Chapter 9: What Do You Mean, an Exam in an Ancient Language?

---

The next afternoon.

With nowhere to stay, Viya had no choice but to rent a room at a hotel for the night. And she quickly came face-to-face with just how absurdly high prices were here.

Six silver coins per night? Was this some kind of robbery?

One silver coin equaled one hundred copper coins, and the average monthly salary of someone from the outer rings was only around thirty silver coins... Just doing the math mentally made Viya’s scalp tingle.

But fortunately, the exam would last only two days, and results would be announced immediately afterward. If she passed, she’d move into accommodations provided by the academy; if not, she could catch a ride home straight away. Either way, it meant she wouldn’t have to keep spending money like this.

It was a small mercy in an otherwise unfortunate situation.

---

According to tradition, Rothesia Academy's entrance exam consisted of two parts: a written test and a practical assessment.

The written portion accounted for fifty points, and most years, that same score was also the passing grade—though there were exceptions. In "hotter" batches (as the students called them), the cutoff could rise to seventy or eighty points depending on competition levels.

Viya entered the examination hall alongside other candidates, trying to bolster her confidence as she walked. She kept reminding herself to stay calm under pressure.

But soon enough, she realized this exam might have nothing to do with her.

“Viya” flipped open the test paper and stared blankly at the questions without picking up her pen.

[Explain why, in a Faroli environment, magical energy flows from high-density objects to low-density ones (5 points).]

Seriously? They’re actually testing us?

That complicated question gave Lin Qi a headache.

He wanted to shout at the game developers: We paid top dollar for your game—is this seriously all about taking exams?!

Did they really want players to refund within two hours of starting?

Yes, even though Lin Qi had already played for five or six hours, he’d wasted time wandering aimlessly after missing the main storyline clue early on. Otherwise, by now, he’d barely be ten minutes into the game according to normal progression.

“It’s time to call in modern technology.”

Lin Qi solemnly opened a search engine and painstakingly typed out each word from the question.

He figured the problem was likely based on existing theories—find the original source material, and solving it would become easy.

Five or six minutes later...

“Nothing.” Lin Qi put down his phone expressionlessly.

Looking back at the screen, a new theory began forming in his mind—

Perhaps before this exam, there was supposed to be a side quest containing the answers. He must’ve missed it, which explained why everything felt so confusing now.

That explanation made perfect sense.

Reassured, Lin Qi filled in some half-hearted answers.

---

When she was younger, Viya used to fantasize about having a sister—a brilliant, scholarly sister who could take exams for her. That way, Viya wouldn’t need to study hard but could still ace every test.

Her mother had laughed off the idea back then, teasing, “Reading too much gives you hallucinations.”

But now!

Here was someone actually taking the exam for her—and this person was hundreds of times smarter than any so-called wise scholar!

Viya couldn’t fathom how she could possibly fail this test.

After seven or eight minutes, “she” seemed to have skimmed through all the questions and began writing furiously with her sleek steel-nibbed pen.

Her speed was astonishing—pages turned every few seconds.

In the silent examination hall, the crisp sound of flipping pages was almost musical.

To everyone else, however, it wasn’t quite so pleasant.

Less than ten minutes into the exam, and someone had already finished the first page?

Rothesia Academy, being the premier institution in Rothesia, towered above its peers academically. Its students didn’t expect anyone here to skip questions carelessly or joke around during such a critical moment.

Moreover, most examinees were outsiders unfamiliar with the academy’s rhythm and question formats.

What if…

What if this pace was actually normal?

The atmosphere in the room grew tense. Under such immense pressure, many candidates’ nerves began fraying.

As for Viya?

She was starting to feel overwhelmed too.

Watching her own hand glide across the page, filling in answers one after another, Viya felt a growing unease.

But—

[Explain why, in a Faroli environment, magical energy flows from high-density objects to low-density ones (5 points).]
Answer: FDGOJOHSD

[Discuss the impact of Vorfal, the contemporary regent of Poye, providing at least three points (12 points).]
Answer: SAIFOKJBF

[Explain…]
Answer: DSIOWLKWVCX

What on earth was this nonsense?

Viya was stunned.

Suddenly, something occurred to her.

Hemoric language, the ancient language, was said to be the only tongue capable of harnessing natural forces. It was hailed as the divine language blessed by the gods.

Could it be possible that what “she” wrote was actually in Hemoric language?

Viya didn’t know for sure, but she trusted that while the gods might not be omniscient as depicted in holy scriptures, they certainly wouldn’t make mistakes like this.

Even if these answers differed from what was expected, the fault lay with the test-makers, not her.

All she knew was—

This exam was doomed!

If luck was on her side, maybe some knowledgeable examiner would see potential in her bizarre responses and award partial credit amidst controversy.

More likely, though, her answers would end up in the trash bin.

Within fifteen minutes, “Viya” had completed the final question—a freebie worth two points.

[What was the gender of the second king’s wife in the Laron Kingdom?]

Viya chuckled bitterly. If only she could laugh freely right now.

---

An hour and a half passed in the blink of an eye. Candidates trickled out of the exam hall, their expressions ranging from relieved smiles to deep worry. Some hopped into luxury cars driven by waiting parents and sped off dramatically.

Life was full of contrasts, yet joy and sorrow remained unshared.

Viya always prepared for the worst-case scenario. Already, she was contemplating how to maximize her score in the upcoming practical exam. She planned to visit relevant forums to gather intel—perhaps there’d be useful rumors floating around.

But the entity controlling her body clearly had other ideas.

“New map, fresh start—it’s time for an epic exploration!”

Lin Qi scanned the surroundings. Buildings rose and fell like waves, each brimming with untold stories. His initial plan to find unique landmarks fizzled when he realized none stood out distinctly.

After chatting briefly with passersby, he guided his character toward the central square, where a simplified map of the city hung alongside snippets of historical anecdotes about certain structures.

After a quick review, Lin Qi settled on his next destination—the Saint Rowan Cathedral.

For the same reason as before: in worlds of swords and magic, churches often held extraordinary significance.

From a design perspective, this was prime territory for hidden narratives. The developers wouldn’t miss the chance to embed side quests here.

Maybe he’d encounter a priest spouting hellish jokes, a saint destined to save the world, a demon of repressed desires, or secrets tied to the Seven Deadly Sins

Whatever awaited him, one thing was certain: Heading there was the right move!
