Chapter 125: The Corpse on the River
Thin tendrils of dark red blood spread out around the body, dissolving into the water before disappearing entirely. The tattered camouflage jacket and the exposed mosaic-like flesh were enough for Wang Ping to know that this person floating in the river had no chance of survival.
"Guh... gurgle... ugh!!!"
Gu Lang, crouched by the riverbank, struggled to hold it together but couldn’t stop himself from vomiting again.
A certain honey badger recalled how someone had rinsed their mouth in this very river earlier—and even drunk quite a bit of its water. At the thought, Wang Ping suddenly felt an unsettling tickle in his throat.
It wasn’t just Gu Lang; Wang Ping had also taken a sip earlier, even remarking how the water had a pleasant aftertaste.
"The hell with that so-called aftertaste!"
Wang Ping’s mouth flooded with saliva, and he spat violently, scrambling up onto the riverbank.
"Hopefully none of those nasty things got into my wound..." Wang Ping glanced down at the spot on his chest where the bleeding had finally stopped, his furry face filled with unease.
Dead bodies carried all sorts of bacteria and viruses. Even though the river flowed with fresh water, the possibility of contamination lingered like a cloud over his mind.
Wang Ping recognized the corpse in the river—it was the same guy who hadn’t chased them into the woods earlier, the one Gu Lang had knocked out with a single knee strike outside the forest. It was easy to identify him because both Damuge and Naktu sported crew cuts, while this fellow's longer hair now floated lazily on the surface of the water.
As Wang Ping stared at the river, the lower half of the corpse’s jeans had turned a deep crimson. Who knew what kind of brutal attack the man had endured?
This time, Gu Lang really messed up. Just as he was recovering from exhaustion, another wave of nausea hit him hard. He could barely stand anymore and collapsed on the ground, alternating between staring blankly into space and rolling over to vomit.
Something about the situation didn’t sit right with Wang Ping. Watching the corpse drift downstream, a sudden thought flashed through his mind.
"This guy was attacked way back when the bear chased us. Afterward, we ran far enough to escape, but surely the current should have carried the body faster than we could walk? Why did we reach here first, only for the body to float downstream later? If he’d fallen into the water during the attack, wouldn’t the current have swept him far away by now?"
Unlike Gu Lang, Wang Ping wasn’t easily grossed out. Focusing on the inconsistency, he instinctively sat down, holding his paws together as he pondered.
"Could it be that after the bear retreated, it returned to the pool and dumped the body here?"
Out of habit, Wang Ping glanced upstream and froze. Several hundred meters away, two figures were walking along the opposite bank, heading toward them.
"Holy crap!"
Without wasting another second, Wang Ping spun around, kicked Gu Lang sharply, and bolted into the woods. Now wasn’t the time to stay put—Gu Lang’s combat effectiveness was effectively negative, making him an easy target by the riverside.
"Huh? ...What’s going on…" Gu Lang mumbled weakly, his eyes half-closed, not even bothering to look at Wang Ping.
"This freaking idiot…"
With no time to waste, Wang Ping sprinted back, grabbed Gu Lang’s ankle, and dragged him into the forest.
"Uh… hey, hey?!"
Before Gu Lang could react, he found himself being yanked mercilessly across the ground, face and hands scraping against grass and twigs like he was being beaten up.
Gu Lang instantly snapped out of his daze, sitting upright despite his weakness. Looking at the small honey badger gripping his calf, he dared not kick it away and instead asked patiently, "What’s going on?"
"Shh..."
The honey badger made a silencing gesture with its tiny paw, pointing outward.
"Is the bear back?" Gu Lang shivered, quickly flipping onto his stomach and peeking through the bushes.
The floating corpse had drifted away, leaving the river eerily empty. Just as confusion set in, faint voices drifted from the shore, accompanied by what sounded like an argument. Gu Lang recognized the voices immediately—they belonged to Damuge and Naktu.
"Damn it! Persistent bastards..."
Gu Lang cursed under his breath. Suddenly, he felt weight pressing down on his back as the honey badger climbed atop him. Assuming it was just trying to avoid getting dirty, Gu Lang dismissed it—until he felt a cool sensation against his waist. His coat was abruptly lifted from behind.
" ̄ω ̄||| What are you doing?"
Gu Lang squinted backward, feeling the damp little paws of the honey badger press against his skin through his T-shirt. His muscles tensed as another chilling touch followed—a clawed hand slipped under his shirt, lifting it slightly. A furry arm wriggled inside.
"Ohhh... hoo…”
Gu Lang rolled his eyes, breaking out in goosebumps as an unsettling noise escaped his throat.
Smack!
Wang Ping slapped him hard.
"You idiot! Stop making strange noises!"
Before Gu Lang could protest, the sound of fabric tearing echoed softly. His T-shirt was slashed open from within, and the honey badger, finding its arms too short, squeezed through the tear and disappeared under his coat. Moments later, it emerged clutching a bundle of cloth.
Feeling the rough texture of his coat brushing directly against his bare back, Gu Lang looked at the wad of fabric in Wang Ping’s grasp, utterly speechless.
Outside the woods, the approaching conversation grew louder, though it might as well have been gibberish. Ignoring it, Wang Ping perched comfortably on Gu Lang’s back, wiping his paws clean with the coat. Then, spreading the bundle of cloth, he began cutting it into strips with his claws, testing their fit against his own body.
"Let me handle it..."
A hand reached out from behind, lifting Wang Ping gently.
Gu Lang sat up, cradling the honey badger in one arm while picking up the strips of cloth scattered on the ground. Moving behind a tree, he crossed his legs and settled down.
This time, the honey badger didn’t resist, standing calmly on Gu Lang’s thigh as he wrapped bandages around the wounds on its chest and forehead.
After all, support staff existed to do exactly this kind of work.
Underneath the makeshift bandages, Gu Lang’s camouflage-patterned T-shirt gave him less of an injured look and more of a rugged, rebellious vibe.
Gu Lang wanted to pat the honey badger’s head and offer some praise, but recalling past consequences, he kept the urge to himself.
For some reason, this little guy was always hypersensitive. Even the slightest hint of ownership from Gu Lang might provoke retaliation. Yet at home, the honey badger often let Grandma lift it by the scruff of its neck to groom it. Despite looking annoyed, it never reacted aggressively.
"Tch! Such a snob!"
Cursing inwardly, Gu Lang placed the honey badger on the ground and cautiously peeked out from behind the tree. By now, the voices outside were almost upon them.
At that moment, he felt a tug on his sleeve.
Looking down, Gu Lang saw the honey badger standing beside his arm, holding something in its tiny paw—an amber bead it had picked up earlier.
"Here, hold onto this for me. I’ll take it back later. If you dare hide it, I’ll kill you!" The honey badger bared its teeth menacingly.
"Oh? Feeling generous after I helped you out?" Gu Lang’s eyes lit up, secretly delighted.
