Chapter 28: Siren

---

Cold—that was the only sensation Viya felt at this moment.

It was as if she were standing on a beach, with the seawater repeatedly soaking her ankles, yet no breeze stirred the air.

An empty expanse of sea stretched before her—no islands, no birds flying overhead, no leaping fish. All that remained was a thick fog so dense it refused to dissipate.

This was a dream.

Viya was certain of it.

Her last memory was from that afternoon—after learning His name, an overwhelming wave of fatigue had washed over her, prompting her to fall asleep early.

That was her second thought.

Her mind was clear, unclouded by any haze.

The thick fog obscured her view of the distance. After taking a few steps forward, she realized her feet were submerged in water up to her ankles, as though she were walking on the surface of the sea.

She paid no attention and continued forward. The mist seemed to shift in a rhythmic pattern, guiding her direction.

Soon, an enormous ice wall emerged before Viya’s eyes.

She tilted her head upward.

The walls extended far into the ocean, forming a grand castle forged entirely of ice. Its magnificence was such that even the most skilled artisans in the world would pale in comparison to its craftsmanship.

But Viya quickly noticed something unusual—the castle seemed to be encased within the ice… no, rather, an ice wall separated her from the castle.

Hah, how interesting—to dream of a fantastical castle floating above the water… Viya amused herself with the thought. As a child, she had once fantasized about becoming a princess one day, but those naive dreams had long since been washed away by time.

“No way out?”

Viya turned around, only to find that the rear and sides were already enveloped in thick fog.

Wait! There’s something inside the ice wall!

When her attention shifted away from the striking castle, she suddenly noticed a blurred face deep within the ice.

Viya leaned closer, nearly pressing against the ice wall.

At the same time, the face became slightly clearer—long, light blond hair, hands resting on her chest, eyes closed, expression serene. It was practically a mirror image of Viya Fanyar.

Th… That’s me?

Viya recoiled several steps in shock.

To encounter someone with the exact same face as hers, sealed within ice, in such a bizarre dream—it was genuinely unsettling.

This sea… no, wait. Sea? She vaguely remembered the Revelation mentioning the deep sea… Amidst her fear, her mind raced, and a sudden realization struck her.

Suddenly, a beam of light pierced through the mist, spilling onto the ocean's surface.

In an instant, the thick fog dissipated, and auroras arched across the heavens. The seascape transformed into a surreal, dreamlike vista.

The breathtaking scene left Viya breathless. She momentarily forgot her earlier terror, completely immersed in the beauty before her, unable to tear her gaze away.

Crack, crack, crack… Cracks began to appear on the ice wall in front of her, and sunlight melted it further.

The massive chunks of ice did not float on the surface but plummeted straight into the depths.

Unconcerned with the falling ice, Viya’s eyes remained fixed ahead.

Plop.

Bare feet gently stepped onto the surface of the sea, ripples spreading outward in fine waves.

The woman who bore the same face as Viya slowly opened her eyes.

They were beautiful eyes—like all the light refracting into them simultaneously, yet without causing any discomfort. Instead, they made the gem-like violet irises shimmer brilliantly.

So beautiful… Viya was stunned. She had never seen such captivating eyes.

“New believer, you have arrived,” the woman softly closed her eyes again.

Believer… Is she referring to me?

So it truly is the will of that presence… Viya had already suspected as much, and now this statement confirmed her thoughts.

Realizing the other party wouldn’t harm her, Viya cautiously asked:

“Who are you?”

“I have no name.” The woman shook her head, her movements always carrying a fragile quality. “If you need a title, call me the Minstrel.”

The Minstrel… Viya committed the name to memory.

“Then, Lady Minstrel, could you let me return?” Viya asked carefully.

“It is not yet time.” The Minstrel shook her head again. “You have no right to leave until you complete Mr. Yog’s task.”

Mr. Yog? Oh sh—

Viya silently cursed under her breath.

She had already sensed the subtle difference in His attitude toward sentient beings, but hearing His apostle refer to Him as "Mister" still made her temples throb uncontrollably.

“He does not care, nor will He ever care.” As if reading Viya’s thoughts, Lady Minstrel stated flatly.

Sounds like there’s a story here… Viya took a deep breath and asked:

“What should I do?”

“Sing.”

Sing?

Viya froze.

She couldn’t comprehend why, in this divine realm, an apostle so deeply connected to the deity would personally intervene just to teach her how to sing.

“Sing,” the Minstrel confirmed with a nod. “But not with your mouth.”

Then what? My stomach?... Viya imagined the absurd scene and stifled a cough, preventing herself from continuing down that train of thought.

“Language carries mana. Singing to evoke emotions is an innate talent of our race,” the Minstrel explained.

Our race… Viya finally noticed faint bluish-green scales on the Minstrel’s wrists and neck.

Combined with the highly distinctive trait of singing, she immediately understood the Minstrel’s race.

Siren!

Unlike Void Domain creatures like Ice Icefield Wolves or Banshees, Sirens were pure-blooded mythic descendants. If the Void Domain had a food chain, their ecological niche would undoubtedly reside at the very top, alongside dragons and hydras.

So they really exist… Viya marveled.

“We humans need to use our mouths to sing,” she gently reminded.

“That is not my concern,” Lady Minstrel said. “Only by mastering our Siren method of singing can you leave.”

How unreasonable! Humans’ physical structure is entirely different from Sirens’. How could we possibly learn?!

After steadying her breathing and calming her emotions, Viya attempted to communicate further with the other.

But Lady Minstrel spoke first:

“You will not die here, but pain remains.”

Before Viya could grasp the meaning of the latter half of the sentence, her gaze sharpened, and her body instinctively retreated several steps.

A strange thing occurred—when faced with danger, perhaps due to muscle memory, her body always moved first, while she herself often failed to react in time.

Splash—

A massive slash cut through where she had been standing moments ago, sending waves splashing.

The water defied gravity, rising and intertwining, solidifying into armored soldiers wielding swords.

Viya looked at the approaching water soldiers, then glanced at her empty hands.

“If you expect me to defeat them, shouldn’t you give me a weapon?” she shouted.

Lady Minstrel sat down, and the water naturally supported her, allowing her to recline against a chair made of water.

This apostle of the divine spoke in a tone almost devoid of empathy:

“Your task has never been to fight.”

“But to learn how to sing.”

“Remember—do not open your mouth.”

As soon as the words left her lips, the water soldier reached Viya, raising its greatsword high and bringing it crashing down. Viya dodged awkwardly, rolling and scrambling across the water’s surface to put some distance between them.

She glanced back at the towering waves several meters high and swallowed hard.

Almost instinctively—

Viya took off running, deciding to strategically retreat and avoid further entanglement with this incomprehensible Siren lady.
