Chapter 138: That Little Brat
In practical terms, while the security team wasn't officially mercenaries, in the eyes of the authorities, they were essentially the same—both considered unpredictable and uncontrollable.
So when Luke mentioned that the mission was in China, Anna was initially skeptical.
China was a no-go zone for mercenaries—a universally accepted truth among their ranks. Though the security team at least operated under some semblance of legitimacy and didn’t fear legal repercussions, there was still a significant difference between completing a mission and being replaced by someone else who might finish it for them, only to have you sent back by the scruff of your neck.
Given the choice, the security team would rather face the deadliest jungles than set foot in China.
But then Luke added that the group responsible for ambushing Wang Ping and Jacob might send operatives into China. With that revelation, Anna's doubts vanished.
Pride could be sacrificed, but vengeance couldn’t wait.

Wang Ping’s favorite thing about Shengjiawu was the air.
It carried a distinct scent, unlike anything he’d experienced elsewhere. If pressed to describe it, he’d say it had a unique aroma. In the Maasai Mara plains of Africa, the air always reeked of blood. In the forests of Daxing’anling, it smelled of pine resin. But here, in Shengjiawu, it held the faint fragrance of green tea.
Wang Ping loved this smell; it made him feel lighter, more at ease.
At sunrise, as golden rays spilled over the horizon, a certain honey badger stood atop a bamboo grove on the tea plantation hill. Facing the heavens, he stretched out his paws, mimicking slow, rhythmic movements with each breath. The mountain breeze whipped through his denim jacket, making it billow behind him like the cape of some mythical beast meditating in the wild.
Below, snippets of conversation drifted up from tea farmers already hard at work. It was harvest season, and the workers hired by Granny Sheng had risen before dawn to begin picking leaves. Had it not been for the cover of the bamboo grove, Wang Ping wouldn’t have dared to practice his moves so openly.
Suddenly, rustling sounds came from within the bamboo grove. Dahei emerged, tongue lolling, and barked once to signal it was time for breakfast.
“What’s worrying you? Come on, buddy, keep me company for a bit longer!”
Wang Ping stopped mid-motion, plopped down onto the ground, and waved Dahei closer.
“Woof!”
Dahei trotted over, lying beside Wang Ping as they both gazed at the glowing valley bathed in morning light.
Another shuffle echoed nearby. Dahei tilted his head just in time to see the honey badger sneakily rummage through a small pocket near his tail. Out came a pack of cigarettes, followed by a sleek metal lighter retrieved from another pocket.
Click.
The metallic lid flipped open. Wang Ping placed a cigarette between his teeth, leaned into the flame, took a drag, and exhaled a perfect smoke ring. His carefree demeanor melted away any pretense of wisdom or dignity. The “great sage” image evaporated entirely.
“Hmph…”
Dahei grumbled softly, shifting his head away from the secondhand smoke.

Third Floor, Granny Sheng’s House
Gu Dad clutched a wad of tissues, legs crossed tightly, brows furrowed as he rummaged through the clothes rack.
“What are you looking for? You look miserable,” Gu Mom asked, seated at the vanity applying foundation.
“I need to use the restroom… uh, no, where did I put my cigarettes?” Gu Dad muttered, perplexed.
“You and your bad habits! Who smokes in the bathroom? Here, take mine.” Gu Mom set down her makeup sponge, fetched her purse, and began searching. After a moment, she looked up, equally baffled. “Where are my cigarettes? They’re gone too?”
Just then, Dahei carried Wang Ping home, arriving to find three delivery tricycles parked outside. Couriers hauled boxes large and small into the courtyard.
Gu Lang, unusually early riser clad only in beach shorts, stood in the yard counting packages.
“Wow, opening an online store now?” Wang Ping hopped off Dahei’s back and inspected one of the boxes. Sure enough, the sender’s name read Wang An. He checked another box—it was also from Wang An.
A vein throbbed visibly on Wang Ping’s forehead as he watched Gu Lang gleefully unpack the deliveries. A wave of frustration washed over him—not just for Gu Lang, but also for his younger sister.
One shamelessly conned the other, who blindly accepted everything without question. Did they even consider how much stuff this was? Three vans’ worth—and expecting all of it to fit in that Jeep Wrangler?
Everyone seemed accustomed to such reckless spending. Neither Granny nor Gu Lang’s parents intervened.
After some thought, Wang Ping decided it was necessary to warn the little brat not to push things too far.
---
After breakfast, everyone went about their business. Declining Gu Lang’s offer to accompany him downtown for martial arts lessons, Wang Ping retreated to his room and pulled out a dusty laptop from beneath his bed.
With delicate precision, he logged into his QQ account, painstakingly navigating the cursor until he located Wang An’s username in his contacts list.
“How’ve you been? How’s business at the shop?” he typed, sending the message.
Beep beep beep.
Not long after, a reply popped up.
Wang Xiao’an: “Whoa! Is that you? A ghost from the past! I’m so touched! Wait… who are you again?”
“…”
Wang Ping’s paw froze mid-air. He took several deep breaths.
Wang Daping: “I’m your brother!”
Wang Xiao’an: “Sorry, wrong person. I don’t have a brother—just a sister named Ping Ping.”
“Grrr…”
Wang Ping felt his blood pressure spike. His tail twitched with barely contained rage.
Wang Daping: “You want to pick a fight? Hurry up—I’m busy! I’ll leave soon!”
Wang Xiao’an: “Ohhh, checking in on me, huh? Got it. Cough cough… Ah, dear brother, life’s tough! No customers, broke as hell! Send me a few thousand bucks so I can get by, okay?”
“Bullshit!”
Furiously gripping the white fur on his head, Wang Ping fantasized about storming to Shanghai to beat the living daylights out of his sister.
“That little devil! She just scammed a big client and now she’s trying to bleed me dry!”
Then it hit him—every time he contacted Wang An in the past, she’d always complained about money troubles. And every single time, he ended up sending her whatever meager savings he had. Not even enough left for a wedding fund.
“My money…”
Heartbroken, Wang Ping collapsed onto the bed.
After a prolonged silence, Wang An sent another message.
Wang Xiao’an: “Hey, don’t tell me you’re broke? As a man, having zero savings is pathetic! Call me ‘Sis,’ and maybe I’ll show mercy and lend you a hand!”
Wang Ping sat up, staring at the screen. Just as he prepared to type a response, he paused.
“Is she deliberately provoking me because she doesn’t want me to worry?”
After a moment, he replied: “How could I possibly be broke? I’m charming and irresistible—plenty of adoring fans fight over paying my bills! Besides, let me remind you: be honest in business. Don’t scam people, or you’ll end up in trouble I won’t bail you out of!”
Wang Xiao’an: “Hmm… You’re acting weird today. Normally, you’d curse me out, but now you sound kinda… gross.”
Wang Ping: …
Damn it. Why am I wasting my time worrying about this brat?!
