Chapter 73: Burned

"Everything’s already packed and stacked in your room. We can move it all over tomorrow."

Though Anna had clearly noticed Leon was trying to change the subject, she didn’t call him out on it. With a faint smile, she simply nodded and helped him into the house.

Oddly enough, instead of guiding her "injured" brother to a chair, Anna led him straight to the small bed in the second bedroom. She then stacked up some pillows and blankets, arranging them into a perfect cushion for lying face down.

"..."

I knew I couldn’t fool you…

Leon had initially wanted to maintain some semblance of elder-brother dignity and keep his sore backside a secret from his sister. But since Anna had already made her intentions clear through her actions, there was no point pretending anymore. With a grimace, he obediently flopped down onto the makeshift bed.

As Leon shifted, the rough fabric of his pants scraped against his tender skin, sending a sharp jolt of pain through him.

"Hiss…"

That lunatic might have been off her rocker, but damn if she didn’t pack a punch. Especially that one slap—it landed on the meatiest part of his body, sure, but still… holy crap.

Leon, who had been resting face-down, felt a sudden rush of cold air as his pants were tugged down slightly, exposing part of his rear end to the chilly atmosphere.

"Oh dear… It's all swollen."

Anna’s initial amusement at seeing her brother’s red and puffy behind quickly turned into a flicker of concern.

"Lie still. I’ll go grab the ointment."

"Wait!"

Hurriedly pulling his pants back up, Leon winced as he pushed himself upright. He gave an awkward smile. "I can handle this myself, really."

"You just lie back down," Anna shot him a look, rolling her eyes at his stubbornness while rummaging through the packed luggage. Her tone carried a mix of exasperation and affection.

"I’m your sister, Leon. Helping you with medicine isn’t something to be embarrassed about. Remember those months when you were bedridden with a high fever? Who took care of you then? Wasn’t it me?"

She paused briefly before continuing, ticking off examples on her fingers. "Changing bandages, trimming your nails, feeding you water and food, brushing your hair, turning you over for sponge baths—even helping you to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Need I go on?"

"Okay, okay! Stop!"

Seeing his sister launch into one of her rare chatterbox modes, recounting memories both heartwarming and humiliating, Leon hastily dropped back onto the bed without another word. To make things easier, he even loosened his belt a bit more.

Satisfied by his surrender, Anna chuckled softly and stopped lecturing. After finding the ointment, she sat down beside him, gently tugging his pants down again to fully expose the injured area.

Hmm?

Upon spotting the distinct handprint on Leon’s behind, the frail-looking girl blinked in surprise. She extended her own hand, holding it a few inches away from the mark to compare sizes.

This size… if ignoring the swelling… could it belong to a woman’s hand?

Liar. And here he told me it was from combat training?

Glaring at her oblivious brother sprawled across the bed, Anna bit her lip in frustration. Then, without hesitation, she squeezed a dollop of ointment into her palm, rubbed it between her hands, and pressed firmly onto the center of the handprint.

What kind of combat training leaves a woman’s handprint on someone’s butt?

"Ow!"

Instead of the gentle application Leon had imagined, Anna’s touch felt more like a tiger cub swatting its prey. Caught off guard, he yelped in pain and was about to complain when Anna suddenly spoke up, her voice laced with mock concern.

"Oh no! Did I press too hard, elder brother? Does it hurt?"

"It’s… it’s fine…" Leon muttered unconvincingly.

"If it’s fine, then…"

Anna narrowed her eyes slightly, giving Leon’s behind a disapproving glance. Without warning, she raised her slender hand and delivered another firm slap right onto the same spot.

"Just bear with it a little longer. Rubbing it will help reduce the swelling faster."

...

After what felt like an eternity of soothing words paired with less-than-gentle treatment, Anna dabbed at the beads of sweat forming on Leon’s forehead with her sleeve. Her expression softened as she asked, genuinely concerned, "You said it didn’t hurt, so why are you sweating so much?"

"It’s probably just hot in here…" Leon mumbled lamely, not even believing his own excuse.

Looking at his sister’s seemingly innocent face, Leon sighed inwardly. While his posterior did feel significantly better, the ordeal left him drained—and confused. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t quite right.

Did I upset her somehow?

Was it because I came home late after promising to help her pack? Or maybe because I got hurt again so soon after leaving the hospital? Or perhaps…

"So it’s the heat, huh? That’s good to hear~"

After studying Leon’s suspicious expression for a moment, Anna mentally huffed. She sealed the ointment jar and turned to tidy up the scattered belongings. As she wrapped the jar in a towel and tucked it into a pile of folded clothes, something wrapped in old fabric trembled slightly within the luggage—and then popped out, landing with a soft thud near Leon’s hand.

"Hmm?"

Curious, Leon glanced over to see what had bumped his hand. It was the old family photo album—the very one he and Anna had flipped through together not long ago.

Though tempted to finish looking at the pictures they hadn’t gotten around to last time, Leon hesitated. He worried that opening the album might stir up painful memories for Anna. Shaking his head, he resisted the urge and handed the photo album back without glancing inside.

"Anna, it fell out."

"Huh? Oh, thanks."

Relieved that Leon hadn’t opened the album, Anna let out a shaky breath. Her hands trembled as she reached for it, gripping the edges tightly until her knuckles turned white. Despite her efforts, however, a faded photograph slipped out from the brittle pages and slid directly into Leon’s line of sight.

This is… a picture of Anna with Mom and Dad?

Leon studied the image: his parents stood side by side, smiling warmly at the camera, each holding one of Anna’s hands. The young Anna in the photo beamed happily at the lens. A corner of Leon’s mouth twitched upward as he prepared to pick up the photo and return it—but then he noticed something odd.

Above their heads hung a sign reading “Family Portrait,” indicating this was taken at a professional studio. Yet the photo included only their parents and Anna—no sign of Leon or their other siblings.

I clearly burned it. I know I did.

Watching Leon stare intently at the photo, Anna clenched her teeth, her face pale. She dug her nails into her thigh, using the sharp sting to steady herself. Once she regained composure, a faint blush returned to her cheeks. Sitting close to Leon, she angled her body so he couldn’t see her expression. Bending down, she picked up the photo, her voice tinged with regret.

"Oh dear, looks like the adhesive has dried out over time. After we finish moving tomorrow, I’ll buy some glue and see if I can stick it back in."
