Chapter 163: The Pulse of the Moment
“Pfft.”
Watching her younger brother’s grotesquely swollen face—two parts astonishment, three parts bewilderment, and five parts disbelief—the princess bit down hard on her lip, cheeks flushed with suppressed laughter. Despite her best efforts to maintain composure, a faint giggle escaped.
Mind your manners. Maintain decorum.
As if hearing the telepathic scolding of a certain middle-aged noblewoman, the princess discreetly pinched her thigh, using the sharp pain to stifle her mirth. Regaining control, she raised her outstretched hand slightly higher toward Leon, her voice tinged with playful reproach:
“My prince~ How much longer will you keep me waiting?”
“…”
Looking at the princess below—her cheeks rosy (from stifling laughter), her eyes sultry (from resisting giggles), and her décolletage blindingly fair (genuinely so)—Leon hesitated briefly before finally bending down to take her hand.
It wasn’t greed for power or lust for beauty driving him—it was that Gold Badge. And let’s not forget, this princess was the first in line for the throne. As long as their marriage remained intact, upon the king’s passing, his Gold Badge would ascend to Anomalous Color. How could anyone refuse such an opportunity?
Done.
With Leon’s hand firmly in hers—and by extension, House Lion’s legacy and the kingdom’s future—Veronica felt an immense weight lift off her shoulders. A shackle that had weighed her down for years was suddenly gone.
Stepping onto the platform, she interlaced her fingers tightly with Leon’s, standing beside him. Her cheeks flushed anew with excitement.
This was her chance—a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity—to fully absorb House Lion’s inheritance, securing the Department of Public Works and the military under royal control. With these resources, the reforms she’d long dreamed of could finally be realized.
Next, she’d sweep away years of corruption, balance the treasury’s deficits, and rebuild the military nearly hollowed out by House Lion. The kingdom would rise again, stronger than ever.
Never again would the kingdom suffer as it had six years ago, when enemy forces swept through after a single battlefield collapse, displacing millions and leaving the land desolate…

“Thump. Thump.”
Though Leon’s Contamination Value had long surpassed 3 points, his physical conditioning hadn’t yet caught up to grant him superhuman abilities. However, his heightened perception had already sharpened considerably.
As the princess stood beside him, he could hear her breathing quicken and her heartbeat accelerate.
“Thump. Thump.”
Observing her increasingly dazed expression, flushed cheeks, and the faint dampness of her palm, Leon furrowed his brow and leaned in to whisper:
“Your Highness? Are you alright?”
“Call me Veronica—or Vinnie, if you prefer.”
Nearly a decade of longing was finally coming to fruition. Her beloved nation was seeing the dawn of hope. Clutching Leon’s hand tightly, the princess replied with radiant joy:
“I’m fine—better than fine. I’ve never felt this good in my life.”
“Prince… no, Leon. Thank you. Thank you on behalf of the entire kingdom.”
“I don’t yet know why you proposed to me, but I can assure you, your choice will prove correct. I… I think I’m just too excited…”
“Thump. Thump. Thump.”
Though her grip on Leon’s hand remained firm, her body began leaning into him unconsciously. Finally, she wrapped her arm around his, resting her head lightly on his shoulder, her voice soft and breathless:
“Hold me, Leon… Just for a moment. I might… I might be too happy. I’m feeling a little dizzy… My heart’s racing…”
Whether intentional or not, her plump, rosy lips brushed lightly against Leon’s earlobe, transferring their heat directly to his skin. His ears reddened instantly, and the gentle warmth of her breath sent shivers down his spine. His own heartbeat quickened, pounding like a drum against his chest.
“Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.”
At some point, the entire hall had fallen silent. Guests who had been whispering and Prince Joshua, seething with resentment, all seemed to instinctively press their hands to their chests.
What’s happening to me?
Feeling her cheeks grow hot and flushed, the prime minister’s wife, standing near the front row alongside Joshua, touched her oddly flushed face in confusion. She turned to her attendant, hoping for assistance to leave the stifling hall for some fresh air.
But before she could speak, her attendant stumbled forward, collapsing in front of the stage. He struggled several times but couldn’t rise.
And his fall seemed to trigger something strange. Across the hall, one by one, guests began collapsing like dominoes.
Like a roomful of drunken revelers, their faces flushed unnaturally as they staggered and fell in every direction…
---
“Poison… Someone poisoned us!”
Finally, someone realized something was amiss. Prince Joshua, sprawled on the floor, flipped over and glared at Leon like a cornered wolf, shouting hoarsely:
“It’s you! You poisoned us, didn’t you?”
Idiot. It has nothing to do with poison. This is clearly an attack from an anomaly.
Ignoring Joshua’s baseless accusation, Leon listened to the thunderous heartbeats echoing through the hall. Feeling his own blood race faster, he helped the increasingly dazed princess to the side and pulled out a small mirror from his pocket, holding it up to check his reflection.
“Woof~”
With a familiar bark, the husky pup appeared, carrying the shopping bag with the black goat’s head and the broom marked with cat paw prints.
‘I’ve gotta say, your luck really is terrible.’
Peering through the holes in the shopping bag at the chaotic scene, the black goat sighed:
‘Just like that Conan devil you mentioned—you’re a magnet for trouble. Wherever you go, chaos follows. Nothing ever goes smoothly for you.’
‘Enough chatter. Let’s get to work.’
Rubbing the goat’s horn, Leon quickly scanned the souls of everyone in the hall. To his surprise, they all appeared “normal.” Frowning deeply, he communicated privately via mental link:
‘I suspect this is an assassination attempt by the rebels targeting the princess. But I haven’t located whoever used the anomaly. Their “range” might exceed my vision.
‘Also, it’s possible they’ve found a way to evade soul detection based on intel about me. Keep an eye out for me.’
