Chapter 150: The Investigation Mystery (Part 3)

An aura darker than any demon…

Leon frowned slightly at the comment, glanced at the [I Am the Demon] entry in his badge panel, and responded calmly:

"The demonic aura you sense is because I have an exceptionally high compatibility with demon-type anomalies, and I’ve been using a demonic artifact called the [War Horns].”

“Also, please try to keep your questions within the scope of relevance. I don’t see how this has anything to do with the Lion Blood Night."

"It might not be unrelated." The female investigator snorted after sizing up Leon, whose demonic aura practically radiated off him.

"Demons are embodiments of desire. People with such high compatibility with demonic artifacts almost always exhibit traits of extreme greed. Yet here you are, refusing wealth and power. This makes me suspect you’re lying, and hastily donating your assets is just an attempt to evade scrutiny."

Staring at the clearly antagonistic investigator, Leon’s eyes narrowed, his tone turning icy as he shot back:

"If donating everything is seen as evading investigation, then what if I had kept the dukedom and the Lion family’s fortune? Would you accuse me of orchestrating the Lion Blood Night for personal gain? Is this how your investigations work?"

"I never said that."

Though she harbored a clear bias against the Virgo Cleansing Bureau and was deliberately making things difficult, the female investigator wasn’t entirely foolish. She wouldn’t give Leon an easy opening to exploit, so she countered coolly:

"You have a strong affinity for demonic artifacts but act indifferent to wealth and power. I’m merely questioning whether you’re hiding something—that’s a reasonable line of inquiry."

"And what kind of bullsht logic is that?"

Just as Leon was considering whether to set a trap for her, the [Black Goat], which had been quietly observing from inside its shopping bag, wriggled free and spat a thick wad of phlegm straight at the startled investigator.

Watching her scramble to dodge, the goat cackled gleefully before glaring at her with its wide, unblinking eyes.

"Lady, why didn’t you bring your mom along when you left the house? Afraid she’d get too busy finding you a new sugar daddy?"

"You…!"

"What ‘you’? In your own words, this is a ‘reasonable doubt.’ Of course, if you had brought your mom, it’d mean you were personally picking out the next one. Heh, isn’t that just reasonable doubt? Don’t act like you’re the only one who knows how to play this game."

After thoroughly humiliating the now-purple-faced investigator, the goat raised an eyebrow at Leon, silently conveying, Don’t worry about the verbal brawl—I’ve got this. Taking a deep breath, it prepared to launch another tirade:

"Why don’t you take a piss and look at yourself—with that ugly mug, how dare you show your face around here… Huh?"

The goat froze mid-sentence, its mouth suddenly sealed shut as if it had never existed. Wide-eyed with shock, it emitted muffled grunts while flailing helplessly.

Meanwhile, the elderly investigator, who had been quietly jotting notes, lowered his crossed fingers and offered Leon an apologetic glance.

"I apologize for Elsa’s behavior. Her prejudice against your bureau has clearly influenced her approach. From now on, I’ll handle the questioning. However, I must ask you to rein in that anomaly of yours.”

“The rules are strict about these matters—even routine post-incident inquiries require discretion. Aside from Chief Olivia, no one else is supposed to interfere or eavesdrop."

"Fair enough. If you’re willing to be reasonable, then so am I."

Leon activated his Sacred Spirit Pendant, lifting the goat by its scruff and placing it directly in front of the fuming investigator. As their eyes locked—one pair human, the other ovine—he voiced his concerns:

"However, you must understand that Ms. Elsa seems to harbor significant bias against our bureau, which has clearly clouded her judgment and conduct.”

“In my view, she shouldn’t have been part of this investigation in the first place. Sending investigators with such conflicts of interest doesn’t just disadvantage us—it compromises the integrity of the results."

"..."

The elderly investigator paused, visibly pondering how to respond. Before he could speak, Elsa interjected with a cold laugh:

"Do you think I wanted to come here?”

“To ensure impartiality, investigations require two-person teams. Out of the nineteen investigators stationed in the Northern Three Kingdoms, sixteen have grievances with your bureau, and two outright hate you.”

“Heh, next time, feel free to pick someone else. Just don’t choose me, and I’ll happily arrange it."

"..."

Holy sht... So out of nineteen investigators, eighteen have beef with us?

Using the goat’s soul vision to verify, Leon discovered—to his utter disbelief—that she was telling the truth. Stunned by the sheer magnitude of the interpersonal disaster, he let out a low whistle and tried to defend his colleagues:

"Well… though I haven’t been with the Virgo Bureau long, I’ve met a few of the seniors, and they’ve all been great. Isn’t there some misunderstanding here?"

"..."

Detecting no trace of deceit in Leon’s statement, the female investigator—who moments ago had been dripping with sarcasm—visibly stiffened, her expression morphing into one of incredulous disbelief.

"You… You actually think they’re decent people?"

"Uh… Is there something wrong with that?"

Leon furrowed his brow, clearly confused.

"Chief may drink heavily, but when sober, she’s sharp and caring. She’s even treated me to drinks occasionally. Emma is gentle and attentive; thanks to her advice, I survived several crises. And Jerry? Sure, he has some quirks with stealing, but he’s generous and helpful. After I did him a small favor, he gifted me anomalies and weapons, teaching me how to use them. They’re all good people."

"..."

The Blood-Haired Maiden inviting you for drinks, the notoriously brutal Corpse Executioner being gentle and patient, and the Sewer Emperor not stealing from you but instead giving you gifts?

What the actual fk... Are you living in a dream world, or am I still asleep?

As Leon painted a picture of the Virgo Bureau as a harmonious paradise where everyone was kind and supportive, the investigator’s earlier hostility inexplicably melted away. Slumping back onto the couch, she muttered under her breath:

"You’re something else… Damn it, just pretend I never said anything."

"???"

Watching the woman cover her face with the file folder and lie motionless on the sofa, Leon turned to the elderly investigator in bewilderment.

"Did I say something wrong?"

"No, no. Everything you said is fine."

The older man was at a loss for words. Observing Leon—a man who thrived in the Virgo Bureau and somehow saw goodness in everyone—he simply mumbled vaguely and scribbled seven question marks in the psychological evaluation section of the report.

???????

There’s definitely something wrong with this guy’s head.
