at him with wide, guileless eyes.

"...You're too much," Lin Tian muttered under his breath.

Her words were so disarmingly cute that it was almost dangerous. If she kept this up, he wouldn’t be able to hold back from doing something reckless. For a fleeting moment, he admitted to himself that he had nearly fallen for her act—almost let his guard down completely.

But now that she’d played the innocent card, how could he possibly press the issue? Instead, he settled for a gentler approach.

"If you wanted him to leave, there were better ways than pushing him to his limits like that. You weren’t exactly giving him room to breathe."

Performing with Gan Yanyu was like boarding a luxurious cruise ship—a dazzling invitation filled with promise. Onlookers saw the glamour and excitement, thinking they could simply jump aboard and share in her brilliance. But once they stepped foot on deck, they realized their mistake. This wasn’t a leisurely voyage; it was a pirate ship, ready to plunder anyone who dared intrude upon Gan Yanyu’s musical domain.

Anyone foolish enough to covet her talent would soon find themselves torn apart by the tempest of her spirit. Lin Tian felt both exasperated and amused by her antics.

"Well," he sighed, "I guess I can’t blame you for wanting only me around."

He shook his head lightly, unable to suppress a small smile. "Enough talk. Let’s play Por Una Cabeza."

"Mm," Gan Yanyu nodded, picking up her bow once more. With a graceful sweep, she began to draw the first notes from her cello.

The melody unfurled like silk, weaving its elegant rhythm into the air. It didn’t take long for the crowd to grow curious.

"Huh? I’ve never heard this one before," remarked a young man in the audience. Unlike many others who were merely there for the spectacle, he was a devoted fan of Moonlight and Cat. He prided himself on knowing every piece they’d ever released—but this song eluded him entirely.

His friend, an avid TikTok user inundated with algorithmically curated content, echoed the sentiment. "Yeah, no idea where this came from. Whose composition is it?"

"Forget whether you’ve heard it or not," interjected another bystander with a grin. "Doesn’t the melody itself feel... captivating?"

And indeed, it did.

The music swayed between highs and lows, exuding a sense of sophistication and elegance. Listening to it felt like wandering through a high-end shopping mall, surrounded by polished marble floors and gleaming chandeliers, basking in an atmosphere of carefree luxury. When Lin Tian joined in on the piano, the harmony soared even higher, reaching a crescendo that electrified the entire street.

The energy rippled outward, igniting smiles across the faces of everyone present. Even the young fan couldn’t help but think back to the behind-the-scenes footage of Moonlight and Cat playing Can-Can Dance, where playful banter and laughter accompanied every note. Was that same warmth hidden beneath the masks of these performers as well?

---

Gan Yanyu closed her eyes, her heart swelling with uncontainable joy.

This was it—the kind of euphoria she’d always dreamed of experiencing. If their earlier performance had been enjoyable, it was the violinist’s arrival that truly elevated things for her. His presence served as a catalyst, proving something she already knew deep down:

No one could keep pace with her and Lin Tian. Their connection was unique, unparalleled. Anyone who tried to join them without understanding their rhythm didn’t belong in their world.

A faint smile tugged at the corners of her lips. Though she felt a pang of guilt when Lin Tian called her out, she couldn’t deny the satisfaction bubbling within her. Was this what romance felt like? She wasn’t sure. But in the passionate strains of the tango, she found everything she needed.

In that moment, the music became hers—not just as a performer, but as someone fully immersed in its essence. As Lin Tian’s piano reached its peak, a gentle breeze swept through the street, scattering petals from nearby camellia trees onto the bookstore’s doorstep. The scene was nothing short of magical.

Everyone watching wore expressions of pure delight, their hearts lifted by the infectious cheerfulness of the performance. The young couple in the crowd exchanged glances, wondering if the masked duo might be lovers themselves. If so, it seemed like a wonderful partnership.

Perhaps the departure of the violinist hadn’t been such a loss after all. Initially, some may have regretted losing the grandeur of a trio. But now, seeing the two musicians side by side, it felt… perfect. There simply wasn’t space for a third person in their dynamic.

---

"Ah," Lin Tian thought, feeling a wave of clarity wash over him. This was the true extent of Gan Yanyu’s skill.

He remembered the time she nearly dragged him into the abyss while performing Symphony in G Minor: "Pathétique." Back then, her playing had plunged him into Mozart’s fragmented psyche. But today, instead of darkness, she led him to a dazzling ballroom—a dreamlike stage where they could dance freely.

As his fingers danced across the keys, Lin Tian experienced something extraordinary. For a brief instant, he truly felt as though he were waltzing alongside Gan Yanyu, hand in hand. The sensation was indescribable—both absurd and utterly real—and it lingered in his mind long after the final note faded.

Was this the view Gan Yanyu always saw when she played? Her music wasn’t just sound; it was a portal to another world.

---

When the piece ended, applause erupted from the gathered crowd. Some snapped photos, while others shouted their praise, their voices ringing out in admiration.

"I did it, Lin Tian," Gan Yanyu said, her eyes shining with pride. She had captured the essence of Por Una Cabeza flawlessly. While it lacked the dramatic twists of traditional tango, it radiated a different kind of charm—one brimming with joy and elegance.

"Lin Tian?" she called out, turning to look at him. To her surprise, he remained seated, lost in thought.

"Lin Tian?"

"Oh," he murmured, snapping out of his reverie. "The performance’s over."

"Yes," she replied softly.

Together, they walked to the front of the bookstore, bowing deeply to the applauding audience like actors taking their final curtain call. Then, without another word, they began packing up their instruments.

"What were you thinking about just now?" Gan Yanyu asked as she carefully placed her cello back into its case.

"Not much," Lin Tian replied casually, saving the recorded video onto his phone before stowing it away along with the tripod. Yet, despite his nonchalant tone, his mind was still replaying the moment they’d shared earlier on.

For the first time, he hadn’t merely mimicked Gan Yanyu’s emotions—he had synchronized with her completely, heart and soul. He understood now why he often joked about how perilous it was to perform with her. Because when he truly connected with her music, the experience was so vivid it bordered on surreal.

Almost frighteningly so.
