Chapter 12: Weapons I Have Three Rules for
---
In the private residence on the west side of Lunya Square, in the second-floor office area.
The scent of ancient incense wafted through the air, but it couldn’t dispel the oppressive atmosphere in the room.
Taking a sip of lukewarm water, Khan suppressed his anger and tossed the stack of papers onto the student’s desk. His tone betrayed no emotion:
“Take this and translate it yourself. See what nonsense you’ve written.”
Mithra instinctively shivered, swallowed nervously, and picked up the paper. Carefully, she fed it into the translation machine.
With a faint buzzing sound, words slowly appeared on the small display screen:
“Welcome, international friend Harry Cotia, to Rothesia for your travels.”
“You can take Line Two to reach our most impressive location.”
At this point, Mithra cautiously glanced up, observing Professor Khan’s expression.
“If your head gets confiscated during the ride, don’t worry—you can return via Line Three. You’ll need some money for the toll booth.”
“Upon arrival, we will enthusiastically criticize you to ensure an enjoyable visit.”
“…”
Mithra’s face contorted as her sense of humor clashed with her future prospects.
Glancing at the flushed-cheeked student, Professor Khan shook his head and sighed: “If you continue with this attitude, you won’t inherit Lord Noah’s title before you’re thirty.”
“But Professor,” Mithra protested, pointing at the translation device, “look how advanced technology is now. Just toss the paper in, and the result comes out. Isn’t it unnecessary to waste effort?”
Professor Khan shook his head: “We may rely on the derivatives of the Magic Web, but we must not depend on them. This is a lesson learned in blood.”
Mithra’s curiosity was piqued: “What lesson?”
“Sev—” Khan stopped himself, remembering that the person before him wasn’t an academic collaborator but merely an inexperienced youth.
He checked the clock and shifted topics: “Miss Mithra, you’re about to miss the practical exam.”
“Though I’m pessimistic about your academic abilities, I must admit that when it comes to stirring up trouble, you possess extraordinary talent beyond the norm.”
Taking it as praise for her initiative, Mithra twitched her lips and confidently replied: “Don’t worry!”
“This time, I’ll definitely impress both you and Father.”
---
After arriving at the examination hall, Mithra wasn’t as confused as the other candidates. She had already memorized the rules of the exam thoroughly.
The practical test—while many might assume it involved physical fitness evaluations or sparring matches with examiners—was far more stringent.
It was an exploration of the Void Domain.
For those ascending to the First Ring, whether to gain their laureates (the source of their spells) or pursue higher ascensions, exploring the Void Domain was an indispensable step.
The task? To venture as far as possible within that realm of unknown dangers.
Difficult, yet simple.
Though cliché, as long as one worked well with others, passing wouldn’t be an issue.
“Hmm—let me see if there’s anyone suitable,” Mithra scanned the surroundings, beginning her selection process.
She was choosing teammates.
Just being an Ascender like her eliminated 70% of the candidates.
Additionally, she didn’t want someone too strong—they’d likely be overly competitive, creating a tense atmosphere.
After surveying the crowd, she finally settled on her ideal candidate: That pale blond-haired examinee!
She looked harmless!
Perfect!

“Are you alone?”
“No, I’m Viya.”
Hearing Viya’s earnest response, Mithra wasn’t sure if it was meant as humor or if her phrasing had been misunderstood.
She muttered glumly: “Yes, I’m Viya.”
“What I mean is, do you have a team? If not, how about we pair up?”
To her surprise, Viya agreed almost immediately.
“Sure.”
This fast?
Mithra blinked, momentarily stunned.
Eventually, she attributed it to the other person not caring much about scores, prioritizing participation over results.
“Anyone else?” Viya asked next.
“There could be,” Mithra shrugged, scanning the room. “More people would make things easier, but the final score will be divided among everyone—it’s up to you.”
The academy hadn’t set a maximum limit for group sizes, but indirectly discouraged large teams by splitting rewards.
“This system…”
Lin Qi rested his chin thoughtfully.
He hesitated.
Should he bring the girl standing before him?
If he did, half the points would go to her. Though he didn’t know what the score was used for, higher numbers were surely better.
But leaving her behind…
Lin Qi feared missing out on potential plot developments.
After much deliberation, he decided to include her.
After registering at the front desk, Mithra smiled and asked: “By the way, I don’t know what kind of magic you specialize in?”
She added: “You don’t have to reveal too much, but at least as teammates, we should establish basic trust.”
“Teamates protection.”
Lin Qi gave this answer matter-of-factly.
As for how exactly he’d protect them?
That wasn’t something she needed to worry about.
“I have some offensive capabilities,” Mithra said cheerfully. “Looks like we’re in for a smooth journey.”
No matter how reckless the academy might seem, they wouldn’t pit students against truly dangerous monsters. The challenge lay more in navigating treacherous terrain.
While she wasn’t particularly skilled in combat, she was competent enough.
Protection… Hearing her own response, Viya recalled Old Fire Gang’s fate and those swift, clean killing moves.
Perhaps “protection” meant something different to higher beings than to ordinary folk.
They continued chatting as they ascended to the second floor of the hall, mostly Mithra doing the talking while Viya remained silent.
At the center of the second floor stood a slate-gray door, azure starlight spilling from its cracks, resembling flickering blue flames suspended in midair.
Two centuries ago, entering the Void Domain was a privilege reserved for a select few geniuses.
Now, that privilege was granted equally to all.
Viya gazed at the dreamlike stargate before her, feeling a faint sense of anticipation. She imagined what the Void Domain might look like.
In theory, every Ascender entered the Void Domain through a mental connection upon their ascension—but alas, Viya hadn’t ascended through conventional means.
“Aren’t you picking a weapon?”
Mithra approached, holding an elegant longsword. Its design resembled a ceremonial blade, but even though its structure wasn’t optimized for battle, in the hands of an Ascender, it could still become a deadly weapon.
“That reminds me.”
Lin Qi guided Viya to the weapon rack and began selecting.
“From experience, greatswords are powerful and often meta-defining—but playing them is boring.”
“Katanas look cool, but I don’t play them.”
“As for firearms… too underwhelming; I don’t use them.”
“Bows? At least they have better range than polearms…”
Listening to the murmurs in her ear, Viya silently noted these statements.
She didn’t understand them fully, but she knew there must be wisdom behind each word.
