Chapter 110: The Legacy of the Planeswalker (Part 1)

“What… is this?” Brandon’s voice trailed off, his face frozen in disbelief.

“As you can see, my lord,” Tiger Finch said, his lips pressed into a thin line as he adopted an air of calm mystery. Yet, his hazel eyes sparkled with barely contained excitement. “These are Fate Cards.” He opened the book, thumb and forefinger spread wide, pointing to the six cards affixed to the page as he spoke.

“I know that,” Brandon replied, his gaze locked on the tome. “But how could there be so many?”

He stared at the book. If each page held six cards, there had to be at least forty or fifty in total.

“Er…” Tiger Finch raised an eyebrow. “Perhaps it would be better if Chael himself answered that question for you, my lord.”

“Chael? You know him too?” The young man turned sharply, his brow furrowed as he studied Tiger Finch.

“Of course,” the mercenary captain replied smoothly, one hand holding the book as though it were second nature. “The creatures summoned from these cards exist within the same sub-space created by you as a Planeswalker. When we are not summoned, we live in territories sustained by land cards. The wealth and elements you expend serve as our sustenance—our ‘provisions’—to act in the material realm. Naturally, the higher the rank of the unit, the greater the cost to maintain them.”

“Hmm.” Brandon mentally noted the term ‘sub-space,’ then instinctively glanced at his remaining resources: Nature 6, Water 6, Wealth 67, Prestige 17. His pack still held a few leftover elemental crystals from his last expedition, half of which were Fire.

He shot another suspicious glance at Tiger Finch. “You don’t strike me as someone who’d say something like that.”

Tiger Finch chuckled. “My lord is perceptive. Those were Chael’s words verbatim. I am merely the messenger.”

“You can contact him?”

Brandon immediately felt foolish for asking, as the mercenary captain nodded without hesitation. “Very well,” Brandon said. “Then tell me—how is this possible? Tumen once told me that only a Planeswalker or their chosen allies can view Fate Cards. How does this fellow have so many? Is he secretly a Planeswalker, or perhaps possesses some latent potential? Or did these cards not come from the Dark Priest after all?”

“No, they were indeed found on the Dark Priest’s corpse,” Tiger Finch replied. “However, unlike ordinary Fate Cards, this is a Card Collection.”

“And what makes a Card Collection different?” Brandon interrupted.

Tiger Finch paused, as if awaiting confirmation from some unseen source. Then he looked up and continued. “Chael says that a Planeswalker’s lifespan is not infinite. When one generation of Planeswalkers reaches the end of their life, the cards they’ve collected are sealed together. In this state, the cards become physical objects, visible and touchable even to common folk. To them, these cards are indistinguishable from the divination tools used by fortune-tellers. But to another Planeswalker, they represent a priceless inheritance. There are other scenarios where a Card Collection might form, but the most common case remains the first.”

“So you’re saying the Dark Priest stumbled upon this collection but didn’t understand its purpose?”

“It’s quite possible,” Tiger Finch replied. “Though Chael also suggested your earlier hypothesis holds merit.”

Brandon shook his head. If the Dark Priest were truly a Planeswalker, wouldn’t he have used the cards against him? Chael’s explanation was likely the truth; the young man had probably been flattering him out of habit. Still, after a moment’s thought, Brandon asked, “If that’s the case, couldn’t Planeswalkers potentially plunder each other’s cards?”

“It is indeed possible,” Tiger Finch confirmed, dutifully relaying the message. “However, most battles between Planeswalkers do not end in death. Most cards lack uniqueness, and unless one is truly mad, few would resort to murder over Fate Cards.”

“What do you mean by ‘lack uniqueness’?”

“Yes, most cards are not unique. Multiple copies of the same card can exist simultaneously in different locations, even among newly formed decks. However, each card is special to the Planeswalker who wields it. For instance, you may summon Highland Squire, and I will serve you faithfully. Another Planeswalker might possess a card named Highland Squire as well, but they would not summon Chael—it might instead summon Mordain or Aivar. The rules manifest based on the summoner’s subconscious, and once established, they remain fixed.” The mercenary captain shrugged. “Which means, my lord, should you wish to summon a pleasing golden-haired, blue-eyed mercenary captain named ‘Nightingale’ to serve you next time, it simply cannot happen. Also, the first part of that explanation comes directly from Chael, while the latter is my own addition.”

“Are you mocking me for having a thing for older men?” Brandon’s eye twitched as he growled, “That addition was unnecessary. And earlier, you mentioned sealing—meaning I cannot use these cards directly.”

Tiger Finch nodded.

“And now?”

The mercenary captain handed over the black Card Collection.

“Huh?”

“Take a look.”

With some skepticism, Brandon accepted the collection. The moment his fingers brushed the first card, strange text appeared before his eyes: 1400 Prestige. He froze, focusing intently, and the text expanded:

Platinum Angel
(Immortal Alliance XIX)
Arbitrary 40, Mana 50
[Divine Artifact – Creature/Angel, Elite Level 60]

While Platinum Angel is on the field, the summoner cannot die from damage.
Upkeep Cost: While Platinum Angel is on the field, pay 10 Arbitrary, 10 Gemstones daily.
"A secret of immortality buried deep within—"
Requirement: Unlocking this card requires at least 1400 Prestige.

1400 Prestige?! Brandon nearly dropped the collection. Back when Chael was around, he’d earned 1 Prestige per day from the Highland Squire card, accumulating a mere 17 points in total. After the card entered the graveyard, even that trickle stopped. With Marsha as his witness, he couldn’t possibly gather 1400 Prestige through theft alone. Was this collection just mocking him?

He stared at the card, painted in an oil-painting style with a featureless Platinum Angel, momentarily speechless. His gaze drifted to the next card:

Elixir of Immortality
(Immortal Alliance X)
Light 10, Mana 50
[Divine Artifact – Relic]

Place horizontally and pay Light 5. Restore half your health and shuffle Elixir of Immortality and your graveyard into your deck.
"Bottled life. Not to my taste, nor fresh, but effective nonetheless." – Baron Singer
Requirement: Unlocking this card costs 2000 Wealth.

Brandon suppressed the urge to vomit blood. He had slightly more wealth than prestige, but compared to 2000, it felt insignificant. Was Tiger Finch deliberately tormenting him? These cards were undeniably powerful, but their costs were astronomical for someone of his current standing. Still, he hadn’t offended the man recently, so why go to such lengths? Suspicious, he flipped further, only to find that the earlier cards required progressively lower payments, though their quality diminished accordingly.

Lord of Holy Flame, Time Reversal, Ioana’s Judgment, Lion of Nia…

A rough estimate suggested the collection contained no fewer than forty cards, evenly split between Light and Dark, with a few red ones mixed in. There were also land cards, though their payment methods varied. Some demanded Prestige, others Wealth, and still others required a certain Planeswalker level. Brandon ignored those entirely; he remained at Level 1, and he’d noticed this system seemed disconnected from experience gains. For now, he had no idea how to advance.

Some requirements were downright bizarre: specific resources, particular land cards, even conditions tied to other classes. For example, the card Time Reversal explicitly stated that its owner needed at least Level 20 in the Wizard class to unlock it. The list went on.

Most cards, Brandon realized, were beyond his reach for the time being. But as he flipped through the pages, his eyes began to gleam. Soon enough, he discovered two pages containing ten cards he could afford: Blood Vanguard, Black Earth Lion, Hymn of Light, Roshar’s Market, Root Swamp, Eternal Ground, Voice of the Underworld, Master Kazandu, Hylar Guard, and Archangel of Sanctity. Even among these, he could only afford three after accounting for their costs.

Thus, he had to choose carefully.

First, he needed a Dark-element land card. Without hesitation, he selected Root Swamp. Paying 10 Wealth for it, he soon realized its inferiority compared to the Elven Forbidden Ground. Aside from providing 1 stray Dark element weekly, placing it horizontally yielded only 1 Dark element. Compared to the 2 Nature and 1 Water provided by the Elven Forbidden Ground, the disparity was glaring.

Still, it partially resolved the upkeep issue for Unicorn Knight, leaving only the matter of Wealth.

His second choice was Chael’s Market—a special land card that generated 2 Wealth and 1 Earth Element daily, or 6 Wealth when placed horizontally. At double the cost of a basic land card (20 Wealth), it strained his budget. After purchasing it, Brandon had just over 10 Wealth left. Technically, he could afford another basic land card, but considering the upkeep costs for keeping Metissa, the Elven Maiden, on the field, he decided against it.

For his third card, there was no question—it had to be the resurrection card he desperately needed: Archangel of Sanctity.

Archangel of Sanctity
(Immortal Alliance III)
Light 5
[Creature – Angel/Knight, Elite Level 20]

When Archangel of Sanctity enters the field, return a non-black card from your graveyard to your deck.
Upkeep Cost: While Archangel of Sanctity is on the field, pay Light 1 daily.
"Merciful light descends from the heavens; the divine emissary emerges from the radiance—"

Unlocking this card required 10 Prestige, sparing Brandon’s already depleted treasury. However, he was momentarily embarrassed to realize he lacked both Light-element land cards and Light-element crystals. Summoning Chael or Wind Spirit Spider from the graveyard remained an unattainable dream. All he could do was give Tiger Finch a firm pat on the shoulder and instruct him to relay a message to Chael: that he would do everything in his power to summon him again as soon as possible. Until then, he needed Chael to remain patient a little while longer.

Then another thought struck him. Hadn’t Tiger Finch once insisted that only Dark-element cards could retrieve units from the graveyard? He eyed the mercenary captain skeptically. After a long pause, the seasoned warrior admitted sheepishly that he’d been guessing blindly back then.

Brandon almost burst into tears.
