Chapter 60: Beneath the Calm of Everyday Life...
"Brother~"
Not long after the cherubic-faced girl had left the hospital room, Anna entered carrying a small cloth bag. Her eyes sparkled with curiosity as she asked, "What were you two talking about? Miss Amy looked like she was in a good mood—her eyes aren’t even as puffy anymore."
"Haha, we talked about something good, of course."
With his younger siblings’ schooling issue resolved, Leon’s spirits were high. Smiling, he shared the news: "I didn’t take any compensation from Char Company. Instead, I asked them for a favor—they’ve arranged for Melanie and William to attend school."
"Really?"
Hearing that her younger siblings now had a place at a school, Anna’s eyes lit up with joy. She quickly moved to sit by the bedside, pulling out lunch boxes from the cloth bag while asking excitedly, "Which public school is it? The one on Blackstone Lane? Or the one outside the city near the alchemy factory?"
"Neither."
Leon shook his head with a grin, deciding not to keep her guessing. "It’s Shipbridge Academy—the one where Shipbridge Street meets Theatre Street."
"Shipbridge Academy?"
At the mention of this name, Anna couldn’t contain her excitement. A flush of delight spread across her pale cheeks. "Isn’t that the best school in the old city areas? If William and Melanie can study there, they’ll have a direct pathway through secondary school and even university if their grades are good! Oh my goodness… this is incredible!"
"Calm down, will you? Hold steady."
Seeing the lunchbox tilt dangerously in Anna’s hands, spilling soup through the lid's crack, Leon instinctively reached out to steady it. Though he managed to save his lunch, the sudden movement tugged at his broken ribs, causing him to pale with pain.
"Brother!"
Startled, Anna immediately stood up and helped Leon lean back against the pillow. After waiting a moment to ensure he was alright, she let out a sigh of relief but still looked worried. "You shouldn’t move around so much. Let me feed you."
Grimacing from the pain, Leon nodded reluctantly. He tilted his chin slightly, which was supported by a neck brace, and took a sip of the fish soup Anna brought to his lips.
"Hiss..."
Did he burn himself?
Hearing Leon’s sharp intake of breath, Anna blinked in surprise. She scooped another spoonful of the creamy white fish soup, tasted it herself, and said, "It’s not hot though?"
"It’s not the heat—it’s how fresh it tastes," Leon teased, choosing not to admit that he’d gasped due to the pain. Smiling, he added, "Anna~ This hospital seems to be doing wonders for you. After staying here a few days, you’ve not only gotten better but your cooking has improved too!"
"My cooking hasn’t changed; it’s just that we finally have enough money to buy live fish and spices now."
Taking a handkerchief from her pocket, Anna gently wiped away a bit of soup from the corner of Leon’s mouth. Then, she speared a piece of fish with her fork and held it up to him, saying cheerfully, "By the way, someone knocked on our door this morning. It was one of your colleagues delivering your weekly salary—nine gold coins!"
Nine gold coins...
Upon hearing this, Leon mentally calculated. His base weekly wage was twelve gold coins, plus two extra from the toad-related mission, making fourteen in total. If nine remained after paying off his bar tab... did those six bottles of wine Chief ordered really cost five gold coins?
Shocked by the price of the drinks, Leon hurriedly swallowed the fish in his mouth and checked the progress of [Martyr of the Wine Realm] via his badge panel. One hundred seventeen bottles... If each bottle cost that much, then the night he passed out drunk and got sent home by Chief, had he unknowingly spent nearly a hundred gold coins?!
…….
Dear Miss Olivia,
Ten days ago, during your visit to our establishment, you accrued an unpaid bill totaling 327 gold coins for alcohol purchases. We kindly request prompt payment upon receipt of this notice. We look forward to welcoming you again.
"..."
After reading the debt collection letter on her desk, the red-haired Chief sat silently, picked up a bottle, and took a large gulp of tea disguised as whiskey. Setting the bottle back down, she stared blankly at its amber liquid, identical in color to real whiskey.
What madness possessed me to let him drink so much?
Recalling fragments of that night—the blurry-eyed man who seemed perpetually on the verge of collapsing under the table yet refused to pass out no matter how much he drank—the Chief rubbed her throbbing temples.
"Chief, are you sure you want all these drinks? Shouldn’t we order some food too?"
"Just give me a taste of everything—one glass per type."
"What? That’s it? You’re such a lightweight!"
"Are you short on cash? Want me to chip in?"
"..."
Had she been scammed?
As memories of how her wallet had been systematically emptied came flooding back, the Chief clicked her tongue in frustration. The more she thought about it, the more she felt like a sucker. Not only had he claimed he wouldn’t drink much, but he ended up drinking far more than her. And when the booze ran out, he simply flopped onto the floor and fell asleep, leaving her to drag him home.
Feeling the weight of her newly replenished salary now dwindling once again, the Chief clenched her fists and vowed silently: I, Olivia, would rather starve or trick myself into drinking tea instead of wine before I ever share another drink with Leon.
Never.
Crumpling the debt notice and tossing it into the trash, the Chief pulled over a stack of newspapers and began flipping through recent headlines.
The Sun: "Shock: Citizen Struck by Sudden Fortune Outside Char Department Store Days Ago."
"Pfft."
Looking at the grayscale photo of Leon buried under piles of gold coins, visible only by his arms sticking out, the Chief chuckled. Snipping out the article, she tucked it into Leon’s file with a mischievous smile.
Perfect timing—a missing illustration for the Scale of Gold’s Sacred Spirit Incident report. I’ll use this. Heh, serves you right for scamming my booze money.
Oh, and it’s already been four days since then. Given Leon’s condition, he should be able to return to work today, right?
Finishing The Sun, satisfied there was nothing suspicious, the Chief continued browsing other papers.
Daily Digest: "Our Editor-in-chief Attacked by Rebels Who Claim: Nobles Are Nothing But Lice in Their Pants."
Financial Times: "Rose Department Store Revenue Plummets Amid Char Store Promotions; Potential Closure Rumored."
Dance & Entertainment Post: "Lead Actor Scandal Sparks Boycott; No Replacement Found; Master Wilde’s Performance May Be Delayed."
Hmm... Quite a few events, but none seem related to anomaly. The capital appears peaceful lately.
Nodding contentedly, the Chief prepared to tidy away the papers—but something caught her eye in the corner of the page.
New Industry Journal: "Ami Liquor Launches New Couple’s Drink: Buy Together and Drink On-Site for 50% Off."
"Gulp..."
