Chapter 137: You Can’t, But I Can

Without a word, without hesitation, Claire drew her sidearm and pointed it at the forehead of one of the wounded comrades lying on the stretcher.

“Captain…” Iyeta called out softly, her voice trembling with anguish.

Claire remained silent, her expression as cold and unyielding as ever. Her finger tightened around the trigger, slowly applying pressure. Everyone turned away, unable to bear witness to what was about to happen.

But just as the bullet was about to leave the chamber, a hand shot out, pressing down on the barrel of the gun before wrenching it from her grasp.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Tang Fang’s voice rasped, raw with emotion. He couldn’t believe it—this girl with such a delicate, elegant face could be so utterly heartless. How could she pull the trigger when faced with these familiar, pale faces?

“To give them peace,” Claire said, her tone devoid of any inflection, chilling to the bone. It felt like standing not before a human being but a machine.

“If that were me lying there, I’d want the same.”

“But they aren’t you!” Tang Fang shouted, his anger rising despite knowing deep down that Claire had a point. Still, he couldn’t accept it—he couldn’t reconcile the fact that this icy woman could be so merciless.

He thought of Sam’s stubborn bravery, Grant’s integrity, Stivie’s loyalty, Montgomery’s good humor… and then he looked at this woman who now repelled him. She was too calm, too rational—calm enough to terrify and rational enough to unsettle.

These were her comrades, people who fought alongside her in the trenches. How could she possibly aim a gun at them?

Tang Fang’s mind flashed back to Zhou Ai, another female soldier. Though Zhou Ai was sharp as a blade when dealing with enemies, she never gave up on her comrades. Never.

"With the alliance’s medical capabilities, we can’t save them," Iyeta explained, her voice breaking slightly as she stepped beside Tang Fang. "Delaying only prolongs their suffering…" If given a choice, why would she abandon those she once fought shoulder-to-shoulder with? Sometimes, making a decision felt like driving a dagger into your own heart—it hurt both ways.

"You can’t, but I can." Tang Fang’s words weren’t loud, yet everyone present heard them clearly. Him? Heal radiation sickness?

For a moment, all eyes converged on him, most filled with confusion, doubt, and uncertainty.

He didn’t bother explaining. Instead, he swiftly opened the storage compartment on his shoulder and pulled out a bundle of syringes filled with an emerald-green liquid. Shoving several into Iyeta’s hands, he frowned when she simply stared at him in shock. “What are you waiting for? If you want to save them, get moving!”

“Oh… oh.” Iyeta snapped out of her daze, glanced at the syringes in her hands, and rushed over to one of the injured men. Though she didn’t know what the solution contained, her trust in Tang Fang compelled her to act.

Rolling up the patient’s sleeve, she located a vein and inserted the needle, slowly injecting the fluid. As the liquid drained from the syringe, the color began returning to the man’s face, and his labored breathing steadied.

After finishing the injection, Iyeta looked at the recovering patient, then back at the syringe in her hand. A bright, hearty smile spread across her face.

“Medics! Hurry… hurry and inject everyone!”

One by one, the syringes were distributed and administered to the wounded. Within minutes, those who had been incapacitated moments ago miraculously stood up, embracing their brothers-in-arms. Some cried, some laughed, others praised the heavens aloud.

“Brother, I’m back.”

“Robinson, stop crying—I’m still alive.”

“Bruno, ease up! You’re squeezing the life out of me.”

“…”

The stretchers lay discarded as the crowd embraced, their tear-filled eyes brimming with joy.

To be alive… how precious it truly was.

Tang Fang watched silently, feeling—for the first time—that beyond war, oppression, and exploitation, there were countless things worth cherishing. Some were right beside you; others required effort to uncover and appreciate.

“Atten-hut! Salute!” Benjamin’s commanding voice rang out. In the distance, the special ops team stood in perfect formation, offering sincere smiles, solemn salutes, and grateful gazes.

A recovered miner approached, hugging Tang Fang’s powered armor tightly, muttering repeatedly, “Thank you… thank you…”

Though thick armor separated them, Tang Fang could almost feel the man’s heartbeat—steady and strong, pulsing with vitality and youth.

Iyeta returned to his side unnoticed, staring at him in astonishment. “How is this possible? Even the Empire’s most advanced medical technology can’t cure radiation sickness with a single injection.”

Tang Fang chuckled, falling back on his usual absurd excuse: “It’s a family secret—I’m afraid I can’t share more.”

“A family secret?” Iyeta broke into a sweat. That sounded ridiculous. A family secret curing radiation sickness? Liar. And besides, she noticed something else—some soldiers hadn’t just recovered from radiation poisoning; even battle wounds had healed completely, as if reborn.

Such miraculous medicine dismissed with a mere “family secret”? Yet, recalling the tales Nehemiah shared about him—the annihilation of nearly 1,500 elite troops with just 38 men, the destruction of an entire mixed submarine and naval fleet, and his recent feat of tearing through a Heavy Armor Warrior barehanded—she found herself accepting it.

In the end, no matter where he came from or how many secrets he carried, as long as he stood with the rebels, he was a comrade, a brother.

As Iyeta lost herself in thought, Tang Fang scanned the area. Claire had vanished, and others nodded farewell before dispersing to handle post-battle affairs.

The distant sound of a ship’s horn echoed as the barricade at the base entrance lifted. Nehemiah, Bred, Xia Yuanhua, and others drove armored vehicles into the compound, heading straight for the radar control center.

Meanwhile, Grant, Arroz, and Housen completed their final cleanup tasks and walked toward where Tang Fang stood.
