Chapter 82: What Kind of Help Did He Offer?
With a sliver of hope that he might slip in unnoticed, Leon found himself standing once again at the entrance of Happiness Residence.
After glancing up toward his sixth-floor apartment, he took a deep breath, clutching the Sacred Spirit Pendant hanging around his neck tightly. Then, as quietly as possible, he tiptoed into the building’s lobby.
But something was off. Either everyone had already turned in for the night, or the effects of his pendant were masking his presence—whatever it was, Leon made it through the lobby and into the stairwell without encountering the burly old man with the shears or even the ever-watchful building manager.
So… could I really just walk right back home?
Overjoyed by this unexpected stroke of luck, Leon quickened his pace, bounding up the stairs three at a time. As he raised his hand to knock on the door, it swung open before he could touch it—just like countless times over the past three years.
“Brother?”
Anna stood there, her face lighting up with curiosity when she saw Leon's cheerful expression.
“Aren’t you supposed to be busy these days? Didn’t you say you weren’t coming back tonight?”
“Well,” Leon replied, scratching the back of his head sheepishly, “I was busy, but then suddenly... not so much. So here I am.” He paused, looking around. “Oh, and I haven’t eaten dinner yet. Is there anything left—uh…”
His voice trailed off as his eyes landed on the imposing figure seated at the dining table, glaring daggers at him.
Wait… Is he lying in wait for me?
“Brother,” Anna interjected smoothly, sensing Leon’s discomfort, “you didn’t have time to help us move our stuff earlier, so Uncle John stepped in and carried everything upstairs. And while I was tidying up this afternoon, William and Melanie were under his care too—he even helped put them to bed just now.”
Noticing how Leon couldn’t seem to tear his gaze away from the stern-faced elder, Anna added with a smile, “Uncle John has done so much for us, but he refused to accept any payment. I didn’t know how else to thank him, so I invited him over for dinner. It seemed like the least we could do.”
“…”
So… you actually let the wolf into the house on purpose?
Leon opened his mouth to respond but promptly closed it again, unsure of what to say. After flexing his stiff facial muscles, he forced out an awkward grin.
“Well, we definitely need to show our gratitude. Uh… heh. Mr. John, how’s the food treating you?”
“It’s good.”
The older man’s reply came curtly, followed by a strained smile that looked more menacing than friendly. Then, without warning, he abruptly stood up and reached for the basket containing his oversized pair of shears.
Oh no.
Just as Leon tensed, ready to bolt out the door, a sharp cough echoed behind him.
“Ahem…”
Huh?
Is this… a pincer attack?
Spinning around, Leon froze mid-motion upon seeing the familiar face of the building manager. His heart skipped a beat, and he instinctively grabbed hold of the Sacred Spirit Pendant, bracing himself for whatever might come next.
But instead of attacking, the manager simply lifted a large platter in her hands, holding out a perfectly roasted beef roll with crispy golden skin.
“Young man~ hungry, aren’t you? Want one?”
“Uh… sure, I guess… though I’m not starving…”
“If you’re not in a rush, then step aside and let me pass first… hehe, this thing’s pretty hot.”
“Oh, okay…”
Completely baffled, Leon shuffled out of the way to let the manager pass. As the rich aroma of the meal lingered in the air and the burly old man continued toying with his massive shears across the room, Leon felt utterly confused.
Am I allowed in or not? Why are you two sending mixed signals?
…
“Brother?”
Seeing Leon lingering hesitantly at the doorway, Anna blinked in confusion before walking over and pulling him inside.
“You haven’t eaten yet, have you? Come sit down and eat!”
“Uh… alright.”
Circling halfway around the long table, Leon chose the seat farthest from the intimidating elder. Under the weight of the man’s piercing stare, Leon picked up his cutlery and reluctantly sliced into a piece of meat, forcing himself to chew mechanically despite having no appetite.
After observing his discomfort for a moment, Anna leaned over and playfully pinched his thigh.
“I thought you told me Uncle John may look scary, but he’s actually a kind-hearted person. Why are you acting so tense?”
“…”
It’s not tension—it’s self-preservation! I’m worried he’ll decide I don’t look trustworthy enough and lunge at me with those shears!
“Hehe, men are all the same.”
The white-haired manager chuckled softly, offering a gentle smile as she tried to ease the tension.
“My husband’s the same way. You know, he actually mentioned your brother earlier, saying he works at the Police Department but seems like a decent guy. He hopes they can get along better moving forward…” She shot a pointed glare at the burly man. “Put that down! Why are you always fiddling with that stupid shears?”
With a swift flick of her wrist, she smacked his hand and snatched the gleaming tool away, then hauled the heavy basket farther out of reach. Turning to her now flustered husband, who stared at her longingly, she barked, “Go wash your hands! Your shears are covered in dirt. How do you expect to eat after touching that?”
“Oh…”
Chastised, the burly man’s broad shoulders sagged slightly, and he trudged toward the bathroom, casting reluctant glances back every few steps.
Phew… looks like the wife wears the pants in this household. That means I should be safe…
Watching the pitiful sight of the big man heading off to scrub his hands, Leon exhaled deeply, his stiff smile finally softening. Grateful for the intervention, he gave the manager a sincere thumbs-up.
You’ve got him well-trained, ma’am.
“No, no, it’s nothing like that!” The manager waved dismissively, chuckling. “It’s all because my husband lets me take charge.”
She tilted her head curiously. “Enough about me, though. Anna tells me you work at the Cleansing Bureau within the Police Department. What exactly does your department do?”
“Well…” Leon hesitated, glancing at Anna, whose eyes sparkled with curiosity. Clearing his throat, he offered a diplomatic response. “Mostly handling difficult situations, providing support where needed…”
“As for specifics,” he added cautiously, “some details aren’t exactly dinner conversation material… Maybe we could talk about something else? Like, uh, Mr. John’s hobbies?”
Leon faltered mid-sentence, prompting the manager to follow his gaze toward the bathroom. To her immense frustration, she spotted her husband washing one hand while miming shears with the other, silently mouthing “snip-snip” in Leon’s direction through the glass.
“Finish washing your hands properly!”
Snapping at him again, the manager turned back to Leon with an apologetic nod. “You’ll have to excuse him. Unlike me, whose role involves preventing accidents, my husband handles… well… the more confrontational side of things. I think you understand what I mean?”
“Yeah, yeah, I get it.”
Leon nodded knowingly, piecing together the dynamic between the couple. Happiness Residence boasted two abilities: Accident Avoidance and Evil Entity Extermination. Clearly, they divided responsibilities—one focused on prevention, the other on eradication. No wonder the burly man kept eyeing him suspiciously.
“Hehe, glad you understand.”
Having subtly explained their situation, the manager glanced at Anna, who still looked thoroughly perplexed, and continued warmly, “Young man, the Cleansing Bureau sounds like a noble line of work. Though I don’t know much about it, I’ve encountered some of your colleagues before. In fact, my husband and I owe our current lives to the help of your bureau…”
Her words hung in the air, hinting at untold stories.
