Chapter 122: Engineering Bay and Bunker
“12.7mm, huh…” Tang Fang muttered under his breath. He wasn’t particularly worried about whether marines could penetrate the so-called Ulikemi Shield. After all, thanks to the dual acceleration of gunpowder and electromagnetic forces in the C-14 Gauss Rifle, the metal spikes fired by marines packed more punch than even 20mm heavy cannons. To them, the Earth Knight wouldn’t be much tougher than the Guardian Knight.
What troubled him was the rebels themselves. If Makanda Armory had already acquired production techniques for everything except the Ulikemi Shield, it was likely that the heavy military-industrial bases in the northwest of Odin Continent were also capable of producing these suits. Once these Earth Knights were integrated into the government army’s armored divisions, they would undoubtedly put immense pressure on the rebel forces.
If he could think of it, Montgomery surely hadn’t missed it either. Perhaps Marion had already prepared countermeasures. Comforting himself with this thought, Tang Fang sighed and turned to the guard at the door. “Would it be possible for me to make a copy of these files?”
“Of course, feel free,” replied the guard, a mole on the corner of his right lip twitching as he nodded. The data here had already been reviewed and backed up by Montgomery and his team. To the Northern Sunaru Alliance, it wasn’t classified information—and besides, Tang Fang was one of their own.
“Thank you.” Tang Fang nodded, pulling out a lead from within his powered armor and plugging it into the universal interface of the data center.
He then moved to the nearby console, searched the directory for relevant keywords, and initiated the data retrieval function. A progress bar flashed across the screen as rows of data began to load.
Just as he was about to start copying, the world dimmed around him, and a familiar voice echoed in his mind.
"Detected usable data. Initiating diagnostic program…"
"Diagnostics complete. Confirmed compatibility: Terran."
"Parsing data…"
"Engineering Level E. Research tree unlocked. Technology level 1. Buildings unlocked: 'Engineering Bay,' 'Bunker.'"
"Engineering Bay? Bunker?" Tang Fang furrowed his brow, suddenly recalling an experience from Planet 5.
Shifting his attention to the system space's Terran base, he selected the SCV unit and confirmed that the options for "Engineering Bay" and "Bunker" had indeed lit up among the basic structures.
With practiced ease, he pressed the hotkey, and the system automatically deducted 125 minerals. The SCV rotated underground momentarily before placing the Engineering Bay.
In no time, the structure was completed. Looking at the five upgrade options now available—"Infantry Weapons," "Infantry Armor," "Neosteel Frame," "Hi-Sec Auto Tracking," and "Building Armor"—Tang Fang couldn’t help but smile. Unlocking the Engineering Bay and Bunker using the government army’s new power armor data was certainly an unexpected bonus.
However, given the shortage of gas resources, upgrading infantry capabilities would have to wait. As for the bunker—well, it was essentially useless to him now. Unlike the Zerg Spine Crawlers, which could be summoned into real space, the Terran Bunker remained confined to the virtual base as nothing more than decoration.
Chuckling wryly, Tang Fang was about to withdraw his consciousness when something caught his eye. Glancing at the resource counter in the upper-right corner—41,340/2,375—he realized that minerals had increased by 11,215, and the number kept rising in increments of five.
Thinking back, the Sea Falcon Commandos alone had left over a thousand corpses behind, not to mention the fallen rebel soldiers. By the time battlefield cleanup ended, the mineral count might continue climbing indefinitely.
“I wonder how many resources I’ll end up raking in…”
Lost in thought, a notification from Berserker interrupted him—the remaining members of the Sea Falcon Commandos had reached the final stretch of the drainage pipes.
Tang Fang narrowed his eyes, his gaze turning cold. “Kill them. Leave none alive…”
At the same moment, a soft chime sounded in his ear. Glancing up, he saw that the data copy task was complete.
Unplugging the cable, he nodded farewell to the guard at the door and wandered a bit longer before returning to the rest lounge. His Marauder-powered armor lay discarded to one side, while Housen sprawled across the couch, legs propped up on the armrest, dozing off. Arroz stood by the window, exhaling smoke rings as he gazed absently at the descending night.
“Grant and the others still haven’t come up?” Tang Fang approached Arroz and asked quietly.
Before Arroz could answer, Housen sat bolt upright, cursing under his breath. “Damn it all! It’s been fifteen minutes already—are they planning to show up or not? What kind of nonsense is this Montgomery pulling? We did save his life, after all.”
“Don’t rush,” Tang Fang said calmly. “Stivie probably needs to debrief him on the battle details. As the commander of a ten-thousand-strong force, he’s bound to be busy.”
“Hmph!” Housen shot Tang Fang a sideways glance. “So commanders are untouchable now? Forget Montgomery—even if that old geezer Marion showed up treating me like dirt, I’d kick him straight to the curb.”
“How dare you!” The sharp retort didn’t come from Tang Fang but from a young man who looked strikingly similar to Beckham. Standing outside the doorway with three armed guards glaring coldly at Housen, the newcomer stepped forward, his tone dripping with disdain. “Who do you think you are?”
Faced with the hostile stares of four men, Housen smirked lazily, unimpressed. “Who am I? Listen closely—I said even if that old fool Marion—”
Housen never finished his sentence because Tang Fang intervened, stepping between them. While Montgomery’s treatment of them bordered on rudeness, dragging Marion into the argument seemed unnecessarily vindictive.
Glancing at Tang Fang, who had positioned himself protectively in front of Housen, the faux-Beckham frowned and snapped, “Are you Talosal?”
His tone carried clear resentment, yet beneath the anger, Tang Fang detected something else—a flicker of jealousy. Oddly enough, they were meeting for the first time, with no apparent conflict of interest. Why would he feel jealous?
“That’s me,” Tang Fang replied evenly.
“Follow me.” With a curt instruction, faux-Beckham turned and strode away without waiting for a response.
Tang Fang’s brow furrowed again, irritation creeping into his expression. Was this how Montgomery treated allies? Especially considering Tang Fang had just saved his life.
“Follow you? Who are you?” Housen, unable to contain himself, sprang to his feet.
The faux-Beckham paused mid-step, turning back with visible impatience. “Who am I? I’m Isaac Mario, deputy commander of the guard battalion responsible for securing the entire Northern Sunaru Alliance command system.”
Deputy commander of the guard battalion? Tang Fang frowned once more. “Was it Montgomery who sent you?” This time, his voice carried a note of dissatisfaction.
Isaac Mario avoided answering directly, instead snapping irritably, “If I tell you to follow me, you follow me. Why ask questions?”
“And what if I refuse?” Like most people, Tang Fang hated being threatened.
“Refuse?” Clearly unprepared for such defiance, Isaac hesitated for a moment, visibly flustered. Regaining composure, his youthful arrogance returned. “Fine! Arrest them! If they won’t walk willingly, we’ll drag them there.”
The three armed guards hesitated briefly before ultimately deciding to obey the order.
