Chapter 164: The Charles Federation's Pawn

When Marion returned to his quarters after leaving the conference room, Claire had been waiting outside for some time.

"Hmm? Claire, why are you still up so late?" Marion looked at the golden-haired girl with a wistful expression in her eyes, his gaze softening with affection.

"General, is this really the right thing to do? The Charles Federation..." Claire began hesitantly.

Marion ushered her into the room and walked over to his desk. He picked up a photo frame and gently traced its surface with his rough hands.

The boy in the picture appeared young and shy, his head slightly bowed as if embarrassed.

"Bart... If you were still alive, you'd be about Montgomery's age now," Marion murmured softly. Then, turning his gaze to Claire, he said, "Claire, do you know? Making choices is often harder than making sacrifices."

Claire bit her lip. "General, we're making deals with devils. Will there truly be a future or hope in doing so?"

"Devils..." Marion sighed. "Perhaps. But we have no other choice."

The conflict between the Monya Empire and the Charles Federation in the "Gampna" war zone had escalated drastically. Over a hundred fleets clashed in what could only be described as a fiery furnace of blood and destruction—a meat grinder, a graveyard, but even those terms fell short.

As for the Garcia Resistance and its twelve leaders, they were nothing more than tools used by the Charles Federation to restrain Monya and hinder Colcrav I’s ambitions.

"Using the blood and bodies of our comrades to pave the way for the Charles Federation... Is this really right?" Claire's eyes shimmered with unshed tears as she thought of Sam—the sixteen-year-old boy—and his older brother, who loved to sing country songs.

Marion let out a long sigh, averting his gaze from Claire. Over the past twenty years, countless family members and brothers had sacrificed their lives for the promise of a better tomorrow. They now rested under an endless starry sky.

If Gabrilles had his way, all of Krotan would already be engulfed in revolutionary fervor instead of being confined to the northern and southern banks of the Sunaru River. Only a planet-wide uprising—or one that swept through the entire Asram star system—would draw Monya forces into the fray and disrupt the stalemate in Gampna.

But Marion wouldn’t allow it. Gabriles cared only about the war between Monya and the Charles Federation, while Marion had to consider the lives of his soldiers.

"Claire, in the coming days, there may be some minor disturbances at the base. Be prepared, and take care of Virginia."

"Disturbances?" Claire’s face paled. This missile base was impenetrable; Aldrich wouldn’t dare launch an assault here unless he’d lost his mind. But if not the governor, then who?

"General... You mean..."

"You don’t need to be so tense. I’m just saying it’s possible. The Charles Federation won’t easily destroy my banner—it’s too valuable an asset for them to lose."

"Then..."

Before Claire could say anything further, Marion waved his hand dismissively. "Claire, I’m tired. I want to rest. Don’t worry about anything else—just look after Aunt Virginia."

"Oh..." Though Marion was notorious for his drinking binges and frequent hangovers, everyone knew him as a brilliant tactician whose strategic foresight had guided them through countless crises. To those familiar with him, Marion wasn’t merely a battle-hardened man but a wise leader with a sharp mind.

If he said there was nothing for her to worry about, then surely everything was under control. Claire nodded respectfully, bid him goodnight, and left the room.

"Young man, I can only help you this far. I hope you’ll stay steadfast on the path ahead… Sigh…"

Early the next morning, around five o'clock, a series of urgent knocks startled Tang Fang awake. Quickly dressing, he opened the door to find Shi Huaqing standing anxiously outside.

"Brother Shi, what’s wrong?" Tang Fang asked, his brow furrowing imperceptibly.

"Brother, gear up quickly and come with me."

"Hmm?" Before Tang Fang could respond, Arroz and Housen approached, already clad in powered armor alongside several rebel soldiers. "Brother Shi, has something happened at the base?"

Shi Huaqing shook his head. "Brother, if you trust me and trust General Marion, follow me without asking questions."

"Alright." After a brief moment of contemplation, Tang Fang nodded, returned inside to don his powered armor, and joined Shi Huaqing, Arroz, Housen, and the Marines. Together, they exited the barracks and took the elevator to the surface.

The atmosphere grew increasingly tense. Not a single patrolling soldier was visible; only faintly glowing signal lights and the hissing sound of exhaust vents broke the silence.

Tang Fang wanted to ask what was going on—what Marion was planning—but seeing Shi Huaqing’s grave expression and the deserted corridors, he decided against pressing further. His purpose in coming to the Arctic was simple: leave Krotan and break free from the filtering network centered around Hatto Spaceport. Since Marion had assured him of safe passage, the specifics weren’t his concern.

From their interactions thus far, Marion and Shi Huaqing struck Tang Fang as honorable men worthy of trust. Whatever they were doing must have its reasons.

Besides, after the battles at the Apalus Military-Industrial Base and the southern slopes of the Hight Mountains, his resources had surged to 48,760 and 6,500 respectively. His Terran combat units included:

- 20 Siege Tanks
- 20 Hellions
- 4 Widow Mines
- 29 Marauders
- 28 Firebats
- 19 Reapers
- 20 Medics
- 247 Marines

With so many combat personnel, what was there to fear?

Upon reaching the surface, buffeted by howling polar winds, several troop carriers awaited them at the base entrance. Shi Huaqing ushered Tang Fang and his group aboard, signaled the sentries, and watched as the barriers lifted. Four trucks carrying Tang Fang and over a hundred soldiers headed straight toward a nearby bay.

Three hours later, the convoy arrived at a shoreline dotted with floating icebergs. Shi Huaqing stepped out of the vehicle, approached Tang Fang, and handed him a PDA.

"Not far from here lies a submarine submerged underwater. Follow the coordinates on the PDA to locate it. As for what to do next after boarding, General Marion has left instructions within."

Tang Fang glanced back toward the direction of the base. "Has something gone wrong at the base?"

Sighing, Shi Huaqing replied, "This is an internal matter of the resistance, brother. No need to trouble yourself with it."

Internal matters? Sure enough… Tang Fang nodded thoughtfully. Every family has its problems, and the Garcia Resistance was no exception. Whether it involved Joseph Mario or someone else remained unclear. Whoever had pushed Marion to this point likely hailed from the Charles Federation—an envoy, perhaps. Wherever humans gathered, politics followed, bringing disputes along with it. Living meant navigating such complexities.

Tang Fang sighed deeply. Beyond the bright sun and clear skies lay the cold, dark void of space.

He hoped Marion would weather this storm—for he was a symbol, a banner…

"Brother, with your skills, avoiding the unmanned defense turrets on the water shouldn’t pose much difficulty."

Smiling faintly at Shi Huaqing, Tang Fang waved to Arroz, Housen, and the others before stepping toward the water.

"Brother Shi, please thank General Marion for me. Perhaps we’ll fight side by side again someday. Oh, and tell Claire not to forget to practice her cooking."

Shi Huaqing chuckled ruefully, shaking his head. "I’ll pass along your message. Take care."

"Take care…"

The water churned as Tang Fang and his companions slowly submerged into the icy depths.
