Chapter 27: Expansion, Part 8

In the valley, the battle seemed to halt abruptly, plunging into an eerie silence.

The sound of wings slicing through the air shattered this sudden stillness, but Tagib’s reaction was swift. In the dark underground of Yhaggoroth, flying creatures existed—such as harpy or dragon-like beings—and among the spells passed down through generations, there were specific incantations to neutralize enemy air forces. For instance, anti-flight magic—precisely what this cave dweller witch doctor now employed.

He raised three fingers, forming a rough triangle with his index, middle finger, and thumb.

Tas Dam (Domain of Stillness).” Tagib’s sharp voice pronounced the two runes accurately. The witch doctor’s anti-flight spell was a form of runic magic—legend had it that these runes once belonged to the North Wind Witch before being lost to the world, later spreading widely among mortal casters.

In essence, the runes granted control over the atmosphere, and the size of the restricted zone depended on the caster’s power. A low-level witch doctor like Tagib could suppress no more than ten units of flight capability.

Moreover, casting it twice was unlikely.

Brandon looked up just in time to see the space in front of the ram-headed banner falter. Two archangels, seemingly locked by an invisible force, halted mid-air before plummeting from dozens of feet above, crashing heavily to the ground like meteors.

A hundred meters away, dust billowed.

“Ah.” Cinnabar mirrored the scene, exclaiming softly in surprise. Distracted for a moment, she took a heavy flail blow from a bear goblin.

“Focus. They’ll be fine,” Brandon steadied the staggering girl, showing little concern for his summoned angels. He turned his gaze away from that direction and instead asked, "How badly are you hurt?"

Cinnabar shook her head. The attack from the catalyzed bear goblin, barely at the initial stage of Silver Rank, held little threat against a Gold-Rank existence like herself. Moreover, as a Divine Messenger, her recovery and defensive capabilities far surpassed the average fighter.

Brandon nodded, letting go of the red-haired girl. He furrowed his brow, staring at the row of bear goblins gradually closing in. Compared to the predicament Tagib was about to face, his current situation was no less dire.

Surveying the encirclement, he murmured, “Retreat.”

Retreat?

Cinnabar blinked. They’d fought hard to carve a path here, barely a hundred meters from the cave dweller leader’s banner. Retreating now would render their efforts futile.

She glanced doubtfully at the fallen angels, wondering how confident the lord was in them. Their goal wasn’t merely killing Tagib; losing flight capabilities made subsequent tasks daunting.

“My lord?”

“Follow my command,” Brandon said firmly.

Cinnabar hesitated, then nodded reluctantly.

---

On the other side, as Brandon anticipated, Tagib found himself in trouble.

As a cave dweller chieftain, Tagib was knowledgeable—but only within Yhaggoroth’s underground. The airborne foes he encountered most often were harpy from dark swamps. Aside from those, few flying creatures existed underground.

Tagib prided himself on knowing not just harpies but also feathered serpents and legendary giant birds from the surface world—giant eagles.

Wind elves’ giant eagles. Historical records of his ancestors mentioned these creatures during surface-world wars. Why his predecessors ventured aboveground like him remained unclear, but the memory of those high-flying, massive, ferocious beasts left a deep impression.

Thus, when wingbeats sounded, Tagib instinctively reacted.

He knew that whether giant eagles, feathered serpents, harpies, or subterranean dragon-like beings, all shared one trait: losing flight rendered them clumsy on land.

Tagib extended this logic further, assuming any flying creature deprived of flight would become equally awkward—even cave dwellers using flight magic would stumble in the air.

A straightforward conclusion.

But Tagib hadn’t foreseen beings like angels or griffins—amphibious warriors—or dragons, which existed only in legends.

This oversight proved fatal. Tagib missed the chance to recall bear goblins for protection, expecting the humans to falter. Instead, he soon detected discordant sounds:

The ‘giant eagles’ that fell weren’t grounded—they charged swiftly, faster than imagined.

Tagib realized disaster struck. With only cave dwellers and a few elite warriors nearby, these rabble stood no chance against two silver-rank archangels.

Indeed, he soon ‘heard’ his personal guard scatter.

Then, cold blades pressed against his neck.

Using weapons implied intelligent humanoid adversaries—not giant eagles. In that instant, Tagib understood their intent but lifted his head, attempting to block their words with tribal pride.

“I… will… not… surrender.”

Stuttered Cruzean, learned from Grudin’s envoys.

The angels remained silent.

---

When Tagib spoke, the battlefield paused slightly. Cave dwellers’ acute hearing carried the exchange across nearly the entire field.

Brandon felt the shift, looking up to see the ram-headed banner fall.

However, bear goblins, less perceptive, continued their assault. Cinnabar, shielding him, sweated profusely, retreating steadily.

Brandon grabbed the girl’s collar, pulling her behind him, and swung his sword carefully—measuring his strength to avoid exhaustion while using wind slash to repel the massive beasts.

Even so, dizziness overtook him after the strike.

“My lord?” Cinnabar startled as her collar was grabbed but didn’t resist upon recognizing Brandon, asking curiously.

“We’re here,” Brandon replied.

Turning, she realized they’d reached the battlefield's edge.

“What now?” she panted, confused. Though she saw the fallen banner, it meant little. Even if Tagib died, cave dwellers at the lumber mill would continue attacking Antietta.

Their situation deviated from the original plan.

Brandon merely shook his head, retreating while snapping his fingers toward the forested slope. Soon, a silver streak emerged from the dark woods.

Their silver steeds.

Facing Clenxia and Frein’s expectant gazes, Antietta finally nodded. “Inform the apprentices to prepare spells.” Though the nearest cave dwellers were dozens of feet away, the noblewoman calmly stared at the wooden wall where mercenaries battled fiercely, maintaining her composed tone.

“Wait.” Yuta’s voice came from behind. Turning, they saw her cut down a cave dweller, carving a path to join them.

At the battle’s onset, the female mercenary commander had been inspecting her troops on the southern wall, struggling to return now.

Appearing, she called everyone’s attention.

Most spellcasters present were from her group. She understood their crucial role in this fight—but feared misunderstandings, as not all mercenaries experienced large-scale spellcasting.

“Only a few among our casters can use silence spells. Amplifying effects via formations will drain their strength too,” Yuta explained, catching her breath. “I’m saying we have one chance for such a large-scale silence spell—it’s effective, but are you sure to use it now?”

“No other choice,” Clenxia replied. “Lose the wall, lose the battle.”

“Drive them off to buy more time,” Frein added.

Yuta turned to Antietta. “And afterward?”

“Afterward…” Antietta glanced at the stars—it was late night. Calmly, she answered, “No afterward. Just wait for Lord Brandon’s victory.”

Her matter-of-fact response left everyone momentarily stunned.
