Chapter 75: As Partners, This Is Quite Normal

Lin Tian was visiting a suit shop for the very first time.

To be honest, it was already an unusual sight to see two high school students walking into a place like this.

"This is one of our more popular styles recently, sir. You can take a look," the saleswoman said warmly.

The shop was brightly lit and exquisitely decorated. Despite their youthful appearances, the saleswoman didn’t brush them off. Instead, she patiently explained everything to Lin Tian.

"..."

After all, this was his first stage performance, so Lin Tian was being extremely cautious. But as he listened to the young saleswoman enthusiastically describe each detail, after staring at racks of suits for what felt like forever, he still couldn’t make up his mind.

Suits were just... too far out of his comfort zone.

Honestly, Lin Tian’s usual style consisted of T-shirts and baggy shorts. For formal occasions, washing his hair was about as much effort as he ever put in. His everyday appearance screamed "messy teenage boy template." And let’s not forget—Lin Tian sported the classic M-shaped bangs hairstyle straight out of anime protagonist central. The kind that practically screamed, “I’m a student! Ship me with anyone!”

Who on earth expected an M-banged kid to wear a suit?

"May I ask what you’re looking for, sir?" the saleswoman asked politely. "Business attire? Wedding? Dinner party?"

"Do you have any preferences regarding fabric?" She continued without missing a beat. "We typically use wool, cashmere, linen, or silk. Each has different textures, weights, and breathability."

"..."

"Something business-like, I guess," Lin Tian finally muttered.

Before he could think further, a navy-blue sample jacket was thrust into his arms. He looked up to see Gan Yanyu pressing the garment against his chest.

"Try this one," she said confidently.

Then, turning to the saleswoman with a polite smile, she added, "Could you help him try it on? Thank you."

Five minutes later...

The curtain of the fitting room swished open, and Lin Tian stepped out. Gan Yanyu, who had been sitting on the couch, instinctively stood up.

Her eyes widened as they locked onto him, unable to look away.

Broad shoulders stretched the tailored lines of the deep blue suit perfectly. A crisp white shirt peeked from beneath the collar, while a thin tie rested precisely between his well-defined collarbones. Lin Tian stood there adjusting the slightly-too-small cuffs of one sleeve—a move reminiscent of some superhero striking a pose. The subtle flash of silk lining at the edge of the sleeves complemented the suit beautifully.

"..."

Gan Yanyu’s eyes sparkled like they’d been sprinkled with stardust.

For once, Lin Tian found himself on the receiving end of her admiring gaze—it was usually him ogling her. This role reversal made him feel oddly flustered.

"How does it look?" he asked hesitantly.

"It looks amazing," Gan Yanyu replied earnestly, giving him a thumbs-up. "Lin Tian, you look even better in a suit than I imagined!"

Hearing her praise, Lin Tian stroked his chin and turned toward the mirror. Staring back at him was someone who resembled a goblin admiring its own reflection—not exactly the awkward teenager he'd anticipated but rather... surprisingly dashing?

Especially with how the white shirt hugged his muscular chest; unbuttoning the blazer would reveal quite the smoldering vibe. Damn. No wonder people said, A suit is a man's armor.

So this was what it felt like to wear armor.

"The fit is slightly loose, but the cut is excellent," Gan Yanyu commented, tugging gently at his sleeves. "Once we get a custom version tailored, it’ll be perfect."

"..."

It had been ages since someone last fussed over his clothes like this. Watching Gan Yanyu meticulously adjust his outfit, Lin Tian felt a strange warmth wash over him. It reminded him of those old romantic dramas where a new bride fusses over her groom’s wedding attire.

And then... her hand accidentally brushed against his chest.

"Ah~"

"Don’t make weird noises!" Gan Yanyu flushed red, trying (and failing) to sound stern.

"Miss Gan, didn’t you just poke me?" Lin Tian shot back, exasperated.

"But still..." Her voice trailed off, losing steam.

Earlier, while helping adjust his sleeves, her fingers had inadvertently grazed his chest.

So hard.

How could anyone’s chest muscles be this firm? Out of sheer curiosity, she pressed down lightly. Feeling them rise and fall with his breathing sent a jolt through her system. She quickly pulled her hand back, heart racing.

Breathing chest muscles… It was bizarre, fascinating, and utterly captivating.

Though Gan Yanyu hadn’t seen many others’, she was certain: among their peers, Lin Tian’s physique was undoubtedly top-tier.

"..."

Realizing her actions might have crossed a line, Gan Yanyu apologized softly. "Sorry, I didn’t mean to—"

"No worries," Lin Tian interrupted, though internally he thought, That actually felt pretty good. Next time, maybe I’ll return the favor.

As partners, such openness was normal, right?

But sensing the awkwardness, Lin Tian changed the subject instead. "So, shall we go with this design?"

"Do you like it?" Gan Yanyu asked seriously.

"I think so."

"Good."

After taking measurements and finalizing materials, Lin Tian left his contact information and completed the reservation. The price wasn’t cheap—it equaled two months’ rent—but Lin Tian loved this “armor.” Considering the advertising fees would arrive soon and knowing he rarely splurged on himself, he gritted his teeth and paid the deposit. By next Wednesday, his custom suit would be ready, and he’d step onto the stage wearing it.

---

On the ride to the concert hall, Lin Tian couldn’t resist asking Gan Yanyu, "You seem really invested in my outfits. Why?"

"Of course I care," Gan Yanyu responded firmly. "This performance reflects both of us. On competition day, I’ll dress up properly, and as my partner, you shouldn’t slack off either."

She had a point. If Gan Yanyu dressed elegantly and he showed up in baggy shorts, it’d definitely raise eyebrows. But if this was truly a shared responsibility...

"Does that mean I get a say in your outfit too?" Lin Tian teased.

"Huh?" Gan Yanyu blinked, caught off guard.

Lowering her head shyly, she murmured, "What… what do you want me to wear?"

"Really? I can choose?" Lin Tian grinned, delighted.

"As your stage partner, if you have requests, I’ll do my best to meet them," Gan Yanyu replied, her feet fidgeting nervously.

Though her thinking might come across as old-fashioned compared to others, her sense of aesthetics was impeccable. Over time, she’d shown Lin Tian plenty of dresses, subtly hinting at her preferences. Deep down, she was curious—what did Lin Tian envision her wearing onstage?

"School uniform," Lin Tian declared, pointing upward with a gleam in his eye.

"..."

"Are you silently cursing me, Miss Gan?"

"Not at all, I didn’t say anything," she retorted playfully, crossing her index fingers in an X-shape behind her back.

In the  end, Lin Tian gave up. Clearly, Gan Yanyu, a mere high school girl, had no idea about the allure of uniforms.

---

Soon, the car arrived at the concert hall. Stepping out, they faced a small plaza leading to Qingzhou Concert Hall—an opulent egg-shaped building glittering under the night sky. Even from outside, its grandeur radiated luxury.

Inside, the lobby glowed with bright lights, flanked by long corridors extending left and right. Half an hour before the concert began, scattered attendees wandered quietly, maintaining the serene atmosphere expected of such venues.

At the center stood tonight’s poster:

“Stellar Voices” Anniversary Concert”
“Symphony of Stars Orchestra”
“Galactic Melodies, A Journey of the Soul”
"Embark on a voyage through the cosmos via notes, experiencing tranquility and exhilaration alike."

Below the text were photos of the conductor and orchestra members. Tonight, this ensemble would carry the entire concert.

"Quite the workload," Lin Tian mused. Performing three pieces alongside Gan Yanyu already seemed exhausting enough. Handling an entire concert must be grueling.

"This orchestra is famous," Gan Yanyu chimed in. "Despite its youth, most members graduated from world-class music academies."

While Gan Yanyu lingered near the main posters, Lin Tian wandered down a side corridor and spotted something intriguing.

"Miss Gan, check this out—" he called.

Approaching, Gan Yanyu gasped softly.

“Resonance of Souls Concert”
“A Gathering of Qingzhou’s Rising Stars. Notes Leap, Souls Resonate, Dreams Unfold Here.”

This was the poster for Gan Yanyu’s upcoming concert next week. Compared to the previous event, this one clearly aimed bigger. An entire corridor was plastered with these posters, one of which prominently featured Gan Yanyu herself.

"Wow..."

In the photo, Gan Yanyu wore heavy makeup and a classical red gown, gracefully playing her cello. Lin Tian pointed at the poster and teased, "Who’s this beautiful lady?"

"That’s me—with makeup," Gan Yanyu huffed, placing a finger over his lips to silence him.

Gazing at the image, she grew pensive. This photo was taken during the municipal competition “the Starlight Cup” a year and a half ago. Afterward, she hadn’t performed domestically for over a year. Now, standing here, emotions churned within her. What would people think of her? How did they perceive her cello?

But this time, she wasn’t alone. Turning to Lin Tian, she saw him studying the poster thoughtfully.

Finally, he spoke earnestly. "Miss Gan, I think you look better without makeup."

"...Fine, fine," Gan Yanyu laughed, covering her face. Only Lin Tian would obsess over looks constantly.

But as partners, caring about each other’s presentation was only natural.

"Is there a restroom?" Lin Tian suddenly asked.

"There. Let me go with you," Gan Yanyu replied, pointing down the hallway.

"Sure."

---

Exploring the venue, Lin Tian glanced at a few more posters. Anxiety began creeping in. Thinking about performing here next week with Gan Yanyu made him want to run to the bathroom.

It wasn’t self-doubt—it was concern for Gan Yanyu, whose mental state sometimes worried him.

Just as they took a couple of steps forward, a voice called out behind them.

"Hey, isn’t that Gan Yanyu?"

Turning reflexively, Lin Tian realized the speaker wasn’t addressing Gan Yanyu directly but staring at the poster instead. Two women stood before it, dressed artistically with berets and wire-rimmed glasses—the type who posted concert selfies on social media.

"Who’s Gan Yanyu?" one asked.

"Gan Yanyu?! The granddaughter of cellist legend Old Gan!" her companion exclaimed.

"Oh yeah, now I remember," the other said slowly. "Didn’t she used to be famous around here? I thought she went abroad?"

"Beats me. Guess she’s back now."

The first woman smirked mischievously. "Word is, she went to England to polish her credentials. Probably came back because she wasn’t good enough. Must’ve snuck home, huh?"

"Ha! Makes sense," her friend giggled.

"I never liked her anyway. Always flaunting her grandfather’s fame and hyping herself as some child prodigy. If I had a famous grandfather, I’d be just as well-known."

Arms crossed, the woman sneered at the poster. "Now she gets to perform at ‘Resonance.’ Bet she pulled strings again using Grandpa’s connections."

"What nonsense are you spouting?" a male voice interrupted sharply.

Startled, Gan Yanyu froze. Before she could react, Lin Tian strode forward angrily.

"Why should you two spread baseless rumors about why Gan Yanyu went to England or why she returned?" he demanded.

"Who are you?" the woman snapped, startled.

"Calm down," the other muttered, regaining composure. "Everyone knows Gan Yanyu went to England for further studies. Coming back so soon? Clearly, she couldn’t hack it. Besides, her music isn’t that great anyway."

"You know nothing," Lin Tian scoffed coldly.

Gan Yanyu hurriedly hid her face behind her hair and clung to Lin Tian’s arm, whispering, "Please, stop."

"Have you ever attended one of Gan Yanyu’s concerts?" Lin Tian challenged.

"I’ve seen videos online," the woman faltered, voice dropping. "But not live performances."

"Then shut up," Lin Tian shot back, causing her to nearly spill her bubble tea.

He leaned in, jabbing a finger at her. "If you haven’t seen her perform, you have no right to judge. Ignorance is forgivable, but ignorance coupled with slander makes you look foolish. People like you, pretending to be cultured while dressing up for concerts, should focus less on showing off and more on improving yourselves."
