Chapter 39: Lin Qi’s Plot Speculation
"So, the blessings from the gods in the Void Domain are actually useful in the main storyline, not just for unlocking skill books?"
Lin Qi suddenly felt a strange sense of déjà vu. He had initially dismissed the blessings he received in the Void Domain as minor perks—something everyone got—but now it seemed that wasn’t the case at all.
Doesn’t that make the protagonist some kind of divine heir?
Why else would the gods bestow their blessings upon her?
"I get it!"
Lin Qi slammed his fist into his palm, a spark of realization lighting up his mind.
"The heroine was exiled from the divine realm as a child! Her hometown is at the end of the rogue-like levels, and those gods who blessed her are actually her distant relatives—her seventh uncle or eighth granduncle or something!"
Now that made sense!
Of course, this was all pure conjecture on Lin Qi’s part, based loosely on another game’s plot. The chances of it being accurate were effectively zero.
He refocused his attention on the game.
"You have one minute to introduce yourself," Viya said coolly.
Lucian understood what she meant and kept his response concise.
"Lucian Moro, direct subordinate of Modred, overseer of the Esoteric Sect. My mission is to deliver newly manufactured gray powder back to the church."
The Esoteric Sect…the Esoteric Sect?!
Viya’s eyes widened in shock. She knew this name all too well—the infamous illegal cult organization.
When she was little, her mother used to scare her with stories about them whenever she refused to sleep. As a result, Viya would wrap herself tightly in blankets every night, terrified of what lurked in the dark.
"Gray powder?"
Lin Qi latched onto the unfamiliar term. His sensitive radar for buzzwords, honed by years of live-streaming gameplay, was blaring alarms.
"Yes, three hundred grams of gray powder with addictive-suppressing properties. It’s all here." Lucian lifted the cake box slightly to emphasize his point.
Lin Qi had heard of addictive substances before, but "addiction-suppressing"? That was new.
Did it somehow turn people into lazy slackers after one use?
That sounded… abstract, to say the least.
"Are you new to this city?" Lucian asked, assuming the seemingly young girl standing before him was likely a saint from another branch of the imperial church.
He continued, "Do you require our assistance?"
Lucian planned to take this mysterious saint back to the Esoteric Sect and let his superiors handle the situation.
"That depends on what kind of help you can offer me," Viya replied evenly.
"Of course, but I must ask you to accompany me to the church. Please forgive my inadequate explanation."
Lucian gave a slight bow.
Lin Qi typed into the chatbox, feeling an unsettling sense of walking straight into a den of thieves.
"Sure."
---
In Lin Qi’s imagination, the headquarters of an evil cult like the Esoteric Sect would probably be something out of a horror movie—dark, damp, filled with bizarre rituals, and walls smeared with blood. A prime example would be the abandoned textile factory they’d encountered earlier.
He admitted he might have been relying on stereotypes.
Reality, however, was far more polished. The Esoteric Sect rented expensive real estate in the heart of the city and ran Rothesia’s largest art gallery. The employees wore neatly pressed suits, spoke elegantly, and engaged confidently yet humbly with upper-class visitors, introducing each piece of artwork with pride in its storied history.
"You’ve gone a bit extreme," Lin Qi muttered, gazing at the walls covered in honorary certificates. For once, he found himself unusually silent.
"Lady," Lucian began, "as our doctrine states, we pursue the most primal form of beauty."
"Every painting you see here is breathtaking. Unlike the so-called 'masterpieces' flooding the market, these works need no embellishment, no love-hate narrative to give them meaning—they are inherently beautiful."
Lucian removed a frame from the wall, gently blew off the dust, and replaced it with satisfaction.
No wonder the Esoteric Sect had managed to thrive in Rothesia for so long… Viya thought, utterly speechless. Even the current executor probably wouldn’t guess that their prestigious institution was secretly a hotbed of cult activity.
If it were up to me… forget it, I probably couldn’t even afford the entrance fee… Viya recalled the exorbitant ticket prices and quickly dismissed the idea.
Lucian approached a man surrounded by several others.
"Mr. Byron, there’s something that requires your attention. It pertains to our side business."
At the mention of "side business," Byron’s eyes narrowed momentarily before he turned to the group of lavishly dressed nobles with an apologetic smile.
"My apologies, but I must excuse myself. It seems this pleasant afternoon has come to an end."
"Not to worry, Director Byron. We simply hope for a 'complete' pleasant afternoon in the future," one lady purred, deliberately emphasizing the word "pleasant." Her unsubtle remark drew low chuckles from the men around her.
"There will be such a day, Lady Maracline," Byron responded wittily, maintaining just the right amount of distance in his tone.
After dealing with the nobles, he turned to Lucian, his voice dropping.
"What is it?"
"Overseer, we have a new saint," Lucian whispered, subtly nodding toward the young figure standing behind him.
A new face… freshly chosen, perhaps? In Byron’s perception, she radiated only a single ring of power. This could mean she was genuinely low-tier, or perhaps hiding her true strength. But Byron leaned toward the former.
He wasn’t surprised that this saint was only a single ring.
Every saint had a purpose tied to their creation. If the Esoteric Sect were a highly efficient machine, the saints would be its most critical gears—small but capable of driving the entire behemoth forward.
If she had been chosen, it meant there was a mission only she could fulfill, regardless of her rank.
"Let’s discuss this inside." Byron cleared his throat and instructed a nearby attendant, "Close the gallery early today. After seven, I don’t want to see any outsiders here."
As usual, Lin Qi scanned the art gallery. One glance was all it took for him to reach a conclusion.
His eyes hurt.
It seemed the corridor had been designed to complement the paintings on display, painted in a riot of clashing colors that left him dizzy and disoriented.
This is the second time… the second time I’ve taken “real damage” playing this game… Lin Qi mentally noted this moment.
He watched as Byron pulled out a key, unlocking a hidden compartment beside him to reveal a concealed passageway.
It was a staircase, descending endlessly into darkness, lit only by flickering purple candlelight. Far from alleviating the sense of dread, the faint glow only added to the eerie, cavernous atmosphere.
The stark contrast finally reminded Viya that she wasn’t attending some refined art seminar—she was dealing with a centuries-old cult entrenched across multiple empires.
As for Lin Qi…
"Finally," Lin Qi murmured, staring at the screen as the pivotal branching path of the game loomed ahead.
Would the protagonist infiltrate the cult undercover or join forces with them? The next decision would determine everything.
