Chapter 91: Gan Yanyu's Pink Side

"Hmm...maybe?"

Gan Yanyu herself wasn’t entirely sure how to explain it. How could she? Sometimes, even girls don’t fully understand what’s going on in the depths of their own subconscious minds. At that moment, her thoughts had been pure—untainted by doubt or distraction. She’d let go of all muscle memory, surrendering completely to the music as she drew the bow across the strings, over and over again, lost in the flow.

Suddenly recalling something, Lin Tian asked, "So, how do you feel about your performance? What’s your evaluation?"

The question caught her off guard. Almost instantly, a blush crept up Gan Yanyu’s cheeks, painting them a soft shade of pink. She began twirling a strand of hair around her finger, her long legs brushing against each other nervously.

"To be honest...I was actually pretty satisfied," she admitted shyly.

"How satisfied?" Lin Tian pressed, curious to hear more.

"At the time, I thought we’d created the most amazing music," she said softly, then quickly lowered her head, embarrassed by her own boldness.

"That’s exactly it!" Lin Tian exclaimed, snapping his fingers triumphantly.

You see, Gan Yanyu had two standout qualities.

First, she was an extraordinary cellist. Yet despite this undeniable talent, she often doubted herself, relying heavily on muscle memory to get through performances, as though she didn’t trust her own abilities.

Second, she was stunningly beautiful. Unlike her modesty when it came to her musical prowess, Gan Yanyu was startlingly self-aware about her looks. Whenever the topic arose, she’d offer brutally honest opinions that defied every expectation people had of her. And when Lin Tian reacted with surprise, she’d simply blink innocently at him, as if to say, Isn’t it obvious? Of course I’m cute.

It was infuriatingly endearing.

For all her confidence in her appearance, Gan Yanyu remained painfully humble about her music. So for her to now express such high praise for her own performance was significant—a breakthrough, even.

Clearly, the key reason she hadn’t suffered an episode during the concert was her newfound confidence in her music. Lin Tian reached this conclusion with growing excitement.

Stage fright, after all, was just an amplification of contradictions: the audience’s gaze, the harsh stage lights, the suffocating tension. But if one had enough faith in their art, those external pressures faded into insignificance. The only thing left to affect her would be the emotional weight of the music itself—and that, thankfully, was manageable.

This realization filled Lin Tian with hope. Gan Yanyu’s condition wasn’t incurable. There was a path forward, however uncertain it might seem right now. Just knowing that made his heart soar. It meant Gan Yanyu wasn’t destined to remain a tragic figure forever. A future awaited her—one where she could thrive.

"..."

"Lin Tian," Gan Yanyu broke the silence, stifling a yawn. Sleepiness was beginning to creep in. "Tomorrow...are we walking to school together?"

Lin Tian hesitated for a moment before replying, "Sure."

"Okay."

---

The next morning, Lin Tian stood waiting outside their apartment building, backpack slung casually over his shoulder. Having arrived early, he scrolled through his phone without much urgency.

"Lin Tian."

At the sound of her voice behind him, he turned around.

There stood Gan Yanyu, dressed in her school uniform, backpack secured firmly on her shoulders as she jogged toward him. A gentle breeze swept past, lifting strands of her hair and brushing against her delicate face. She looked like she’d stepped straight out of a painting.

In that moment, Lin Tian felt it deeply—the undeniable reality that Gan Yanyu was truly starting her life as a high school student.

Stopping in front of him, Gan Yanyu extended her hand, palm facing upward. "Can I borrow this?"

"What?" Lin Tian blinked, confused.

She pointed delicately to the red hair tie wrapped around his wrist. "That."

"Oh, this?" He unwrapped it from his wrist. "It’s already yours. You don’t need to ask to borrow something that belongs to you."

"I gave it to you, so it’s yours now," she replied with a light laugh, taking the hair tie from him. "Thank you."

With practiced ease, Gan Yanyu held the tie between her teeth, gathered her dark tresses, and tied them into a sleek, high ponytail. The motion was fluid, almost cinematic. Turning slightly, she tilted her head and asked cautiously, "How does it look? Do I look like a proper high schooler now?"

"You always wear your uniform anyway," Lin Tian teased, chuckling softly. Gan Yanyu’s wardrobe consisted mostly of dresses; casual wear was rare for her. Aside from swapping her cello case for a backpack, not much had changed.

"What can I do about it?" Gan Yanyu sighed dramatically. "It’s not like I planned it this way."

Lin Tian raised a finger. "That’s where a magical tool comes in handy."

"A magical tool?" Her brow furrowed in confusion.

Without warning, Lin Tian swiftly moved his hand behind her head and produced—with the flair of a magician—a small, dainty pink watch.

Gan Yanyu’s eyes widened in astonishment. "For me?" she breathed.

"It’s a gift," Lin Tian explained. "You gave me the hair tie, so I figured I should return the favor. I originally thought about getting you a hair clip, but you already bought that sheep-themed one. Then I realized students need watches to keep track of time." As he spoke, Gan Yanyu suddenly threw her arms around him in an unexpected hug.

Lin Tian froze, his heart pounding wildly.

"Thank you, Lin Tian," she whispered, looking up at him with shining eyes.

"Y-you’re welcome," he stammered, scratching the back of his head as heat rushed to his cheeks. His heartbeat thundered in his ears. This...this felt incredible.

After releasing him, Gan Yanyu quickly fastened the watch onto her wrist and held it up to admire it under the sunlight. Its glass surface gleamed brilliantly.

"Why did you choose pink?" she asked curiously. She’d assumed Lin Tian would pick something more mature, given the image she usually projected.

"Your room," he replied matter-of-factly. "I’ve been inside before, remember?"

The instant the words left his mouth, Gan Yanyu’s face turned crimson. She clapped her hands over her mouth in mortification. "Y-you saw everything?!"

"Pretending to be all classical and sophisticated on the outside, but secretly drowning in pink everywhere...yeah, it’s kind of fascinating," Lin Tian teased, stroking his chin with mock seriousness.

"N-no, it’s not like that!" Gan Yanyu protested, her voice tinged with both frustration and shyness. Covering her face with her hands, she groaned, feeling utterly mortified.

"But..." Lin Tian paused, grinning mischievously. "I really like it. If Miss Gan wants to show me more of this pink side of hers, I’d be very happy."
