Chapter 135: Who on Earth Sneaks Around Like This?
So far, so good.
Leon emerged from the rose bushes with some effort, his clothes snagged and his boots muddy. He glanced at the six-story, magenta-hued mansion in the distance—Rose Manor—and nodded to himself, satisfied. The infiltration had been a success... for now.
Redwood Avenue was chaos incarnate, crawling with people searching for him. But thanks to the black goat's Soul Vision, he'd managed to take a few detours and slip past them without much trouble. And Rose Manor’s guards? They weren’t exactly slouches, but Leon wasn’t exactly playing fair either. With the "map hack" of Soul Vision guiding him, all it took was waiting for the patrols to clear out, weaving through the woods, and scaling two walls before he found himself deep within the estate.
According to Lisa’s instructions, the next step was simple: bypass the central magenta building, head to the four-story wing on the east side, and extract the target. Easy enough… right?
But then, something changed.
Through the lens of his Soul Vision, Leon noticed a sudden flurry of activity—a chaotic swarm of souls converging toward him. Before he could process what was happening, the alarm bells rang out across the manor. Two blinding xenon spotlights flared to life, their beams slicing through the daylight like disco lights gone rogue, sweeping wildly over the southwest corner of the rose garden.
It was broad daylight.
As the glaring lights zeroed in on him, Leon’s expression darkened. Unless the Marseille family had taken up throwing daytime raves, this could only mean one thing: his cover was blown. Not just blown—completely shredded. Whoever was after him didn’t just suspect; they’d pinpointed his exact location.
“Over here!”
“Follow the lights!”
“Spread out! Keep formation!”
“Don’t let him escape!”
The voices grew louder as the glowing souls closed in fast. Leon clenched his jaw. His stealth mission was officially kaput, and it was time to improvise.
Retreating wasn’t an option. He was smack dab in the heart of Rose Manor, surrounded by guards rushing toward the light show. Turning back would mean running straight into the thickest part of their net. On the other hand, the target was only about three or four hundred meters away. At his top speed, that distance wouldn’t take more than half a minute.
Decision made. Instead of retreating, he’d press forward. He’d punch through the main building, break into the east wing, grab the target, and bust out the other side of the estate. It was risky, sure, but it beat getting cornered.
In less than a second, Leon formulated his plan and sprang into action. Bursting out of the rose garden, he sprinted toward the main house. Within moments, he reached its base.
Crash.
Using his Sacred Spirit Pendant, he obliterated a window and leaped inside, landing gracefully thanks to the Parkour Badge’s boost. He landed in what appeared to be the kitchen, startling a group of chefs who barely had time to register his presence before he barreled through the door, smashing it open with a single kick. He tore down the corridor and burst into the ground-floor foyer.
“What’s going on?”
“What the hell?”
“Hey, stop—ow!”
Ignoring the startled shouts, Leon plowed through the room, knocking over a tall old man with a purplish-black soul. Without missing a beat, he charged into the opposite hallway, crashed through another door—likely a servant’s quarters—and vaulted out the shattered window amidst the shrieks of several young maids.
Ten seconds later, he was through the main building and heading toward the east wing. Clutching his Sacred Spirit Pendant tightly, he prepared for the final push.
BOOM.
A thunderous explosion rocked the second floor of the east wing as Leon blasted through the wall. Inside, a woman attempting to pick a lock barely had time to scream before Leon grabbed her, slung her over his shoulder, and smashed his way out of the room.
“Ahh!”
BOOM.
“Wait!”
BOOM.
“Oh my god!”
BOOM.
With the woman yelling in his ear, Leon demolished four more walls before leaping off the far side of the building and plunging into the wooded perimeter of the estate. Seven hundred meters ahead lay the outer fence of Rose Manor. Victory was within reach.
Solid.
Carrying the woman, Leon pushed further into the woods. Once he was certain he’d left the pursuing guards far behind, he allowed himself a small smile. Despite the unexpected complications, the mission was nearly complete. All that remained was delivering the daughter of the Char Department Store’s owner safely home.
“W-wait… wait a second…”
As Leon paused to pry open the iron gate, the woman on his shoulder finally regained her wits. Though she hadn’t seen his face clearly—or even knew his identity—she reasoned that anyone willing to rescue her from Rose Manor couldn’t possibly be aligned with the Marseilles. Most likely, her father had sent him.
Catching her breath and suppressing the nausea from the wild ride, the kidnapped heiress tapped Leon lightly on the back.
“Who… who are you?”
“…”
Right. Between the explosions, wall-smashing, and general mayhem, there hadn’t exactly been time for introductions. He hadn’t even told her he was working for her father.
Glancing back toward Rose Manor to confirm no immediate pursuit was visible, Leon set the woman down carefully, steadying her as she swayed dizzily.
“I’m your dad’s—uh…”
Before he could finish, the woman vanished. In her place stood a wide-eyed middle-aged woman and several bewildered old men. Upstairs, the observers who had witnessed Leon’s rampage were equally stunned by his unconventional greeting. Both sides froze momentarily, caught off guard by the bizarre turn of events.
Finally, the robed woman—the one who seemed to know a thing or two—snapped out of it first. Smiling faintly, she extended a hand of goodwill.
“I’m a bishop of the Scale of Gold’s Prosperity Branch. You can call me—”
Bang.
Without hesitation, Leon activated his Sacred Spirit Pendant the moment he heard “Scale of Gold.” There was no time for pleasantries. Her head exploded like a watermelon dropped from a skyscraper.
Even in death, her soul lingered, hovering dumbfounded where her body had been, a giant question mark floating above her purple-black aura.
This wasn’t good. An ambush.
Leon didn’t have time to figure out the details, but one thing was clear: killing a Sacred Spirit of the Scale of Gold meant he’d made enemies long ago. Now, his eyes darted to the remaining members of the cult around him. His grip tightened on the Sacred Spirit Pendant once more.
