Chapter 12: Whirlpool Crocodile (Part 2)
At Fei Yin’s insistence, Elegant Strings stripped off every piece of gear and stowed it safely into his enchanted bag—except for the glasses on his face. Without them, he probably wouldn’t have even been able to spot A’Stain if he’d swum straight into its gaping jaws.
Standing shirtless, the elf looked lean—on the edge of frail—but not entirely weak. Beneath his ribs, one could very loosely make out what might generously be called “muscle.”
With a fluid dive and a clean splash, he plunged into the water. Watching him vanish beneath the surface, I couldn’t help but feel a knot tighten in my stomach.
This wasn’t just a swim. It was a death sentence for most. Facing a level-38 raging beast in open water with nothing but bare hands? Even the most agile escape artist would struggle to come out alive.
It wasn’t long before a few bubbles broke the surface where he had disappeared. My grip on sword and shield tightened instinctively. Something was coming up—and I braced myself for a monster leaping from the depths.
But then… nothing. The water stilled again.
"Jeff, did you see anything?" Fei Yin craned her neck, scanning the river’s surface. We both saw nothing.
Then more bubbles rose—a cluster this time, faster, stronger, like something was stirring below. But compared to the size of A’Stain, they seemed almost insignificant.
A moment later, the water shifted again with a low gurgle, and—
There he was.
Elegant Strings floated upward, arms and legs dangling, belly up like a bloated fish. Eyes rolled back, lips tinged blue, his stomach puffed out like he'd swallowed half the river. By all appearances—he had been dead for some time.
We scrambled to pull him out. Though I’d seen comrades fall before, I still felt clumsy and helpless fumbling with his limp body. Fei Yin, ever composed, dragged him aside without ceremony and started a fire. She seasoned a few strips of wild beef and grilled them over the flames until they were perfectly seared—charred on the outside, tender within.
She held out three steaming plates.
“Grilled Steak,” she announced casually. “Boosts defense by fifteen points for a short time.”
That’s right. Fei Yin’s secondary class was Chef. She never missed a chance to practice, even in grave moments like these. And despite her many flaws, no one could deny her culinary talent.
We had barely finished our meal when Elegant Strings coughed up the last of the riverwater in his lungs and groggily opened his eyes. His lips were still pale, but color had returned to his cheeks.
“What happened?” I asked, gripping his arm anxiously. “How did you die so fast? Did the crocodile use some kind of ability? Couldn’t you even try to escape?”
He looked away, clearly embarrassed. “The crocodile? I don’t even know what it looked like. I didn’t see it at all.”
“The moment I hit the water, I sank like a stone,” he muttered, tugging at a clump of wet hair. “I kicked, I thrashed—I couldn’t float. I tried to move forward, but I couldn’t get anywhere. I tried calling for help, but you couldn’t hear me…”
He hesitated, then mumbled sheepishly, “…Actually, I drowned. I can’t swim.”
Silence fell.
Absolute silence.
We stared at him, stunned into wordlessness.
From somewhere above, a crow cawed twice—long, mournful cries that somehow sounded like sarcastic commentary.
“You complete idiot!” Fei Yin exploded after a brief pause.
Her hair was a mess, her eyes bloodshot, veins bulging on her forehead as she screamed like a banshee descending from the underworld. Magical energy crackled violently in her palms, raw and barely restrained, threatening to spiral out of control.
“When will you ever start thinking?! You can’t swim, yet you go jumping into the water like some suicidal fool! Do you have any idea how long we waited for you—”
“I got carried away! I forgot about it! And underwater, there’s no feeling of suffocation—it wasn’t until I died that I realized I’d already drowned!”
“Just listen to me for a second—don’t hit me! Put the staff down! Calm down—what are you doing now? Don’t raise your hand like that—stop casting—oh, come ON! Stop shooting ice arrows at me! That’s not what I meant—ice spears are expensive!”
“I’m going to kill you! For the good of the people! For the glory of the nation!”
“What does national glory have to do with beating me up?!”
“Who cares?! Any excuse is good enough! Just take it like a man!”
“Aaagh! Someone save me! This lunatic’s gone too far! No hitting below the belt! Not there! MY BUTT!”
As Anser Array and I watched helplessly, waves of dazzling magical projectiles surrounded Elegant Strings, each one striking with merciless precision. His pitiful, echoing screams pierced the air like a wounded animal.
Fei Yin had clearly snapped. Normally obsessed with saving every coin, she was now gleefully draining expensive mana potions to unleash devastating spells like Frost Storm—a spell that drained her MP reserves rapidly. There was no doubt about it: she had lost her mind.
Still, buried deep in that fury, some trace of rationality remained. Otherwise, Elegant Strings wouldn't have survived.
As it was, he was left barely clinging to life—but at least he didn’t have to make another humiliating trip back from the resurrection point.
