Chapter 138: Hero or Professional?
Unaware of the events that transpired after his departure, Leon—ever the conscientious agent—followed the location indicated by his Soul Vision and located his mission target once more.
Hmm… He hadn’t paid much attention earlier during the rescue, but the back of this woman, the daughter of the Char Department Store’s owner, seemed oddly familiar.
Spotting her struggling to climb over the iron fence, repeatedly failing in her attempts, Leon hesitated for a moment before cautiously calling out:
“Miss Amy?”
“Ahh!”
Startled by the voice behind her, Amy lost her footing on the fence and tumbled backward with a shriek.
“Careful!”
Fearing she might injure herself, Leon rushed forward and caught her just in time. After steadying her trembling form and helping the pale-faced, doll-like young woman regain her balance, he reassured her gently:
“Don’t worry, Miss Amy. The Marseille family’s issue has been resolved. You’re safe now.”
“I… Mr. Leon?”
Finally seeing his face clearly, Amy gasped in recognition. Her eyes widened as realization dawned.
“Just now… was that you? Did you save me?”
“Yes, it was me.”
Leon studied her familiar features, equally surprised.
“You’re the daughter of the Char Department Store’s owner?”
“I… I am. Sorry, I never mentioned it before…”
After answering his question somewhat awkwardly, the curious young woman bombarded him with questions:
“Earlier… how did you suddenly disappear like that? And did you plant explosives on the walls? Why do they explode wherever you go? Also—”
“This… Let’s leave it for tomorrow. Your family must be worried sick. I’ll take you home first, and we can talk about it tomorrow.”
Once again deploying the classic “I’ll explain tomorrow” line, Leon tactfully avoided answering her barrage of questions. In return, he refrained from asking any of his own. Pretending to strain against the iron bars, he secretly used the power of his Sacred Spirit Pendant to bend them, creating an opening wide enough for them to pass through. He then guided the doll-faced girl through the gap.
...
Phew… Finally free.
Though they had only crossed one additional fence, for Amy—who had been held captive for days—it felt like a complete escape from the Marseille family’s grasp.
Letting out an unconscious sigh of relief, she patted her chest and stole a glance at the man walking ahead of her. She felt her heartbeat quicken slightly.
First, because of the department store matter, she’d found a man who seemed perfect husband material. Just as she was preparing to move closer to him and get to know him better, she was kidnapped en route. After several harrowing days locked in a dark room, she was finally rescued—and by none other than the very man she’d set her sights on.
Oh my…
Though he hadn’t carried her out in a princely embrace but rather slung her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes, nearly making her vomit, this still counted as a heroic rescue, right?
Surreptitiously tightening her grip on his hand, feeling an inexplicable sense of security in his warmth, Amy blushed faintly and murmured:
“Mr. Leon, thank you for saving me. I’ll make sure to repay you properly.”
“No need for that.”
Leon shook his head honestly as he waited by the roadside for a carriage.
“The reason I came to rescue you is that your father approached our bureau for help. Chief assigned me the task, and your father has already paid in advance for the rescue.”
“Is that so…”
The image of a gallant hero abruptly shifted to that of a diligent professional. Amy’s expression fell as the pink bubbles of romantic fantasy burst one by one. However, when Leon mentioned her father, her concern returned, and she bit her lip anxiously.
“By the way, I’ve been kidnapped for days. My parents must be so worried. Are they doing alright?”
“I haven’t met them, but I think they’re fine.”
After a moment of thought, Leon replied:
“After your father approached us, our chief had someone investigate his situation. They said your father looked a bit worn but was holding up well. Your mother, however, became ill from excessive worry, though it wasn’t serious. I’m sure she’ll recover once you return.”
That’s a relief…
Reassured about her parents’ condition, Amy relaxed slightly. Then, biting her lip again, she tentatively extended an invitation:
“Mr. Leon, you’ve done such a great service for my family. So… if it’s convenient for you, could you visit us in a couple of days? I’d like to thank you properly.”
In two days? That would coincide with House Lion’s investiture ceremony. Plus, the investigators from headquarters were expected to arrive early tomorrow morning. It was clearly impossible.
“It doesn’t seem convenient.”
Leon shook his head after a brief pause.
“I have something scheduled for those days, so I won’t be available. And really, there’s no need to thank me… Oh, do you have any money on you?”
“Ah? Yes, yes.”
Hearing Leon’s question, Amy quickly rummaged through her pockets and pulled out an elegant leather wallet. She extracted a stack of bearer checks, each worth ten Gold Coins, and handed them over. Then, somewhat sheepishly, she added:
“I was taken so suddenly that I didn’t bring much. Will this be enough?”
“…”
Forget it… Never mind.
Staring at the checks—worth more than half a year’s salary for him—Leon remained silent for a moment before pushing them back toward her. He then fished around in his pocket, realized he didn’t have enough copper coins, and reluctantly handed her a silver coin instead. Pointing to the approaching steam carriage, he instructed:
“We’re not going the same way. When the carriage arrives, take it straight home. Remember to keep your checks hidden. I don’t want you getting robbed right after I saved you.”
“Also, the ride from Redwood Avenue to the Char Department Store headquarters is just over nine kilometers. The fare is two copper coins for the first five kilometers and one copper coin per kilometer after that. If you get off half a block early, it’ll cost six copper coins… Never mind, just give me my change back.”
Though their previous interactions suggested she wasn’t the typical sheltered heiress, Leon was still taken aback by her casually pulling out what amounted to a year’s salary. He feared she might actually try to pay the carriage fare with one of her checks.
After handing the silver coin to the carriage driver and retrieving three copper coins as change, Leon carefully noted the number on the back of the steam carriage before sending the doll-faced girl on her way. He then hailed another carriage, climbed aboard, and handed the driver a handful of coins.
“Thirty-five Shipbridge Street, Happiness Residence.”
