Chapter 75: Drawing from Many Sources and Losing Control

No matter what happens, I am still your younger sister?

As Leon rested peacefully on her shoulder, his breathing growing softer, seemingly asleep, Anna bit her lip until it turned pale. Despite the promise she had received, her heart was far from at ease.

But what if... I'm not really your sister? What if all this happiness I have now is stolen? Once you discover everything I've done to you, will you still feel the same way as you do now?

...

Amidst the frail girl's fear and unease, the carriage carrying their family of four raced through the streets of the capital. Leon, who had only dozed off for less than thirty minutes, was woken by the whistle of the arriving carriage.

Can a carriage really move this fast?

Rubbing his sleepy eyes and stifling another yawn, Leon first smoothed out the creases on Anna's shoulder where he had leaned. Then, with a light slap on each of his younger siblings' bottoms, who were sound asleep on the opposite seat, he said:

"Wake up. We're home."

"Home?"

Upon hearing Leon's voice, William rubbed his eyes and sat up. Mimicking Leon, he carefully straightened his rumpled clothes before mercilessly poking his sister in the ribs.

"Get up. We're here."

"Don't bother me..."

Melanie groaned, her little feet clad in leather shoes kicking aimlessly in the air. Like a caterpillar, she wriggled away from William along the seat, leaving behind a trail of drool over ten centimeters long.

"Let me sleep a little longer..."

"Ew... Disgusting."

With a grimace, William grabbed Melanie's arm and wiped the drool off the seat with her sleeve. He then patted her face and said:

"Wake up. Our new place is on the sixth floor. How are you going to get up there if you don't wake up?"

"Mmm... Stop it..."

Pouting, Melanie crawled up from the seat. Catching sight of Leon’s helpless expression across from her, her eyes lit up, and she stretched out her arms toward him.

"I’ll sleep in big brother’s arms. Big brother can carry me upstairs."

"Nope, sorry. I really can’t carry you up today."

"What? Why not..."

"Because big brother has to work to support the family so we can buy you those pretty little dresses, silly~"

After playfully pinching his sister's cheek, Leon helped her and William down from the carriage. Turning toward Happiness Residence, Leon spotted a certain "frail" old man, muscular and wielding a meter-long pair of gardening shears, glaring at him from the small garden in front of the building. The man snipped away at bushes as thick as bowls with the casual ease of cutting scallions.

Stop trimming already! Fine, I won’t come near, okay?

Leon glanced at the bulging muscles beneath the old man’s thin undershirt, then at his own thighs, which were thinner than the man’s forearms. Terrified of being mistaken for someone else—or worse—Leon wasted no time. With great effort, he hauled the luggage from the carriage to the apartment entrance before beating a hasty retreat.

Seeing that the "demon brat" had the sense not to approach, the burly old man grunted, jammed the gardening shears into the ground, and limped over to inspect the new residents of Happiness Residence.

"Thank you for your trouble, Mr. John."

Anna, who had visited Happiness Residence twice before, was already familiar with the intimidating manager. After politely greeting him, she picked up as much luggage as she could carry and instructed her siblings to help as well. With an apologetic smile, she explained:

"My brother is very busy with work, so he couldn’t help us move. Could you possibly... Ah!"

To Anna's astonishment, the bear-like manager grinned ferociously, then proceeded to juggle six or seven large bags into the air before catching them all squarely on his shoulders. After adjusting their weight to stabilize the nearly 300 pounds of luggage, he snatched the remaining bags from Anna’s hands without hesitation, slung them onto his back, and strode off without a word.

"Mr. John?!"

Realizing what had just happened, Anna quickly pulled her siblings along to catch up. She wanted to help carry something, but seeing the mountain of luggage piled high on the old man’s back, she didn’t know where to start. All she could do was follow behind, repeatedly thanking him.

Phew... Looks like everything’s fine now.

Seeing that Anna and the others had been accepted by Happiness Residence, Leon, hiding around the corner, finally relaxed completely. Furrowing his brow, he hurried toward the Cleansing Bureau.

Just six hundred more live rounds to go before my Marksman badge advances to the next level. But before that, I need to visit the chief and use her connections to investigate Anna’s situation. What’s worrying her?

What? I promised her half an hour ago that I wouldn’t ask about anything she didn’t want to share?

True, I said I wouldn’t ask—but I never said I wouldn’t investigate. As the chief would put it, not asking and investigating are two separate matters entirely.

Or, as Emma might say, never rely on wishful thinking. Only by gathering enough intelligence beforehand can you ensure you’re always prepared.

If Anna’s secret is harmless, then I’ll pretend I never knew. But if it’s something dangerous, should I really wait until she does something reckless to find out?

...

With the prudence he’d learned from Emma and the shamelessness he’d picked up from the red-haired chief, Leon arrived early at the Cleansing Bureau. He knocked firmly on the chief’s office door.

"Chief, are you in?"

Perhaps he’d come too early; the sun hadn’t even fully risen yet. Whether the red-haired chief was still asleep or simply hadn’t shown up for work, there was no response.

After waiting a moment with no reply, Leon knocked again, raising his voice slightly:

"Chief, it’s Leon. Are you in?"

"I’m here."

Leon’s louder knock seemed to have worked. The red-haired chief finally responded, though her voice didn’t come from inside the office—it seemed to echo down through the floorboards.

"Chief? Are you upstairs?"

"Yes, I’m upstairs."

Her tone was calm, almost indifferent. After a brief pause, her voice grew muffled as she added:

"Do you need me? If so, come up."

Upstairs?

At her words, Leon hesitated instinctively, sensing something wasn’t quite right.

Though there was no rule against going upstairs in the Sixth Cleansing Bureau, based on his observations, no one ever went up there. The stairwell was spotless, not a single footprint to be found, and covered in a thick layer of dust. It must have been at least half a year since anyone set foot up there.

Why is the chief suddenly calling me upstairs today? And didn’t she mention once that the upstairs is filled with her anomalies?

Though her tone at the time made it sound like she was joking, when she’d casually described the bureau’s work to him before, Leon later confirmed with Emma that everything she’d said—though rare—was indeed true. So...

Could it be real this time? Is the person speaking to me right now actually one of the chief’s anomalies?
