Chapter 178: The Final Battle of Krotan (Part 5)

Somewhere in Krotan, within the command center of the Northern Expeditionary Forces, Aldrich stared at the central screen displaying Viking fighters dominating the skies. His face darkened with every passing second.

"Thud." A muffled crash echoed as his wine glass toppled over, spilling most of its amber liquid onto the floor.

"Damn it! Who are they? WHO ARE THEY?" The governor's hysterical roar reverberated throughout the command hall.

The operational staff cowered in the corners, too terrified to utter a word. Communication officers, intelligence personnel, internal affairs officials, and department heads all kept their heads down, busying themselves with their tasks, not daring to breathe too loudly.

"Are you all mute? A bunch of useless fools!" Bloodshot eyes scanned the room, brimming with murderous intent. Aldrich wanted nothing more than to slaughter every last one of these irritating pests before him.

That mysterious force—the one that had wreaked havoc at the Apalus military-industrial base, toying with the city defense forces like a dog on a leash—had reappeared, this time without warning, right in the Arctic.

Simultaneously, two devastating blows landed on Aldrich’s head. The airbase in the Antarctic had fallen and been destroyed, with Saxton Leonard dead. The former was Krotan’s largest airbase, supplying a third of the aerial forces attacking the Arctic. The latter, though only the brother of Cain Rudolf’s concubine, was still a member of the nobility. Leonard’s death in Krotan, with the government clueless about the culprit, left little doubt about how Cain would react.

Aldrich had long harbored a seething rage, but he had suppressed it until now. When the battle reports from the commanders of the First and Third Fleets of the Southern Sea and Howard arrived, his anger finally erupted uncontrollably.

"Nukes… They actually used nukes. Marion, you’ve sealed your own fate." After a long while, Aldrich managed to forcibly tamp down the fury boiling within him.

Nearby, Bartlett seemed to sense something, his face twisting with hesitation. Finally, he couldn’t help himself. "Governor, according to the analysis data, the enemy used only tactical nuclear weapons with minimal yield…"

Aldrich’s face twisted into a grotesque sneer. "Bartlett, shut up! I don’t need you telling me what to do."

"Sss…" Bartlett sucked in a sharp breath and swallowed the rest of his words. The governor was on the verge of losing control completely. Unless Cain Rudolf himself intervened, no one could dissuade him now.

"Orders!" Aldrich barked, his voice cutting through the tension like a blade.

"Order the armored units of the Second Legion of the Northern Expeditionary Forces to attack from the west!"

"Order the armored units of the Third Legion to attack from the north!"

"Order the armored units of the Fourth Legion to attack from the east!"

"Order the marine divisions of the First and Third Fleets of the Southern Sea to support Howard’s vanguard battalion with a frontal assault!"

"Order the fighter jets, assault aircraft, electronic warfare planes, and unmanned combat drones from the Luntstein, Cadran, and Soyadon carriers to be deployed en masse to the battlefield!"

"Activate Operation 'Hive' 1, 2, 4, and 5 under Special Operations Command. Coordinate them with the carrier-based air combat clusters for a full-scale offensive!"

"Target the missile base’s central area with medium- and long-range ground-attack missiles stationed along the Hight Mountains, Diromos Mountains, and Karst Naval Port. Fire! Fire! Fire!"

"Order all nuclear submarines, missile destroyers, and cruisers around the Northern Sea to activate their intermediate-range missile arrays. Coordinate with the aerial combat forces to launch a comprehensive assault on all peripheral defensive fortifications of the base."

After issuing eight commands in rapid succession, Aldrich took a deep breath, his gaze sweeping over everyone present before settling on the endless darkness outside the bridge’s viewport.

"Order…" He paused, then spoke slowly, enunciating each word with deliberate precision. "Skíðblaðnir Carrier No. 1 and 2 are to surface, ascend, and proceed to the frontlines."

As soon as Aldrich’s voice faded, chaos erupted across the bridge. Every team at their respective consoles sprang into action. Navigation, helm control, power management, transformation coordination, pressure control, and data monitoring teams—all their voices overlapped in a cacophony.

"Empty ballast tanks… Inject high-pressure gas…"

"Adjust course to W603, raise bow angle to 38 degrees, set main engine output to 60%..."

"Prepare for flight mode. Shift power rings forward, preheat main engines, increment auxiliary engine positions by 35, 65, 88…”

"Course normal. Power systems normal. Energy supply normal. All subsystems normal. Parameters normal…”

"Countdown to ascent: 20, 19, 18... 7, 6... 2, 1.”

"Open power ring seal chambers. Activate anti-gravity engine array. Inject EZero energy. Ignite thrusters…”

As the navigator’s voice trailed off, light flared beyond the viewport. Waves surged violently, water cascaded like waterfalls, and torrents poured down the windows.

From the icy waters of the Northern Sea, Skíðblaðnir Carrier No. 1 emerged like a ravenous leviathan, massive streams of water sliding off its sleek hull. Towering waves roiled around it, creating a storm zone spanning several kilometers, with turbulent surges radiating outward.

This colossus, nearly 800 meters long, had a diamond-shaped body lying horizontally, its surface pitch-black and devoid of any blemish. At its rear, a lotus-like ring structure shifted toward the central body as the ship surfaced. Beneath the ring, sealed thrusters opened, emitting streaks of azure-blue light. The intense flames vaporized the seawater within a dozen meters.

With all 32 thrusters firing simultaneously, colossal waves churned across the sea, churning up a tempest across dozens of kilometers.

"Boom…" The deafening roar of the carrier’s thrusters sounded like tearing fabric ripping through the air.

Amidst the billowing mist, Skíðblaðnir No. 1 defied gravity, rising slowly into the sky.

At the same moment, Grant and the others, who had just repelled the government vanguard and thought they could catch a brief respite, were preparing to escort three individuals to the base for a short meeting. Suddenly, Tang Fang stopped mid-step, glanced toward the horizon, and furrowed his brow deeply.

An urgent message came from the Medivac and Viking squadrons on early warning duty. Just 200 kilometers from the base, massive enemy armored groups were converging from all directions, totaling over 200,000 troops.

Armored forces approached from the east, south, west, and north. To the south, over a thousand kilometers away, countless heat signatures swarmed like locusts, blanketing the skies as they surged toward the missile base.

The final assault had begun. The government forces, driven to desperation, had launched an all-out attack.

"It’s here. Aldrich’s killing blow," Tang Fang muttered.

"What?" Grant turned back. "You mean… Aldrich has launched the final assault?"

Tang Fang nodded, his gaze fixed southeast. From the south came not only armed aircraft but also swarms of ship-launched short- and medium-range ground-attack missiles. Beyond the distant northern horizon, countless long-range cruise missiles streaked through the air.

"How many?" Grant asked grimly.

To the east, west, and north were standardized armored legions, totaling approximately 160,000 troops and nearly 4,000 armored vehicles. From the south came a mixed force of the retreating vanguard battalion and marine corps, with 28,000 elite infantry, 800 vehicles, and around 1,200 armed aircraft. Additionally, 600 vehicle-mounted medium-range missiles, 800 ship-launched ground-attack missiles, and 100 heavy cruise missiles accompanied the assault. Behind each of the four advancing armored groups loomed a "Hive" drone carrier.

With every detail Tang Fang recounted, the soldier sitting amidst the ruins of the bunker shivered. Even Howard’s earlier vanguard battalion had posed a significant threat to the base’s defenses. Now, the government forces had committed ten times the previous force in a coordinated land, sea, and air assault. How could they possibly hold out?

Grant and Walton exchanged horrified glances. Grant activated his communicator and shouted, "Command Center, the enemy has launched a full-scale assault with a total force of 200,000. Prepare immediately."

Unbeknownst to him, the base’s large quantum radar array had already detected the enemy movements. Marion stood solemnly before the radar imaging display, taking a deep breath before addressing everyone present.

"Orders: Activate all automated defense systems. Launch all anti-aircraft and attack missile silos. Supply maximum energy to primary and secondary cannons. Hold the line at all costs."

"Everyone, summon your courage. The path of revolution has never been easy. If today we must die, let us pave a path of corpses and blood so future generations can walk upon our backs."

"For posterity!"

"For posterity!"

"For posterity!"

"..."

Equipment operators, commanding officers, and even rebel soldiers dozing in the trenches repeated the chant, their voices echoing through the communication channels.

"So, what’s the plan?" Arroz turned to Tang Fang, spitting out the stub of his cigar. Ash scattered among the rubble, dispersing into the wind.

Tang Fang said nothing, his brows tightening as twin blades of cold resolve gleamed in his eyes.

For the first time, Grant sensed an overwhelming, pure, unadulterated killing intent emanating from him.
