Chapter 168: Mistaken for Prey
On the eastern slope of Weiwei Mountain, there was a perpetually snow-covered ridge known as Cuiwei Ridge.
At this moment, on the southern side of Cuiwei Ridge, a group of people braved the snowstorm, climbing toward the summit. Unlike typical mountaineers, each member of this team carried not only standard climbing gear like ropes and ice axes but also what appeared to be pistols strapped to their legs. One individual even lugged an enormous cage, roughly a meter square, on their back.
Amid the snowstorm to the south of the group, a figure clad in black tactical gear and draped with white camouflage lay slumped in the snow. A pool of crimson blood spread beneath the figure, slowly being obscured by the swirling wind and falling snowflakes.
Meanwhile, about thirty kilometers away at Jinquan Lake, a herd of wild yaks ambled along the shore, drinking leisurely from the water’s edge. Nearby, a pickup truck sat parked. Inside, a man wrapped his head with a scarf as he clutched a satellite phone in the driver's seat, occasionally glancing toward the grazing animals.
Elsewhere, Wang Ping emerged from the swirling sandstorm, feeling utterly disoriented. The cracked earth beneath him radiated heat, scorching the soles of his paws with every step. Each movement felt like slow-roasting his sensitive pads.
Gazing at the distant figure crouched behind a hillock nearly a kilometer away, Wang Ping sighed deeply, silently grumbling.
"You all run so fast—do you think having long legs makes you special?"
To the northeast, a drone ascended to a height of a thousand meters, circling above the Gobi Desert. Iru's voice crackled through everyone’s earpieces.
"Anna, Sama is en route with a first-aid kit to support you. She’ll approach from the west; make sure to cover her. Captain, the poachers are about a kilometer northwest of your position. There’s no cover between you, so proceed with caution! Hey, Hee, I suggest you retreat to the hideout. Our precious eagle has ventured out hunting—you don’t want it mistaking you for a rabbit!"
"How many times do I have to say this? Call me Park or Deputy Captain!" Park Yoo-hee protested over the radio.
"Iru, any movement from those two near the trap?" Ignoring Park’s frustration, Luke asked calmly.
"Oh, not a peep," Iru replied after a brief pause, then added jokingly, "Maybe they’ve already died of thirst… Oh no, wait!"
Everyone heard Iru’s alarmed shout through the comms. Anna, hidden behind the hillock, furrowed her brow and removed her earpiece.
"What happened?"
From behind a weathered rock, Luke frowned and asked the same question.
After a long silence, Iru responded, exasperated, "Our precious eagle just wrecked the drone… No more aerial support for now. You’re on your own—stay safe…"
"…" A collective groan echoed through the team as dark lines of frustration formed on their foreheads.
They had encountered relatively little resistance so far, making their missions easier. This was the first time the drone someone had painstakingly lugged onto the plateau had been deployed—and it lasted less than fifteen minutes before being destroyed.
"Shit!" Back in the camp tent, a visibly irritated young man tossed the remote control aside.
Wang Ping trudged along, shaking the sand off his paws, planning to circle around wide to the north and sneak up behind the poachers to assist Anna. As he rested briefly on a patch of sparse grass, a growing shadow suddenly loomed over him.
Before Wang Ping could react, a drone nearly sixty centimeters wide crashed down in front of him with a resounding thud, sending dust and debris flying into his face.
"Crap… cough, cough…"
Wang Ping stumbled out of the cloud of dust, his heart racing with shock and bewilderment.
Who could have imagined that walking peacefully would result in something so large falling from the sky? If it had been slightly off target, Wang Ping would’ve been flattened.
"Damn it! Who the hell was piloting this thing?"
He pulled a circuit board tangled with copper wires off his face and examined the shattered remains of the drone at his feet. Something about it seemed familiar. Just as he hesitated, a chilling sensation washed over him—he was being watched.
"Am I exposed?"
Wang Ping glanced back toward the poachers’ direction while skirting around the wreckage, searching for cover.
Suddenly, an even larger shadow descended from above. Accompanied by a piercing cry, a massive golden eagle swooped down, its talons—larger than Wang Ping’s head—aiming straight for him.
"Holy crap!"
Reacting instinctively, Wang Ping dodged sideways, swiping his paw at the bird as it lunged. The clash was fierce. The eagle’s talons left a bloody gash on Wang Ping’s arm, while he managed to scratch its leg in return.
Never in his wildest dreams did Wang Ping imagine he’d be mistaken for prey by a golden eagle. He was supposed to be protecting it! Now, staring up at the majestic bird with a wingspan nearing two meters, he felt a mix of astonishment, helplessness, and irritation.
"Are you kidding me? Ungrateful brute! I’m trying to help you!"
His belly growled indignantly, as if egging him on to fight.
The commotion drew everyone’s attention. After all, their mission revolved entirely around the golden eagle. Though uncertain whether this particular bird was the legendary King Eagle, its size suggested it wasn’t far off.
However, Wang Ping stood opposite the eagle, partially obscured by the wreckage and dust. From afar, others only saw the eagle swoop down without realizing what had attracted it.
Especially the two men guarding the trap—they watched the eagle flapping its wings in the distance, seemingly preoccupied with something unseen. Turning back to their wilted rabbit bait, they sighed wistfully. Why didn’t the stupid bird go after the rabbit instead?
"Hmm, maybe it’s dead? Look how sluggish it is—that’s probably why the eagle isn’t interested in it," one muttered.
"Shut up, will you?"
Wang Ping realized he struggled to keep his temper in check when dealing with animals. Whenever logic failed, his urge to fight surged uncontrollably.
And negotiating with a bird? The outcome was painfully predictable.
By now, Wang Ping and the eagle had clashed twice. Whether due to the sun beating down or adrenaline coursing through him, Wang Ping’s heartbeat quickened, his breathing grew labored, and his strikes became harder to restrain.
Just as he deflected another swipe of the eagle’s claws, its head suddenly dipped low, aiming its sharp beak directly at his face.
"To hell with it—I’ll deal with you first, then them!"
Fueled by anger, Wang Ping tilted his head slightly, allowing the beak to latch onto his shoulder. With a swift motion, he grabbed the feathers atop the eagle’s head, swung himself onto its back, and used his other arm to grip its neck tightly, effectively choking it.
"Try grabbing me now, you ungrateful beast!"
Muttering curses under his breath, Wang Ping released the feathers on the eagle’s head and began slapping its face repeatedly with his paw.
The eagle let out a shrill cry, flapping its wings violently. By the time Wang Ping realized what was happening, they were already airborne.
"Whoa…"
As the ground receded below, Wang Ping felt as though a bucket of icy Sprite had been poured over his head—a chilling rush of panic set in.
