Chapter 25: Expansion, Part 6

A flash of lightning erupted in the darkness, brilliant as a festival firework. The blinding sparks pierced through three cave dwellers at the front line, spreading outward like an electric fan and dispersing into the ranks behind them.

A swath of cave dwellers collapsed.

Tagib was startled—but not by the sheer destructive power of Cinnabar’s strike. He understood that once strength reached the level of a "slave master," every movement carried exponentially greater lethality.

What truly shocked him was how quickly the frontline seemed to collapse after her attack. What was happening? Scanning the battlefield, Tagib quickly realized several commanding voices had vanished.

Several elite warriors had fallen, and these two humans seemed disturbingly familiar with their tactics. Tagib felt a pang of unease but had no time to mourn; the humans were advancing again, weaving through the chaos toward him.

Brandon and Cinnabar moved swiftly. Without organization, the cave dwellers couldn’t hold them back, and the distance between them halved rapidly.

Tagib wasn’t about to wait passively. However, each time he sent warriors forward, they were swiftly singled out and neutralized with surgical precision. After several failed attempts, he abandoned this futile effort—especially since he lacked enough elites to sustain such losses.

Nearly half a company of elite cave dweller warriors had been lost, leaving the witch doctor increasingly agitated.

Time was running short.

Glancing around, Tagib noticed the towering bear goblins guarding him. He decided it was time to unleash these formidable fighters, the tribe's most reliable combat force. But as the two humans drew closer, Tagib wasn’t willing to risk dying here without a fight.

He gestured—a spell component. The Cave’s Blessing, which sacrificed vision to temporarily enhance combat prowess. For iron-rank bear goblins, this could elevate their strength to silver-rank levels.

This was black magic, harmful to his subjects, but Tagib didn’t know that. Witch doctors inherited their craft through bloodlines, passed down as blessings from ancient cave witches. No thought was given to his rationality.

Raising three withered fingers, he sprinkled ash and cast Blind Blessing, granting the bear goblins blindsight. Trained for blind combat, this posed no challenge.

Every resident of the underground knew this truth: Eyes are superfluous.

Finally, Tagib pointed forward and emitted a sharp cry. His command was simple: intercept the humans or at least delay them, buying time to reorganize his panicked kin.

He knew human stamina was finite. Even now, his keen hearing detected the heavy breathing of the woman. This was a test of endurance, but Tagib believed victory would ultimately belong to the cave dwellers—a lesson learned from countless battles.

Listening to the bear goblins’ heavy steps, he ordered his remaining guards—though their quality varied greatly—to cover his retreat.

"These accursed humans," Tagib muttered inwardly.

---

To Brandon and Cinnabar, the situation looked different. Cinnabar felt on the verge of collapse. She had never fought like this—two people charging headlong through thousands. It sounded heroic, but the physical toll was far greater than usual.

She lost count of how many enemies she’d slain—over a hundred, perhaps more. Initially unstoppable, fatigue soon set in, making progress grueling.

The arcs of lightning extending from her halberd, once over ten feet long, now barely surrounded her body. Unsure how much longer she could endure, she glanced around—enemies everywhere. Gasping for breath, she couldn’t help but admire Brandon’s composure.

He remained calm, his frosty elemental aura spreading dozens of feet outward, forcing cave dwellers to retreat.

Clenching her teeth, Cinnabar refused to give up.

But she didn’t realize Brandon, too, felt his strength waning. In Amber Sword, no matter how powerful you were, without Perfect Body, fatigue was inevitable—even for Gold-Rank or those who awakened elemental affinity.

Brandon’s apparent ease stemmed from an unexpected boon. As his level increased, latent talents grew, revealing new attributes. One stood out:

"As long as stamina hasn’t entered exhaustion, the character can perform at peak condition."

While this didn’t increase Absolute Strength, Brandon knew its practical value surpassed imagination. For players and NPCs alike, unless Perfect Body was achieved, declining stamina was inevitable—absolute combat power naturally decreased over time.

With this talent, everything changed.

An unexpected advantage, it meant he could maintain peak performance indefinitely—a game-changer in prolonged battles or duels.

Still, Brandon mused, once Perfect Body was achieved, this perk would become redundant. That thought brought a hint of frustration.

He swung another wind slash. Repeated use of White Crow Swordsmanship and Strength Surge pushed his stamina dangerously low. But finally, he saw Tagib’s bear goblins move.

Noticing the black-red glow enveloping their massive forms, he recognized the Cave’s Blessing—a common spell among witch doctors. Given their limited mana pool, this meant they were tapping into reserves.

Good enough.

Brandon exhaled. Turning slightly, he asked, “Cinnabar, can you hold on?”

She swatted away an oncoming cave dweller, gasping heavily. Too exhausted to answer, she asked instead, “How… much farther do we go, my lord?”

Her response spoke volumes of her exhaustion.

But then, seeing the wall-like formation of bear goblins approaching, her face paled. Taking a deep breath, she steadied her halberd. “My lord, I remember you have that acceleration skill, right?”

“Charge?” Brandon blinked.

“Yes…”

“What for?”

“I’m spent… I don’t think I can keep advancing…” Cinnabar panted, but defiance burned in her eyes. Clenching her teeth, she added, “I’ll use The Seventh String to open a path. You find a way to speed past those bear goblins… They’re called bear goblins, right?”

Brandon hadn’t expected this plan. Shaking his head, he replied, “What are you talking about? I’m asking if you can buy me some time.”

“Time?”

“Thirty seconds.”

Confusion flickered in her amber eyes, but she nodded firmly. “Of course.”

“It’s in your hands.” Brandon stared at the approaching “wall” of bear goblins. In his view, Tagib’s ram-headed banner grew distant.

But success felt tantalizingly close.

---

When Tagib sensed Brandon and Cinnabar halt, he nearly believed victory was assured. Even two “slave masters” would hesitate before a line of twenty-plus bear goblins empowered by the Cave’s Blessing.

As their pace slowed, he gained ample time to reorganize his terrified kin.

Thus, all the humans’ efforts would be in vain.

Tagib couldn’t help but feel smug. Yet before he could order hidden warriors to return to the frontline and rally the fleeing masses, an unexpected danger registered in his acute senses.

A premonition born from years of warfare.

His heart stirred. Instinctively, he raised his head. Though blind, echoes revealed an unwelcome presence in the air.

He didn’t know what it was—the sound unfamiliar. Soft yet chaotic, stirring the air into vortices. Wings—but larger than any bird. Tagib suddenly recalled legends of surface eagles.

The giant eagles of the elves.

But only Brandon, Cinnabar, and a few bear goblins witnessed what descended from the sky—not eagles, but two radiant figures with twin pairs of glowing wings.

Archangels of Sanctity descended.

Their target: Tagib below.
