Chapter 139: The Governor’s Descent into Madness

The next morning, Tang Fang was stirred awake by the crisp chirping of birds. He slowly opened his eyes to find the golden hues of dawn spilling across his eyelids. A gentle breeze swept through the air, carrying with it the soft lapping of waves against the lake's surface—“shhh, shhh”—a soothing rhythm that seemed to echo the quiet serenity of the world around him.

Taking a deep breath, he turned his head and saw that the space beside him was empty. Claire had already left without a word.

“She truly is an admirable girl,” he murmured, stretching languidly before rising to his feet. With one last wistful glance at the shimmering waters of the lake, he turned and began walking back toward the base.

If only life could remain this peaceful forever...

As he made his way along the path, Orbital Command Center’s robotic Adjutant transmitted an urgent message directly into his mind: “Commander, our monitoring system has intercepted critical communications from Krotan’s satellite network.”

“Go ahead,” Tang Fang said tersely. Instantly, two pieces of filtered communication flashed in his thoughts.

Both originated from Falkbys Palace in Rheinstadt. The first was addressed to Yaho Naval Port, where the South Sea Second Fleet was stationed on the southern tip of Odin Continent. It read as follows: Tomorrow, military headquarters will hold a memorial service for the soldiers who perished during the Battle of the North Sea. Families of fallen soldiers are invited to attend. The ceremony will be led by one of the most revered priests in the land. All personnel not assigned to essential duties must participate.

The second transmission was routed via polar-orbiting military satellites to Sarrolhas Missile Base on the opposite hemisphere. As Tang Fang finished reading it, his expression darkened dramatically. This was a launch order—for a nuclear missile. Scheduled for 11 a.m. tomorrow, its target? None other than Yaho Naval Port itself.

A nuclear strike on their own naval port? Had Aldrich lost his mind completely? Or had he descended so far into madness that there was no turning back?

Stay calm, Tang Fang told himself. Recalling the strategic layout of the Makanda campaign, he realized Aldrich wasn’t nearly as incompetent as many Krotans believed. On the contrary, the man was adept at concealing his true capabilities in military matters. Marquess Cain likely understood this perfectly when he dispatched Aldrich to Krotan—to keep Ramsden General and Hatto Naval Port in check.

And why would Cain set up such a move? It was easy enough to understand. After all, this region straddled the border between Monya and Sulru. Though peace currently reigned, who knew what unexpected events might arise? Should rebellion or invasion strike Hatto Naval Port, the Krotan forces under Aldrich’s command would play an invaluable role, buying time for the empire to respond.

With Aldrich in place, three objectives were achieved: managing Planet Krotan, restraining Ramsden, and safeguarding the frontier. Cain Rudolf—a cunning old fox seasoned by years in politics—had crafted a masterstroke indeed.

But even Cain couldn’t have foreseen the emergence of the Garcia Resistance, forcing Aldrich to shed his facade of incompetence and reveal his remarkable military prowess.

Would someone like that really unleash a nuclear weapon on his own troops?

Then Tang Fang recalled the earlier intercepted message about the memorial service at Yaho Naval Port—the gathering of bereaved families, the presence of the most esteemed priest—and suddenly, everything clicked.

He thought of the Garcia Resistance’s rallying cry, Marion’s Declaration of Freedom. In an instant, a chilling realization coursed through him. This entire situation was nothing more than Aldrich’s calculated scheme—a desperate gambit designed to turn public opinion against the resistance.

By destroying Yaho Naval Port, Aldrich would elevate his tactics to a grand strategic level. If Tang Fang’s suspicions proved correct, propaganda blaming Marion for orchestrating this catastrophic disaster would soon engulf the entirety of Planet Krotan.

Freedom? Democracy? Justice? Look at your beloved elder, leader of the rebels. What has he done? Slaughtered defenseless families of fallen soldiers, obliterated a crippled naval port while they were down, and resorted to using nuclear weapons—an act condemned by both heaven and earth. This is the true face of the Garcia Resistance: demons in sheep’s clothing.

When that happened, Marion Duncan’s influence among the people of Krotan would plummet overnight. Even members of the rebel army might begin to doubt their cause, ultimately losing faith entirely. And as for what came after… well, it didn’t take much imagination to figure that out.

What choice would Marion have then? Denial? Unless someone possessed a particularly twisted sense of humor, how could ordinary citizens believe that anyone would drop a nuclear bomb on their own forces? Especially considering the target was a naval port housing an entire fleet—at least in the eyes of civilians unaware that it was little more than a hollow shell now. Those who knew better would be dead once the nuke struck.

If Aldrich succeeded in executing this devastating blow, it would leave Marion and his rebellion cornered. Having suffered catastrophic losses in the Battle of the North Sea and losing fifteen ships to Tang Fang’s efforts, the South Sea Second Fleet existed in name only. Sacrificing a weakened naval port in exchange for a monumental strategic victory? By any measure, it was a bargain too good to pass up.

Unfortunately for Aldrich, however, the heavily encrypted military communications stood no chance against Orbital Command Center’s advanced eavesdropping and decryption technology. Like the emperor’s new clothes, the encryption might as well not exist.

“This information needs to reach Montgomery immediately,” Tang Fang thought grimly. Without wasting another moment, he hurried back to the base.

By the time he arrived, Arroz, Housen, and others had already awakened. They were waiting near the armored vehicles. On the other side, Claire had resumed her usual serious demeanor, directing special operations teams and miners as they planted explosives on key military installations.

Seeing Tang Fang rush over looking troubled, Nehemiah approached with Grant and a few others. “What’s wrong?” Nehemiah asked. “Has the government army arrived?”

Tang Fang shook his head. “It’s worse than that. I’ll explain once I’ve spoken to Colonel Montgomery.”

Without further ado, he climbed into the armored vehicle and used the communication equipment to relay the intercepted intelligence to Montgomery, stationed far away at Makanda Arsenal. When asked about the source of the information, Tang Fang simply replied that it was confidential.

As expected, Montgomery accepted the news without question. After listening intently to Tang Fang’s analysis of the potential outcome, he rushed off to contact Arctic Command Headquarters.

Once the call ended, Nehemiah’s face turned ashen. Like Montgomery, he trusted Tang Fang implicitly. From the mysterious man’s arrival alongside his elite unit, they had saved countless lives within the rebel ranks and earned everyone’s unwavering trust.

Though questions lingered about the origins of such advanced gear—the powered armor, the miraculous healing agents—it hardly seemed surprising anymore that they could intercept military communications.
