Chapter 51: The Seed of Despair
What does it take to ascend to the Second Ring?
Viya had done some research.
First, the ascender’s "spiritual perception" must reach an overflow state.
Next, they need to prepare the appropriate "offering" for their respective kingdom, re-enter the Void Domain, and once again knock on the gates of the great realm.
Finally, by passing the corresponding trial, the ascender completes their upward transcendence.
It sounds simple, but in reality, countless considerations make the process daunting. Just determining whether one is in an "overflow" state alone stops nearly half of all aspirants.
And that’s not even considering how to find their "kingdom" within the Void Domain or complete the subsequent trials—each step a headache-inducing challenge.
If even one of these steps goes wrong, the entire ritual must be restarted, rendering all expended resources and effort wasted.
Viya understood she was different from ordinary people, blessed by a higher being, which would undoubtedly make the process easier.
But she never imagined it would be this easy!
No pilgrimage to the great kingdom, no miracles or spiritual perception—just a single sentence.
The wooden planks above began to crack as the enraged nightmare lord smashed through layer after layer of stairs, closing in with brute force.
With the help of the "Half-Knowledge Eye," Viya could effortlessly track her surroundings, even in the darkest depths.
Her left hand opened and clenched swiftly, calming the chaotic mana surge caused by her ascension.
At that moment, the wooden planks above finally gave way, shattering to reveal the glowing silhouette of the informant. Its hoarse, furious roar echoed throughout the spiral corridor.
Feeling the rush of wind from its approach, Viya didn’t dodge. Instead, she loosened her grip on the staff, letting it slide down before gripping the end tightly and swinging it with full force.
The informant raised its arm, clad in jagged metal fragments, to block. Sparks flew where the staff met the armored limb, vanishing in an instant as the two figures passed each other.
Clang, clang, clang... Several more intense collisions followed. If the informant possessed intelligence, it would surely be baffled by how this "prey" had grown so powerful.
Though still outmatched in terms of raw strength, Viya now matched it blow for blow without faltering.
Charging thrusts, sweeping spins—the magical steel artifact, originally meant for casting spells, had been reduced to nothing more than a halberd in Viya’s hands, trembling under the force of repeated impacts.
After dodging a sideways swipe from the informant, Viya paused, closing her eyes.
A deep, ethereal glow slowly climbed from the base of the staff to its tip. Invisible ripples spread outward, accompanied by faint, lingering echoes of song.
After ascending to the Second Ring, Viya could sense that Siren’s Requiem had undergone some kind of transformation—or perhaps growth.
[Siren’s Requiem]
- Effect 1: Generates a domain upon activation. The range depends on the user's rank. It amplifies negative emotions within the domain significantly and plants seeds of fear with attacks.
- Effect 2: Seeds of fear further amplify enemies' negative emotions and grant the user’s attacks partial penetration against affected targets.
- Effect 3: Plants a seed of despair on the most powerful enemy within the domain. Attacking a target with the seed of despair deals 20% of the attack's damage to all enemies within the domain afflicted with seeds of fear.
"Sister, when will we return to the cradle?"
During their earlier exchanges, Viya confirmed something:
The seeds of fear could stack with the seed of despair!
This created a near-frightening qualitative leap in group battles. Earlier, in the endless corridor, she and Edith had barely managed to maintain a fragile balance against the mist beasts, inching forward with painstaking difficulty.
But now, without any assistance, Viya could fight through hordes of mist beasts in pitch darkness while maintaining the same speed as if she were exploring with light and stealth.
In single combat, while the effects weren’t as game-breaking, they still provided a significant boost.
Viya used the shattered staircase to launch herself into the air. The staff, wrapped in deep luminescence, became the sole source of light in the darkness. With great force, she thrust downward. The informant swung its armored arm to block.
The third exchange began.
...
The Corridor
"Sister, are you feeling better?"
Ivy knelt before Edith, a faint green laureate hovering above her small head. She gently placed her hands at the edges of Edith’s wounds, and the grotesque scars began to heal visibly.
"Mm."
Edith’s voice sounded weary.
The mist beasts seemed to have ceased their assault following the informant’s arrival, granting them precious time to rest.
"That person..."
Ivy thought of the beautiful older girl, worry evident in her tone.
But she stopped mid-sentence as a finger pressed against her lips.
"That person is surely dead. Facing a nightmare lord alone offers no chance of survival."
Edith’s words were cold and unyielding.
To defeat a lord like the informant, a standard exploration team required four members who had collected all the hidden letters to weaken the boss beforehand.
Even then, victory was uncertain unless extraordinary measures were taken.
Edith could think of only two scenarios where success might be possible against a fully empowered, enraged lord:
One, an absurd stroke of luck—two full Second Ring teams, twelve people total, banding together to confront the boss.
Two, a squad of four highly experienced explorers, such as her colleagues from work, meticulously preparing in advance.
Either way, immense cost and sacrifice would be required.
"Still, this is partly her own doing."
Edith sighed.
There was no hatred in her tone.
The other girl had likely returned to reality after dying. Given the vast number of floating islands, they might never meet again. Rather than dwelling on blame, Edith decided to focus on regrouping with others.
...
"It’s about time."
After dozens of clashes, Yog’s indifferent voice echoed in Viya’s ears. She leaned back, narrowly avoiding the informant’s strike. The tip of her staff grazed the armored limb, severing it cleanly.
Arcs of azure light slashed repeatedly, carving deep gashes into the informant until it finally lost balance, exposing a critical opening.
In that moment of imbalance, Viya drove the tip of her staff into a gap in the informant’s armor. Gripping the front end tightly, she twisted the sharp blade, shredding flesh and bone before pulling it out sideways.
Black blood sprayed everywhere.
Simultaneously, the informant’s last sliver of health bar vanished.
Finally—it was over.
Viya exhaled deeply, genuinely relieved. Though most of the battle hadn’t involved her directly, the oppressive presence of the nightmare lord still left her trembling.
Fighting the Banshee had been different. Each attack from the informant was sharp, precise, and lethal, often landing mere moments before she narrowly avoided them.
Suddenly, the ground began to shake, reminiscent of what happened in the corridor.
Though she couldn’t see clearly in the darkness, the changes in her peripheral vision made her breath catch.
The glowing silhouette of the nightmare lord rose again, moving slowly. Whether it was an illusion or not, its demeanor had changed.
If it had been driven by instinct before, every movement now radiated human-like confusion and disorientation.
"I... Talichia…fa…"
It muttered incomprehensible phrases, then suddenly stopped, clutching its head. Its voice shifted into a pained roar.
Chaotic mana gathered in the informant’s hands. Raising its right arm high, it plunged it forcefully into its chest. Fragments of its shattered armor flowed inward, drawn by some unseen force.
As its arm withdrew, a twisted greatsword composed of armor shards emerged, glowing with a crimson light.
At that moment, the health bar that had disappeared reignited, accompanied by Yog’s calm yet teasing voice:
"Bad news—it has a second phase."
This truly was bad news… Viya stared at the towering, glowing figure, swallowing hard.
