Chapter 146: The Professional Musician at the Art Exam
A professional pianist? That guy? A professional pianist his age, who had performed at Qingtian Hall just last month?
Wu Qi’s mind went blank. He felt like someone had swung a sledgehammer straight into the back of his head. Everything suddenly clicked into place—except it didn’t make sense. How could the words "professional pianist" and "art exam candidate" possibly coexist?
Inside the examination hall, the judges were equally dumbfounded. None of them could have imagined that such a level of performance would appear in a provincial music exam. But now, everything made sense.
Why Lin Tian always seemed so indifferent. Why he breezed through the sight-reading test without breaking a sweat. Why he didn’t care about the murmurs of other candidates around him. Why, even when Wu Qi had approached him earlier with bravado, Lin Tian hadn’t batted an eye.
It wasn’t arrogance—it was detachment. To Lin Tian, none of this mattered. A professional musician taking an art exam? It was like showing up to a middle school math test after years of teaching calculus. Boredom, apathy, and perhaps even mild amusement were all he felt.
He came, played his piece, and left, scrolling through his phone while waiting for his turn. Any surprises along the way were met with a shrug and a faint smile.
“No wonder,” Wu Qi muttered bitterly, his lips curling into a rueful grin. “No wonder he carried himself like that.”
That aura—the one Wu Qi had spent years trying to emulate—wasn’t something you could fake. And now, standing on the other side of it, Wu Qi realized how far apart they truly were. In Lin Tian’s eyes, no one here, not even Wu Qi, was worthy of being called an “interesting opponent.”
Wu Qi sighed deeply. There was no point pretending anymore. This must be fate—a cruel joke from the heavens. What were the odds of running into a professional musician during an art exam? Now it seemed like the second place would be the best outcome he could hope for.
As the exam room door opened and Lin Tian stepped out, Wu Qi pushed through the crowd to greet him.
“Lin Tian, sir,” Wu Qi said earnestly.
Lin Tian blinked, confused. “Sir?” He turned to see Wu Qi standing there, looking both humbled and sincere.
“It’s an honor to take this exam alongside you,” Wu Qi continued. “Thank you for becoming the role model we all needed. You deserve to be this year’s top scorer.”
Wu Qi’s words held genuine admiration. Having shed his mask, he finally understood. If anyone was destined to inspire others, it was the young man before him. Whether Lin Tian accepted it or not, he was now the beacon of hope for every student present—including Wu Qi himself.
“Though I appreciate the compliment…” Lin Tian scratched his head, chuckling awkwardly but lightly, “…I’m not sure the top spot is mine this year.”
Before Wu Qi could respond, cheers erupted from the opposite end of the corridor.
“What the hell…”
“Is this even human?”
“Oh my god, we ran into a celebrity musician at our art exam!”
Amidst the chaos, Wu Qi froze. Encountering one professional musician at an art exam was already like striking gold. Running into two? That defied probability entirely.
Lin Tian, however, didn’t linger to chat further. After bidding Wu Qi farewell, he quickly headed toward Gan Yanyu’s examination venue. Not long after, he spotted her emerging from the building, surrounded by adoring fans.
If Lin Tian’s appearance had been the biggest surprise for piano students, Gan Yanyu’s arrival was nothing short of a superstar event among cello players. Practically every cello student in Qingjiang Province knew her name.
At first, many recognized her face vaguely from the square but weren’t certain until she began playing. As soon as her bow drew across the strings, their musical DNA awakened. For cellists, seeing Gan Yanyu perform live was akin to chess players meeting Magnus Carlsen at a tournament or gamers spotting a legendary streamer at their local internet cafĂ©. It was a dream too grand to imagine.
“Miss Gan, can we get a photo with you?”
“Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I’m in the same exam hall as Gan Yanyu!”
“She just won the Starlight Cup last week, and now she’s here taking the art exam with us. Unreal!”
Surrounded by enthusiastic candidates, Gan Yanyu looked overwhelmed. She wasn’t used to this kind of attention and felt dizzy under the barrage of requests.
“Um… okay,” she stammered softly. “Let’s take a group photo, shall we?”
Carefully, she raised her phone and switched to selfie mode. Behind her, a sea of eager faces crowded together. Someone noticed her stiff expression on the screen.
“Smile, Miss Gan! Smile!” urged a girl nearby.
“Yes, everyone loves your smile!” added another voice from the back.
“Alright,” Gan Yanyu replied hesitantly, forcing a smile onto her face.
“Three, two, one—”
Click.
Cheers erupted again as the photo was taken. Gan Yanyu glanced at the image, scanning the youthful faces filling the frame. Then, tucked away in the back row, one figure caught her eye.
“Lin Tian?”
She whipped her head up, spotting the familiar youth standing a short distance away. Her face lit up instantly. Pushing past the crowd, she rushed over to him.
“You’re here! Why didn’t you tell me?”
“You were busy posing with your ‘little fans,’” Lin Tian teased.
“They’re not my fans! You know I’m terrible at this sort of thing,” Gan Yanyu protested, though her tone was playful.
“How did your exam go?” Lin Tian asked.
“It was fine. Despite the noise outside, I couldn’t hear much inside, so it didn’t affect me too much.”
“A minor issue compared to holding light sticks at the Starlight Cup, right?” Lin Tian joked, earning a laugh from her.
He glanced down at her phone, where the group photo still displayed. “Hmm, Miss Gan, your smile looks so forced. Doesn’t suit you at all.”
“It does look bad,” Gan Yanyu mumbled quietly.
“Then let’s delete it.”
With that, she tapped her phone, ignoring the stunned expressions of the surrounding students. With a skip in her step, she joined Lin Tian, walking shoulder-to-shoulder as they disappeared into the distance.
