Chapter 70: The Allure Focus and Evidence

"It’s my fault."

After inspecting the Witch’s Broom on the table and realizing it was temporarily unusable, the red-haired chief rubbed her temples as she turned to Leon with an earnest expression. "I forgot to consider your situation. The previous owner of this broom was wealthy—and a total cat enthusiast. She spared no expense when it came to her pet. Though she told me ordinary care would suffice, her idea of 'ordinary' is far beyond what most people can manage… Hmm… But don’t worry too much."

She fiddled with the broom, confirming that while it couldn’t be "activated" for now, it hadn’t lost its "anomalous" properties. Smiling reassuringly, she added, "Leo Bureau has been in contact with the witch. I’ll ask them to explain things on your behalf. Even if the witch isn’t available right away, as long as you keep the broom, everything should work out. According to the contract, the cat will come next Friday. Just make sure to treat her well this time—no more using your washbasin as her litter box—and the broom should return to normal."

Leon frowned after hearing this. He had enough on his plate already. "So… at the latest, I might have to wait a week?"

"At worst, a week; at best, maybe two or three days. It depends on when the witch finishes her match."

The chief grinned, giving an uncertain timeline. "If it takes a week, so be it. No rush infiltrating the Lion family. That dead goat’s heart won’t go anywhere anytime soon. Besides, aren’t you planning to move? You’ll have plenty to deal with then, so use this time to pack up and handle some loose ends."

That made sense.

Thinking about the bronze-tiered shooting badge still stuck in limbo and the unpacked boxes at home, Leon nodded in agreement. Then, hesitating slightly, he asked, "Um… Emma once told me that the deeper your understanding of anomalies, and the more anomalous objects you interact with, the more likely you are to attract new ones. While Happiness Residence is harmless and even protects its residents, it’s still considered an anomalous object, right? If my entire family moves in…"

"Don’t worry, they won’t attract any anomalies," the red-haired chief interrupted, waving dismissively.

"The process begins with 'awareness.' They’re completely unaware of the existence of anomalous objects. They neither know they’re living in one nor comprehend how anomalies function. As far as the anomalies are concerned, they’re still ordinary people. The only thing you need to watch out for is not using anomalous objects around them. Once they move into Happiness Residence, the Bureau’s Brain of the Evil God won’t tamper with their memories anymore."

"I understand."

With that assurance, Leon felt fully reassured. Nodding, he picked up the broom, ready to leave—but the chief called him back.

"Hold on. Take a look at this."

Newspapers? Had something anomalous happened and made headlines?

Seeing the stack of newspapers handed over by the red-haired chief, Leon tensed immediately, slipping into Worker mode. His eyes scanned the pages intently.

Winter Romance Matchmaking Event: Find Your Perfect Someone!

"…?"

"Wrong. Not The Allure Focus. Look at the next one."

Snatching back the marked newspaper, the red-haired chief coughed awkwardly to cover her embarrassment before pulling out The Sun. Pointing to the front-page headline dominating the entire spread, she nudged her chin toward it. "Here. Someone leaked the Waterworks Company scandal. It hit the news just this morning."

Hmm? Someone else was keeping tabs on the Waterworks Company besides me?

Hearing that the story had broken, Leon felt a flicker of satisfaction. Though Char Department Store had already compensated the patients languishing in hospitals, achieving the primary goal of exposing the truth, seeing those despicable nobles embroiled in trouble remained deeply gratifying. Still… this headline…

Was the 'Sewage' Incident Intentional? Thomas Lion: Evidence Fabricated.

Thomas… wasn’t that the name of the golden-haired middle-aged man from the Lion family? So the Waterworks Company leak hadn’t reached a definitive conclusion yet?

Finishing the lukewarm headline, Leon furrowed his brow, sighing inwardly. If only he hadn’t lost the evidence…

After beating the editor-in-chief of Daily Digest, Leon had planned to visit the Char Department Store to hand over proof that the sewage incident was deliberate. But fate intervened—he ran into that blasted toad just as he was leaving the shopping plaza. With one hand gripping a goat’s head and the other holding the broom, he simply didn’t have a third hand to spare. The evidence must have fallen somewhere in the plaza.

Later, though he dealt with the toad, Gold Coins Mountain sent him crashing into the hospital. By the time he woke up and went looking, the evidence was gone. Someone must have picked it up…

Damn. So you’re the one who found it.

Spotting the phrase “evidence reportedly retrieved by a reporter from Char Department Store headquarters,” Leon’s face darkened. He could already predict what came next.

Sure enough, during the interview, Thomas—the golden-haired man—dismissed the authenticity of the evidence outright. He claimed Waterworks Company had never experienced theft and mocked the notion that they intentionally polluted water to sabotage Char Department Store as absurd. Seizing the opportunity, he launched into a scathing critique of Char Department Store, insinuating that the whole thing was a ploy by the “old Char” to dodge hefty compensation payments and shift public attention.

"Sigh…"

By this point, Leon knew there was no need to read further. As a major shareholder of Char Waterworks Company, any evidence released through Char Department Store carried inherent credibility. Even if the journalist cited anonymous sources, it might have sparked doubt or drawn attention. But instead, the reporter proudly declared he’d stumbled upon the evidence himself—practically inviting skepticism. Still… compared to others too afraid to report anything, the guy deserved credit for having the guts to publish the truth, however clumsily.

Shaking his head resignedly, Leon handed the newspaper back to the red-haired chief without dwelling further.

"Aren’t you going to say something?"

The chief raised an eyebrow, amused, as she studied Leon’s expression—a mix of frustration and resignation but surprisingly little anger. "Those three escaped punishment. I thought you’d be furious. Why do you look so calm?"

"Of course I’m angry," Leon replied, shaking his head. "But stealing that evidence wasn’t about justice. It was to ensure those patients received compensation instead of being left to scream on hospital floors. Though imperfect, we’ve achieved the main objective. As for the rest… I’ll file it away and address it later if the chance arises. Do you have anything else for me? If not, I’d like to spend the next few days practicing at the shooting range."

"Nope~ Off you go~"

Watching Leon leave with a smile, the red-haired chief sipped her tea, narrowing her eyes thoughtfully.

So, not abandoning it entirely but filing it away for future opportunities, huh?

Come to think of it… when I suggested he infiltrate the Lion family under the guise of reconnecting, will he seize this "opportunity" to create some kind of "big splash"?
