Chapter 99: Unmatched and Unrepeatable

While Gu Lu was at home studying games, the faculty members of No. 8 High School were gathered in the office, brainstorming ways to promote the school.

"Are you sure this will work?" Principal Liu asked Wu Du, the school’s literary advisor. "Do you have confidence in it?"

"I don’t have the script with me right now," Wu Du replied, "but Principal Liu, let me put it this way—once you read the stories Gu Lu has written, you’ll understand why I’m so confident."

Seeing the principal still lost in thought, he added, "Principal Liu, your foresight is unparalleled. Bringing Gu Lu into our school from competitors like Third Middle School and Bashu High School was a masterstroke. If he continues to develop in this field, he’ll undoubtedly become a nationally renowned writer."

That was more like it. To be honest, Principal Liu hadn’t paid much attention to Gu Lu initially. However, his guiding philosophy had always been simple: if other schools wanted someone, he’d do everything in his power to snatch them away.

The conditions offered to Gu Lu were nothing short of extraordinary: flexible attendance policies, free meals, a 400-yuan-per-semester housing subsidy, a 3,000-yuan talent award, and full tuition waiver. Such terms were unmatched across No. 8 High School, second only to Zhou Lin’s hefty scholarship package.

"I’ve already submitted a recommendation for Gu Lu to join the Chongqing Writers' Association," Wu Du added. "The chances of success are high."

If it worked, Gu Lu would make history as the youngest member of the association at just sixteen. That would significantly boost the school’s reputation.

"For the school anniversary celebration, I’ll invite Chongqing TV Station. The rest, Mr. Wu, is up to you," Principal Liu said, convinced.

Originally, the plan had been similar to last year’s—inviting reporters from the Chongqing Daily. As the principal of a prestigious high school, Liu was highly accomplished, but media and education were two separate realms. Even he had to rely on personal connections to pull it off.

"Principal Liu, rest assured—the performance by The Tree People Literary Club during this year’s anniversary celebration will be unprecedented." Wu Du paused, swallowing back the phrase "unmatched and unrepeatable" for fear it might bring bad luck.

After their discussion, the two exchanged knowing smiles. Principal Liu sought fame, and so did Wu Du.

Wu Du envisioned himself as a mentor figure, ushering Gu Lu into the literary world. If Gu Lu achieved fame in the future, this act alone would become legendary, elevating Wu Du’s status alongside it.

Meanwhile, Gu Lu finished cleaning up after lunch and began typing at home.

He completed Listening to Listening to Moon Songs in a White Room and Iron Pillar, then sent them to Xiao Xue, the corresponding editor at Fear Guest. With that done, he closed his laptop and headed out.

"Did I enjoy inviting classmates over when I was younger? Probably not," Gu Lu mused while waiting for the bus.

At least in his adult life, he rarely invited friends to his place. Whenever there was a need to gather, they always met outside.

Since Thursday’s autograph incident, Li Guyuan had been exceptionally warm toward Gu Lu, even surpassing Lü Ping (nicknamed Flat Top). On Friday afternoon, before dismissal, Li Guyuan had extended an invitation to Gu Lu to visit his home.

Unable to decline such enthusiasm, Gu Lu reluctantly agreed.

Thirty minutes later, Gu Lu disembarked and arrived at the address Li Guyuan had provided. He pulled out his phone and called, "Tangyuan (nickname), I’m here—at the entrance of Bai Le Grocery Store."

Before he could hang up, Li Guyuan emerged from the store, waving enthusiastically. His voice overlapped with the one coming from the phone. "Gu Lu! Over here!"

Still shouting, Li Guyuan ran toward him, a wide grin plastered across his face.

"My mom’s cooking dinner tonight. Let’s wait here for a bit," Li Guyuan said, leading Gu Lu inside the store naturally.

This grocery store belonged to Li Guyuan’s family? It was spacious, stocked with snacks, daily necessities like rice and oil, brooms, basins, and more—a true testament to its name, "miscellaneous."

Li Guyuan tidied up the shop while keeping an eye on the bulky computer at the cashier’s counter. One screen displayed security footage of the store, while the other played the TV drama Chronicles of Dakang.

"If you want snacks, help yourself. Want a drink?" Li Guyuan offered warmly.

"No thanks. I ate quite a bit at lunch—I’m stuffed," Gu Lu replied.

"At least take some water, then," Li Guyuan insisted, handing him a bottle of cola. Fearing rejection, he twisted the cap open before Gu Lu could protest. Just as he finished, a customer approached the counter, and Li Guyuan smoothly transitioned into cashier mode.

Gu Lu suddenly understood something. "Tangyuan, you didn’t invite me over just to keep you company in the shop, did you?"

There were no parents around—they were likely busy elsewhere.

"Cough, cough—it’s not like that," Li Guyuan stammered, slightly embarrassed. He quickly changed the subject. "Have you seen this TV series? It’s amazing."

Onscreen, Emperor Dakang was speaking to his beloved concubine. "Look, my love—this is the empire I’ve built for you."

"This is the territory I’ve secured for you. When I inherit the throne, half of it will be yours someday," Li Guyuan joked, mimicking the scene.

"I haven’t watched it—" Gu Lu started to reply.

"Ding—"

A familiar trigger sound echoed in Gu Lu’s mind. He exhaled in relief. So high school classmates could activate the list too!

Ever since graduating middle school, a weight had been pressing on his chest. Since starting high school, none of his classmates had successfully triggered the synthesis list, leaving Gu Lu questioning his own sanity.

Even Minato Shukawa’s short stories and Liu Cixin’s unfinished works had been triggered by Ms. Gao.

"Wait—if you think about it, Ms. Gao must also be an experience point provider," Gu Lu realized suddenly.

"Whenever I come back from vacation, I have to help out in the shop—it’s so boring," Li Guyuan explained, mistaking Gu Lu’s silence for displeasure. "Seriously, feel free to grab snacks. Your tab is on me."

Ever since Gu Lu acknowledged his work, Li Guyuan had unilaterally considered him a close friend and confidant.

"It’s fine. I’m just hanging around at home anyway, so keeping you company in the shop isn’t a problem."

For the next hour, Gu Lu chatted intermittently with Li Guyuan. He discovered that the latter had read extensively, possessing a strong literary foundation for someone his age.

Meanwhile, Gu Lu mulled over the three tags that had just triggered—

"My dialogue synthesis list is still occupied, so this time, it must have been triggered by an item instead. What did I gain?" Gu Lu wondered.

A bottle of cola? Triggered by cola? That didn’t seem right—after all, Gu Lu had purchased countless bottles before, and if that were the case, it should’ve triggered long ago.

"This is confusing. There are two possibilities. First, it really is the cola, but I lacked some prerequisite condition earlier, rendering it ineffective."

"The second possibility is that I gained something else entirely."

For now, it was impossible to tell. After all, Gu Lu still hadn’t fully deciphered the mechanics of his cheat system.

Based on these three tags, what work could it be?

Regardless, they were all classics from his past life—and excellent works at that. Gu Lu hoped to replicate the success of The Selected Works of Minato Shukawa.

But these three tags… They offered no clear hints whatsoever.

"What do you like to eat? I’ll ask my dad to cook something special for you—he’s a chef," Li Guyuan said.

"I’m not picky, but my stomach can’t handle spicy food," Gu Lu replied.

"Stomach issues?" Li Guyuan made a mental note to inform his parents later.

And so began the two teenagers’ shift guarding the shop.

Students could take vacations, but some editors couldn’t. Take Xiao Xue from Fear Guest, for instance.
