Chapter 151: The Investigation Mystery (Part 4)

Why is my psychological evaluation just a string of question marks?

Deciphering the text reflected in his pupils via Husky’s mirror ability, Leon frowned slightly upon spotting the seven consecutive question marks in the "Psychological State" section of the report.

After receiving the red-haired chief's subtle warning, Leon had been extra cautious. He seated the two investigators on the right side of the sofa, near the storage cabinet, and discreetly sent Husky—equipped with a small mirror—into the glass door of the open cabinet.

From where Leon sat, there was no way to see the contents of the report directly. But thanks to [Mirror Dog], every word written by the investigators was reflected into his eyes without fail. The moment those question marks appeared, he caught them.

However… while the psychological evaluation seemed odd, the overall assessment of him appeared surprisingly positive?

Cooperating with the elderly investigator, Leon answered several non-confrontational questions. Seeing over a dozen glowing evaluations like "exceptional" and "outstanding," even with the chief's earlier warning to "be careful of this person," Leon’s impression of the older man continued to improve.

Despite being unceremoniously chased out of the chief’s office earlier and enduring some friction here, the elderly investigator remained impartial throughout the questioning. He even subtly shielded Leon on minor points, displaying a grace that was hard not to admire.

Compared to the female investigator—who had marked up her report with countless red X’s, loved to fabricate issues out of thin air, dragged the entire Virgo Bureau into unrelated topics, and hinted at reporting colleagues for misconduct—the older man was leagues better.

...

"Mr. Leon, we’ve finished our questions. Thank you for your cooperation."

Shaking hands warmly with Leon, the elderly investigator didn’t disclose any results. Instead, he left the office with the silent female investigator in tow.

Shortly after they were well outside the Virgo Bureau’s premises, the older man glanced at the unusually quiet Elsa and smiled faintly.

"Elsa, what do you think of this person?"

"..."

Elsa hesitated for a moment before sighing deeply.

"To be honest... he seems to be an exceptionally good person. Not only is he kind-hearted, but he’s also meticulous, diligent, earnest, and far from rigid or dull. His mind appears sharp as well.

Mr. Camus, in my opinion, someone like him is the ideal template for an agent. It’s a shame he’s stuck in a place like the Virgo Bureau."

"Oh? No wonder your evaluations of him were so low. So you’re using those poor ratings to help him transfer to a better branch?"

"Mm."

Elsa nodded, admiration flickering in her eyes.

"Mr. Camus, according to our division of labor, I was responsible for evaluating him, while you handled the Lion Blood Night incident. Though we exchanged notes beforehand, some things simply can’t be conveyed through documents.”

“Before joining the Virgo Bureau, he nearly faced ruin multiple times due to financial struggles. Logically, he should have developed a strong desire for wealth, yet he hasn’t become its slave—not even the Sacred Spirit of the Scale of Gold could sway him.”

“His ambition for power is equally weak; he resists becoming a duke and attempted to flee shortly after recovering from his injuries. These traits can’t be faked. He truly isn’t a greedy person. The only thing he values deeply seems to be human connections.”

“He cares deeply for his family, tending to his younger siblings after their parents’ deaths. He remembers every kindness shown to him and gets along remarkably well with even the Virgo Bureau’s notorious members. That’s incredibly rare."

Hearing this, the older investigator chuckled softly, finding something amusing in her words.

His naturally upturned lips, paired with crescent-shaped eyes and deep laugh lines around his mouth and eyes, gave him an approachable demeanor. But...

"Elsa, you’ve completely misread him."

The older man shook his head slightly and handed over his own investigation report.

Taking it, Elsa gasped in shock. It was riddled with glaring red X’s and filled with alarming comments like "dangerous," "must monitor closely," and "recommend thorough investigation." It bore no resemblance to the report Leon had seen earlier.

"He appears far too normal. And within the Cleansing Bureau, the more ‘normal’ someone seems, the more terrifying they often are."

Seeing Elsa’s bewildered expression, the older man explained:

"Our agents are constantly exposed to anomalies and witness the most extreme evils of human nature during missions. They engage in brutal life-and-death struggles against countless entities that covet this world.”

“Elsa, remember this: the greatest influence on a person’s character and behavior comes from their experiences. People doing this kind of work inevitably drift further from normalcy. How could someone remain so stable, so seemingly ordinary?"

"But..."

Elsa froze, then hesitantly questioned:

"Could it be because he’s only recently joined the Cleansing Bureau? Maybe he hasn’t had enough time to... change?"

"It’s not about time or the extent of change—it’s something more ‘solid.’ Despite wielding powers far beyond ordinary humans, his self-perception hasn’t shifted at all.”

“He still firmly believes he’s part of the ‘ordinary’ population, treating the Cleansing Bureau’s work as if it were akin to a government job. This eerie stability is profoundly unsettling. Just thinking about it sends shivers down my spine."

Pausing briefly, the older man shook his head again.

"Moreover, he’s not as ‘normal’ as he appears. Did you know he’s been secretly reading our investigation reports?"

"Huh?"

"Just like the Sewer Emperor, he has a pet from the mirror world. It stayed perched on the nearby glass the entire time, projecting every word you wrote into his eyes."

"..."

As Elsa stared blankly, dumbfounded, the older man sighed and elaborated on his findings.

"Not only that, but the Lion Blood Night is tied to him as well. I strongly suspect those people weren’t killed by Bobby Lion but by him. When I traced the scene, Bobby Lion seemed genuinely shocked by what happened, his eyes brimming with despair.”

“This person is extremely meticulous, leaving no trace behind. All interactions with Bobby Lion and the goat demon occurred within the mental realm, making them impossible to eavesdrop on through scene reconstruction.”

“Even the Heart of Ambition confiscated by the bureau seems to have been tampered with somehow—he’s convinced it to insist Bobby Lion was the one who acted.”

“Oh, and I visited the Secret Investigation Bureau to trace events surrounding the Lion Blood Night. I observed his interrogations of that female rebel twice. This man... how should I put it? He seems to possess an innate, unsettling talent for manipulating human emotions..."

After mulling it over, the older man concluded gravely:

"In summary... he’s likely a madman."
