Chapter 140: The Unified Art Exam Day

Lin Tian stared into the mirror, still in a daze.

You know what? Despite often teasing Miss Gan for thinking like someone from another century—like an old man who's never touched the internet—when it came to aesthetics, she really knew her stuff.

Just a simple center-part hairstyle, under her guidance, had layers that fluffed just right, giving him a relaxed yet polished look. It was a subtle transformation—from a Japanese-style messy fringe to a more refined Korean-inspired part.

It didn’t sound like much, but damn it worked.

He looked like one of those idol trainees you see on TV. With his looks and this new hairstyle, he could easily be mistaken for a K-pop hopeful walking down the street. And while everyone might mock GAI for being effeminate or not knowing how to play basketball, no one ever said he was ugly, did they?

This kind of fresh, youthful charm actually fit Lin Tian perfectly for today’s art exam. A high school student with such a clean-cut, boy-next-door vibe would probably go over well with the judges.

In fact, Lin Tian had already thought up his opening line: "Good morning, esteemed judges! My name is Lin Tian, and I love singing, dancing, and rapping..."

But before he could finish, Gan Yanyu suddenly asked, "Hey, have you figured out what you're going to wear tomorrow?"

"Art exams are big on presentation too," she reminded him.

"Is my outfit not okay?" Lin Tian glanced at his clothes. He'd just been told by Miss Gan that his style had improved dramatically. Now she was turning around and calling it bad?

Was it all just backhanded compliments again?

"Nope," she shook her head, "you need something more formal."

"What about a denim vest with a black T-shirt underneath? Maybe add a basketball if I can?"

Gan Yanyu blinked at him, confused. "Are people really dressed like that?"

Lin Tian mentally facepalmed.

Still, she wasn't wrong. While the unified provincial exam had strict rules and no makeup allowed, the university-level auditions were another story entirely. They were brutal beauty contests where every student tried to bring their best dating-game-night energy to the table. Especially during the interview rounds.

Students from all over Zhonghua gathered in one place—big-city girls with louder voices, better communication skills, and confidence enough to tower over others even in heels. Meanwhile, the quiet little potatoes from the south could only watch from the sidelines, trembling in awe.

So yeah, putting in some extra effort with your appearance was definitely worth it.

"How about a white shirt?" Gan Yanyu suggested.

"Sounds good," Lin Tian nodded. "When in doubt, a white shirt always works. For average-looking guys, it at least gives the impression of cleanliness. If you act polite and composed, people might even think you smell nice. And for handsome guys like me? Well, it’s like walking male pheromones—so good, even the most germophobic person would want a taste."

Then he turned to her, curious. "And what about you, Miss Gan? What are you wearing?"

After all this talk about his own outfit, she hadn’t mentioned anything about herself. Probably planning to rock a vintage or literary-style dress again. That kind of look suited her well and would definitely stand out in the exam hall.

"I haven’t decided yet," she shrugged, "I’ll figure it out later."

December 12th – The Provincial Music Exam Day

The long wait was finally over. Days of preparation, late nights, endless practice—it had all led to this day.

At 6:20 AM, even earlier than the Starlight Cup final, Lin Tian was up and ready. After applying a quick touch-up of makeup using Gan Yanyu’s technique, he packed everything, slipped into a crisp white shirt and gray slacks, and carefully combed his hair into a mature, presentable style.

Not long after, his phone buzzed. Gan Yanyu messaged him to go ahead without her—they’d meet at the university entrance. Considering how much time she needed to prepare, especially for an important event like this, he understood.

She was probably going all out today. Another chance to see Miss Gan in a brand-new look. Just the thought made him feel a little excited.

With that, Lin Tian stepped out the door.

The exam location was at Qingjiang Conservatory of Music, one of the oldest and most prestigious music schools in the country, ranked sixth nationally. Though it lagged behind the fifth-ranked Xingye Conservatory of Music in reputation, it still held great historical weight and remained the official venue for Qingjiang’s annual music exam.

Arriving at the campus, Lin Tian followed the directions and found himself standing in the crowded square.

Rows upon rows of students stood in neat lines, each group waving flags bearing bold names like:

- Qingjiang King Art Academy
- Chuangyi Music Training Base

These were all local art training institutions. Lin Tian had done some research beforehand—almost all art students relied on these places for training before the exam, and many high schools had partnerships with them. On exam day, they arrived in groups, led by their trainers, like soldiers marching to war.

Each flag represented a unit. It felt almost like a collective invasion.

Some institutions were so respected that when their students appeared, the crowd would immediately shift their attention. One of them, Chunchou, had dominated the Qingjiang provincial rankings for three years straight. Currently regarded as the top institution in the province, its presence alone drew whispers of admiration, envy, or even resentment.

After all, the exam room was a battlefield, and every student here was a potential competitor.

Among all the organized, uniformed squads, Lin Tian stood alone. No team, no banner, no training background—just a lone self-trained artist.

A personal trainee in a sea of professionals.
