Chapter 8: A Glimmer of Hope in Desperation (Part 2)
The entire hall was now swarming with vampires, their shrill cries echoing as they lunged toward us. On average, each of us faced about five opponents of roughly equal strength. If our gear had been even slightly inferior, we’d already be lying dead on the ground. Even Long Triangle and Longbow Sunshot, who were wielding two newly acquired top-tier weapons, couldn’t turn the tide against the overwhelming odds. It seemed inevitable that we’d all fall here.
“Come here, hurry up! Over here—quick!” Clado shouted from a corner to our right, frantically swinging his weapon at the encircling vampires while flailing his arms like a madman.
“Quick, everyone, get over to him!” I was just wondering if the tauren shaman was performing some bizarre ritual to prepare his soul for the afterlife when Long Triangle pointed toward him and translated loudly, snapping me out of my confusion.
Black Aurora was the first to make it over. He employed his signature hybrid spellcasting technique, combining a standard fire shield with Gust Strike, creating a whirling wall of protective flames around himself. The barrier not only offered him superior protection but also inflicted severe burns on any vampire foolish enough to approach. Naturally wary of fire, the vampires gave him a wide berth, allowing him to move freely.
Long Triangle’s escape was even smoother. Mid-battle, he suddenly hurled a vial of refractive potion onto the ground. In a shimmering cascade of light, he vanished from sight. The vampires surrounding him immediately lost track of their target, growling in frustration as they scanned the area in vain.
Longbow Sunshot, however, wasn’t so lucky.
As always, our dwarven priest had charged headfirst into the thickest knot of enemies, wielding his twin-section staff with reckless abandon. His short arms moved in a blur, chanting what sounded suspiciously like “Hunh-ha-hee” under his breath as he unleashed a flurry of magical spheres that crackled with energy.
At first, his ferocity dealt significant damage. Several vampire knights reeled under his relentless assault, unable to counterattack. But soon, he found himself surrounded by a tight circle of foes. Though protected by his magic, he couldn’t hold out forever. His mana reserves teetered precariously on the edge of depletion, and if he hadn’t been chugging mana potions like water, the ravenous vampires would have drained him dry long ago.
But despite the danger, Longbow Sunshot showed no signs of fear—or even common sense. Quite the opposite; he seemed positively thrilled.
Perhaps it was due to the height difference between him and the vampires—they towered over him, their chests level with his face—but whatever the reason, the scantily clad female vampires’ revealing outfits left little to the imagination. Their cleavage, deep enough to rival the Grand Canyon, loomed tantalizingly before his broad nose. Whether this triggered some perverse condition or simply excited him beyond reason, a stream of blood spurted from his nostrils. Oddly enough, his health didn’t seem to suffer for it.
“Longbow Sunshot, can you break free?” I called out as I dodged an attack from behind.
“If I could, I wouldn’t,” he replied without hesitation. “This is paradise! Wow, look at these beauties—32D? No, wait, 32E! Guys, don’t worry about me. Let me die happily crushed beneath these vampire sisters’ voluptuous bosoms…”
His voice carried over the chaos, lewd and unapologetic, competing with the vampires’ screeches for sheer audacity.
His response confirmed one thing: he wasn’t getting out on his own. Spotting a nearly depleted female vampire among those surrounding him, I slashed her down from behind, creating a gap in the circle.
Inside the ring, I found Longbow Sunshot completely abandoning defense, his eyes half-closed in bliss as he reached out toward my chest with a lecherous grin.
“Move it!” I grabbed him by the belt and hauled him toward Clado’s position.
“Jeff? What are you doing here?” His hands brushed against the armor plating on my chest, and his eyes snapped open in shock. “What did you do to my vampire sisters?! Do you have any idea how rare this opportunity is? My warm, welcoming embrace of death—ruined! You absolute fiend! Give me back my dreamy, blossoming bosom paradise…”
It boggled the mind how someone so depraved—a walking amalgamation of filth, perversion, and bloodlust—had somehow earned the approval of the supreme god Darmos to become a holy priest spreading divine teachings. Had he signed up during one of Darmos’s hormonal mood swings? Not that I meant to slander the almighty deity—if He truly was omnipotent, surely He could experience things like mood swings too.
By the time I dragged Longbow Sunshot to the corner where Clado stood, the tauren shaman had already planted various totems restoring health and mana. Under their influence, a cool sensation washed over me, wounds began to heal, and my vitality slowly climbed back up.
The vampires weren’t far behind, closing in once more as we resumed the fight.
Though cornered, we actually gained a tactical advantage. The Death God’s Hall was vast and open, leaving us nowhere to retreat. Worse still, the vampires could use ranged magical attacks, making guerrilla tactics impossible.
But tucked into the corner, the walls shielded us from attacks from behind and the sides. Now we only needed to focus on the enemies in front of us. Moreover, only Long Triangle and I bore the brunt of the vampires’ assault. Black Aurora, the elven mage, stayed safely behind us, conserving his mana for spells instead of wasting it on defensive shields. Meanwhile, the tauren shaman and dwarven priest alternated between dealing damage and casting healing spells, ensuring our defenses held firm. Though victory remained a distant hope, we’d bought ourselves precious time.
“What now?” My shield clanged loudly as vampires pressed closer, and I turned to Long Triangle anxiously.
“What else can we do? Take it step by step and improvise. Worst case, we all die and respawn.” Forced by circumstances to abandon stealth and assassination, Long Triangle fought openly despite his thin armor, relying heavily on Longbow Sunshot’s healing.
“If we’re going to die anyway, couldn’t you at least let me cop a feel before I go? Such cruelty, dragging me to this corner instead…” Long Triangle muttered, casually tossing a healing wave at Longbow Sunshot.
“Shut up!” Both Long Triangle and I snapped simultaneously.
“Hold on a bit longer—I’ve got an idea, but it’ll take some time…” (in Shanghainese) Black Aurora suddenly piped up from the rear, interrupting our bickering. Without waiting for a response, he began chanting a lengthy incantation.
“What’s he saying?” Long Triangle grimaced as a blow landed squarely on his shoulder.
“Who knows? Probably something sappy like, ‘I’m honored to know you, dying together is glorious, see you in the next life,’” I said skeptically.
“That cheesy?” Long Triangle raised an eyebrow.
“Or maybe he’s cursing us, calling us bad luck and vowing revenge in the underworld,” Longbow Sunshot chimed in, switching gears faster than anyone thought possible.
“You’re useless as a translator,” Long Triangle sighed, giving up.
No one knew what Black Aurora was planning, but ever since his cryptic announcement, he’d been chanting nonstop. The spell stretched on endlessly, like the River Morningstar flowing eternally onward. The only thing I’d ever encountered comparable to its length was the absurdly long name of my good friend Millionfold, the tauren warrior. By the time Long Triangle and I were running dangerously low on health, and Clado and Longbow Sunshot struggled to keep pace with our losses, Black Aurora was still mumbling away.
“I think I know what he’s doing…” Long Triangle groaned despairingly. “…He’s singing a lullaby. An infinite loop of one. I’m falling asleep…”
Just then, Black Aurora finally made progress. His chanting stopped abruptly, and with a dramatic gesture, a miniature volcano erupted amidst the vampires. But he wasn’t done yet. True to form, he gulped down another mana potion, barely refilling his depleted reserves, and cast Gust Strike on the volcano. A spiraling vortex formed above the crater, growing larger and larger…
