Chapter 10: The Lair of the Dark Elves (Part 2)
With a sharp whoosh, the Red Hill Summoner unleashed a spell that amplified the combat effectiveness of his servitor. Watching the glowing aura settle over the creature, while I stood there bare of any magical protection and Fei Yin sported that same, maddeningly indifferent expression—like butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth—I couldn't help but feel like I was even lower on the totem pole than the summoned beast.
Forget what Fei Yin had ordered me to do. I didn’t bother chasing after the enemy summoner from afar. Instead, I instinctively stepped protectively in front of Anser Array and Elegant Strings, raised my shield, and braced myself for the incoming charge from the Red Hill Piercer and the hulking hak’tu demon.
Then came the swoosh—a single arrow zipped through the air from my left, flying straight toward the hideous face of the hak’tu demon. It moved so fast that my eyes couldn’t follow its trail; it was as if the slender, deadly projectile had vanished mid-flight only to reappear lodged in the monster’s eye socket with a sickening thwack. The sound of wind slicing past still echoed faintly in my ears, and my eardrums throbbed slightly from the shockwave of its velocity.
“Nice shot!” I shouted, impressed beyond words, before instinctively turning my head to see who’d fired such an incredible shot—
And then… “Uh…”
I blinked in surprise. Standing just beside me was the elven archer, Elegant Strings, his trademark glasses strapped firmly over his face. Bow held loosely in his left hand, fingers gently resting on the string, he stood with arms hanging at his sides, staring wide-eyed at the now-dead demon.
It feels a little cruel to admit this out loud, but I have to be honest—it felt very strange seeing him land a successful hit from more than three paces away. Sure, I knew that the enchanted glasses improved his vision, but until now, his effective bow range hadn’t even reached the length of my sword’s reach.
Even Elegant Strings himself looked stunned by his own success—maybe even more so than I was. His hands dangled limply, mouth agape in disbelief, eyes practically popping behind those thick lenses. It was a small miracle they hadn’t shattered under the sheer force of his widened gaze.
“You saw that, right?!” He suddenly burst out, pointing excitedly at the dead servitor. “I hit it! I actually hit it! That was me! Oh man, oh man, I did it! Ha ha ha—oh crap!”
He hadn’t even finished celebrating his very first long-range kill when another arrow flew down from the nearby tower and struck him square between the eyes. With a yelp, he dropped to his knees, clutching his forehead and groaning in pain. Yet somehow, between the grunts and gasps, he was still chuckling proudly to himself, making odd little slurping noises through his teeth.
“What the heck is wrong with him?” Anser Array asked curiously, watching the bizarre display unfold.
“Oh nothing,” Fei Yin replied offhandedly, already launching another glacial spear at the Red Hill Summoner. “That’s just how he celebrates.”
“Seriously?” Anser seemed even more intrigued. “Does he always do that whenever he scores a hit?”
“I don’t know about every time,” Fei Yin shrugged, throwing yet another quick ice bolt, “but I do know that this is the first time he’s ever landed a shot within normal bow range.”
The battle between the two mages was anything but balanced. Fei Yin was easily dominating the Red Hill Summoner, thanks both to her superior level and the enchanted gear boosting her magical output. Without needing our help at all, she was steadily overpowering her opponent.
At this point, I thought Anser would’ve been better off focusing on the fight instead of worrying about Elegant Strings’ sudden marksmanship. Not that I had high hopes for what Anser could contribute anyway. I mean, how much damage could someone really expect from a girl who found things like bears and pythons adorable and couldn’t bring herself to harm them?
Especially when facing off against enemies like these dark elves—handsome, chiseled, and effortlessly cool. From experience, I knew girls like Anser usually folded the moment they laid eyes on good-looking guys, no matter which side they were on.
But then came a thunderous BOOM!—loud enough to shatter my thoughts into pieces, along with whatever mild skepticism I still harbored about Anser’s usefulness.
Unlike bows or crossbows, muskets had shorter range and slower fire rates, but packed devastating power. Their spread shot could cover a wide area, hitting multiple targets at once.
The charging Red Hill Piercer and hak’tu demon hadn’t expected it. They were caught in the full blast of iron shot and sent sprawling across the ground like ragdolls, their advance completely shattered. The Piercer tried to recover and resume his charge, but his movements were sluggish and awkward—clearly, the name “Piercer” no longer suited him at all.
Through the smoke tinged with sulfur, I saw Anser standing tall, musket steady in both hands, the stock pressed firmly against her jawline. Her left eye closed, her right focused sharply ahead like a blade ready to strike. Her long black hair whipped wildly behind her in the wind, adding a fierce edge to her already striking figure.
Well… okay. I’ll admit it: I was wrong about her. Totally biased. And I take back everything I said about her being useless in a fight.
In fact, I was starting to understand something. Her soft heart and questionable taste in aesthetics only applied to animals. When it came to intelligent beings or humanoid foes, she was as ruthless and fearless as any seasoned warrior—enough to make most tough guys sweat.
“Uh… Anser…” Even Elegant Strings looked shaken, nervously wiping a cold sweat from his brow as he eyed the still-smoking barrel of her gun. “What exactly… what do you do for work?”
Anser exhaled slowly, blowing away the remaining smoke from the muzzle before expertly reloading fresh powder and shot into the chamber. She packed it down lightly, then took aim again at the recovering Piercer and the monstrous servitor.
“I’m a veterinarian,” she said with a calm smile—and then BANG! She pulled the trigger without hesitation.
Another deafening roar rang out. Our unlucky opponents went flying backward once more, bloodied and barely clinging to life.
“Oh…” Elegant Strings nodded knowingly, while I was left even more confused. A veterinarian? I didn’t even know that was a thing in this world.
“Your rifle’s pretty strong,” Elegant Strings finally managed, shaking off his awe and returning to his bow. Now that he had the precision-enhancing glasses, his shooting began to improve dramatically. Each shaft sticking out of the hak’tu demon was proof that his earlier hit wasn’t just beginner’s luck.
“It’s a reward from a hidden quest,” Anser explained casually, though a slight frown tugged at her lips. “It’s… kind of too big, though. Doesn’t look great on me.”
Her comment sparked my curiosity. I took a closer look at the rare weapon responsible for such devastation:
Musket ‘Sela Jiong’ — Reportedly once wielded by a famous centaur ranger, this firearm boasts incredible power.
+78 Attack | +9 Accuracy | +50 HP | Spread Fire | 30% chance to knock down targets…
