Chapter 90: A Rapid Crash

Is it always better to keep trying, no matter how futile the effort seems, than to give up entirely?

After hearing the policewoman’s simple yet resolute words, Leon couldn’t help but activate the black goat’s soul vision to examine her soul.

Her bright white spirit shimmered with a slight restlessness, its glow just a touch too sharp for comfort. Yet, it burned steadfastly, pulsing with an intense and unwavering energy—like a small flame freshly kindled, struggling to warm the tiny corner of the world around it with its tender light.

But alas, what lay closest to her now wasn’t a fragile soul yearning for warmth—it was a raging inferno of cold fury, desperate for release.

---

This person… she will surely become an obstacle in our path one day. Though the thought felt absurd even as it crossed her mind, the female prisoner couldn’t shake the conviction that rose within her as she stared into the policewoman’s determined eyes.

Human nature craves stability and excels at self-deception. No matter how painful life may seem, most people cling to hope if there’s any glimmer of it left—they won’t risk change unless forced to.

Only those who have been pushed to the brink, who’ve tasted the bitterest depths of despair, are capable of throwing caution to the wind and vowing revenge on everything that has wronged them. And so…

You’re a good cop, but you’re still our enemy. As earnest promises like “Please believe me once more” and “I’ll get to the bottom of this” rang in her ears, the prisoner’s gaze didn’t soften—it sharpened instead, hardening into something colder and deadlier.

As the leader had said, the arrival of the “new world” everyone longs for isn’t dictated by us; it depends on how quickly the rot spreads through the kingdom.

Only by tearing open the festering wounds of this nation, by stoking the flames of decay until everyone is forced to confront its putrid core, can we shatter the false hopes of those content with the status quo and compel them to rise up with us against it.

Whether it’s the reform-minded princess, the defense minister clinging desperately to his crumbling military power—or even you, whose ties to him run deep—all must be removed from the board.

---

Ahaha~ Leon, take a look at this.

The transformation in the prisoner’s soul hadn’t escaped the black goat, a Greater Demon attuned to such shifts.

Watching as her essence darkened from crimson to murky shadows, feeling the murderous intent dancing alongside the flickering embers of her resolve, the black goat closed its eyes in blissful admiration, wearing an expression of pure delight.

One refuses to condone the other’s actions yet strives desperately to save her. The other acknowledges the goodness in the former but prepares herself to kill without hesitation.

How wonderful! To commit atrocities without restraint in pursuit of some grand ideal—such filthy, sticky souls are truly exquisite.

And as for the other… when her sincere goodwill meets nothing but venomous malice, what vile thoughts might blossom in her heart?

Ahhaha. It’s beautiful. I can’t wait to see her reaction.

“…”

Seriously, why does a Greater Demon talk like they’re stuck in their edgy teenage years? Leon pressed down harder on the goat’s head, grinding it slightly against the grimy floor of the carriage, eliciting a string of curses before silently gripping the Sacred Spirit Pendant, ready to intervene.

If it were someone from the Lion family being targeted, he might have let things slide—or perhaps delayed his rescue intentionally. But based on the conversation he’d overheard, though the policewoman was stubborn and troublesome, she wasn’t inherently bad. If saving her was possible, then it was worth doing.

He watched the rebel carefully. The moment darkness surged in her soul and she reached for the policewoman’s throat, Leon activated the pendant, summoning an invisible hand that slammed down on the bandages wrapped around the prisoner’s wrist.

“What?!”

A searing pain shot through her wrist. The bandage, which should have floated free, was pinned down by an unseen force, startling the prisoner.

But the policewoman reacted instantly, shifting her body to meet the attacking hand with her shoulder. With her other hand, she struck forcefully below the prisoner’s ulnar styloid process, numbing her arm.

Seizing the brief window where the prisoner’s elbow and wrist were immobilized, the policewoman twisted her opponent’s right wrist, locking it into a reverse joint hold that neutralized her ability to fight back.

Finally, shifting her weight downward, she executed a wrist lock combined with a shoulder throw, slamming the prisoner onto the carriage floor with enough force to rattle the entire vehicle.

Though the sequence sounded complex, the policewoman performed it with breathtaking fluidity. By the time Leon shrugged off the coat covering his head, she’d already dragged the prisoner off the seat and subdued her cleanly.

“…”

Wow… So you’ve got moves like that, huh?

Leon stared in astonishment at the policewoman, who now knelt with her knee pressing into the prisoner’s lower back while twisting her right arm behind her, pinning her firmly to the floor. A flicker of relief passed through his eyes.

Good thing I’m not easily provoked, or I might’ve ended up fighting her earlier—and judging by my combat skills, I doubt I’d fare much better than this prisoner.

In less than 0.2 seconds after regaining control of the situation, the policewoman instinctively scanned her surroundings, checking for potential accomplices hidden among the passengers. Then—

“You?”

“I was passing through.”

As Leon plopped back onto his seat, avoiding the policewoman’s impending lunge, he noticed the whirlwind of emotions crossing her face—shock, hesitation, panic, determination—all swirling together like spilled spices in a kitchen accident.

“I’m on duty too,” he added quickly, emphasizing his position. “And I boarded before you did.”

Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out his badge and flashed it toward the ticket collector—a stout woman charging toward them, mouth open wide to unleash a tirade.

“We’re transporting a suspect. Your cooperation is appreciated.”

“So what if you are ‘police’? I’m a Level Two Conductor for the Department of Public Works!”

“Secret Investigations Bureau.”

“Secr—oh. Never mind…”

At the sight of the gleaming Police Department insignia on the badge cover, the ticket collector’s neck retracted involuntarily. When she spotted the subdued prisoner lying face-down on the floor in a submission hold, her anger evaporated completely.

Under the bewildered stares of the other passengers, her stout figure pivoted gracefully, her bowed legs turning like compass points. She scurried back to her post in the front row, plopping down heavily onto her seat.

Meanwhile, the prisoner, half her face pressed against the floor, caught sight of Leon out of the corner of her eye—and suddenly, everything clicked into place.

“You!”
