Chapter 161: The Missile Base
The two groups exchanged brief summaries of their recent exploits before setting off along the Hight Mountains, heading north. By late morning the next day, they had returned to Droznyr Military Port.
As for the Siege Tanks that were unsuited for mountain travel, Tang Fang offered a convenient excuse to destroy them—though in reality, he discreetly stowed them away into his system space with Grant and the others none the wiser. After all, Tang Fang was already shrouded in so many mysterious auras that adding another layer hardly raised an eyebrow.
Upon arriving at the military port, Adelaide stood at the entrance with several high-ranking officers, awaiting their return. As the group approached, a Lieutenant Colonel who appeared to be Webbren’s superior flashed them a faint smile. “Good work.”
“Good work my ass,” muttered Churchill—a burly man whose chest was carpeted with black hair—as if Tang Fang and his crew stealing his thunder somehow made him feel personally betrayed. His indignant tone drew stifled laughter from Adelaide, Nehemiah, and the others.
With the main force of the Third Legion having retreated, the crisis in the Northern and Southern Sunaru Alliances had been averted. A heavy weight lifted from everyone’s shoulders; it felt as though they could finally breathe easy again.
Of course, since Tang Fang had deliberately kept quiet about their demolition spree at the Apalus Military-Industrial Base, neither Adelaide nor anyone else knew just how thoroughly these three had accomplished their mission—and then some. They’d practically turned half of the base’s heavy machinery plants upside down. When Howard eventually placed the damage report on Aldrich’s desk, one could only imagine what the governor would think.
“Thank you,” Claire said once Nehemiah, Adelaide, and the rest had finished exchanging pleasantries with Tang Fang. She stepped forward, her face brimming with gratitude. Having grown up under Montgomery’s watchful eye, she considered him more than just a mentor—he was family. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have joined his special ops team right out of school.
Tang Fang nodded and tossed her rifle back to her. “Its power and precision are impressive, but its functionality is rather limited.”
Claire slung the weapon over her shoulder without hesitation. “This is the Charles Federation’s latest sniper rifle. Its overall performance rivals even Monya’s ‘Thor's Wrath Mod.’”
Tang Fang smirked, unimpressed. “If I get the chance, I’ll give you something better.” Given Claire’s skills as a sniper, the C-10 MK.VI used by Ghost Special Forces seemed like it would suit her perfectly.
“Give me?” Claire blinked, momentarily stunned. “You’ve already done so much…”
“Hey, hey—I said if I get the chance. No promises here.”
“Talosal…”
“Yes?”
Claire struggled to suppress her irritation. “I just brewed a fresh pot of coffee. Want to try some?”
“I’m afraid you might poison me.”
“You…”
Their banter drew amused smiles from those around them. Only Housen scowled, muttering under his breath as he trudged along like a widow pining for lost love. “Tang Fang, where’s my nurse girl…?”
---
After spending the afternoon resting at Droznyr, the group enjoyed dinner before Tang Fang insisted on leaving immediately. Despite Adelaide’s attempts to persuade them to stay longer, they boarded a nuclear-powered cruiser and set sail for Karst Military Port on the Thor continent under cover of night.
The journey spanned 3,340 kilometers, and with the cruiser cruising at 67 knots per hour, they arrived at the Thor mainland by dawn on the third day. Mooring the ship at the dock, the group disembarked, made a brief stop at the naval base to meet with the commander of the Second Fleet of the North Sea, and then climbed into an arctic armored vehicle. Without delay, they sped toward the missile base located at the heart of the continent.
As the sun rose, its golden rays pierced through the horizon, casting dazzling silver reflections across the endless snowy plains. The landscape was pristine, untouched—like the soft skin of a newborn babe.
After hours of travel, the armored vehicle finally came to a halt outside a sprawling military installation buried beneath layers of snow. Tang Fang hopped out, opened the visor of his powered armor, and took a deep breath of the crisp, biting polar air.
The wind whipped against Claire’s insulated suit, causing it to flutter noisily. Her golden hair danced lightly around her face, shimmering like mischievous golden sprites. She wore a look of nostalgia as she too inhaled deeply—but suddenly broke into a cough.
Arroz, standing nearby, had activated the exhaust vents on his powered armor, releasing a thick cloud of smoke that hit Claire full in the face. She furrowed her brows and let out a soft humph.
Before long, several figures emerged from the base, led by a Lieutenant Colonel in his mid-thirties.
A faint smile tugged at Tang Fang’s lips. It seemed Marion hadn’t wasted any time finding a fellow countryman to break the ice.
“Which one of you is Talosal?” the Lieutenant Colonel called out loudly while still several paces away, though his gaze remained fixed squarely on Tang Fang.
“That’s me,” Tang Fang replied casually, stepping forward.
“Shi Huaqing.” The officer introduced himself warmly, pulling Tang Fang into a bear hug as soon as he got close enough. “Fellow countryman, we’ve finally met! Montgomery has been singing your praises nonstop. You’ve become quite the legend around here, believe me!”
Legendary? Tang Fang broke into a cold sweat. Had his plain mug somehow become the object of everyone’s admiration?
“Lieutenant Colonel, good to see you…” Nehemiah began, but Shi Huaqing cut him off.
“Old friend, don’t scare our guest!” he laughed, turning back to Tang Fang. “Don’t mind him, he is just a little too excited.”
Grant and Nehemiah chimed in, teasing and reminiscing among themselves.
“How’s the old man holding up, Lieutenant Colonel? Any trouble with arthritis? I heard the coastal weather can be brutal…”
Nehemiah shot him a sharp glare. Clearly, the guy’s habit of never backing down was rearing its head once more.
“Lieutenant Colonel, let’s save the nostalgia for later,” Tang Fang interjected smoothly. “First, take us to see General Marion.”
“Oh, right! Almost forgot about business. Follow me.” As they walked, Shi Huaqing glanced curiously at Tang Fang. “Brother, that’s not your real name, is it?”
“As mercenaries, we live dangerous lives. Keeping a low profile saves our families a lot of trouble.”
“Well said.” Shi Huaqing’s expression softened, tinged with nostalgia. “Family…”
---
Fifteen minutes later, the group descended via elevator to an underground command center situated 200 meters below ground. Led by Shi Huaqing, they passed through a corridor and entered a vast hall spanning hundreds of square meters.
When Tang Fang stepped inside, he was greeted by rows of rebel commanders staring intently at him. For a moment, he felt like a visiting dignitary being scrutinized by foreign leaders—a surreal experience he hadn’t expected.
Doing his best to maintain a composed demeanor, Tang Fang scanned the room. Then he noticed something odd: not a single person present sported a beard.
