Chapter 89: Ptui!
Thanks to the dense forest and towering peaks, along with the layer of black fur covering his face, no one but Wang Ping himself knew that a certain honey badger’s cheeks were flushed red.
“Uh, hahaha… It’s all just a misunderstanding, buddy…”
Wang Ping took a couple of steps forward, intending to pat Dahei on the head or massage the spot where he’d been slapped earlier. But Dahei’s eyes darted away, and it instinctively turned its head to avoid the touch. Though part of it wanted to run, it ultimately stayed rooted in place, letting Wang Ping’s paw land awkwardly on its canine face.
“Don’t worry, boy. I’m not that fragile!”
Wang Ping gave Dahei a couple of gentle pats before rubbing its furry cheek affectionately.
“Woof~” Dahei let out a low grumble from deep within its throat, its tail wagging once again.
Some people believe humans get stuck in their heads because they lack perspective. But Wang Ping was standing in a place vast enough to put anything into perspective.
He had returned to the edge of the bamboo grove, though this time he didn’t approach the cliff. Instead, he settled down at a safe distance from the edge, gazing out at the distant mountains bathed in the soft glow of the approaching sunrise. Behind him, the rustle of grass signaled Dahei quietly following. Seeing that Wang Ping wasn’t doing anything unusual—just sitting calmly on the grass—it mimicked the posture, squatting beside him.
A golden halo slowly spread across the mountaintops in the distance, thinning the mist that lingered between the peaks. As the first rays of sunlight pierced through, scattering light across the valleys, it was as if God Himself had knocked over a kaleidoscope, painting the world in dazzling colors.
Wang Ping had seen countless sunrises, but never one shared with a dog. Dahei, despite its daily patrols around these parts, probably hadn’t bothered to watch the sunrise here often either. Its doggy face brimmed with curiosity now, reflecting the newly risen sun peeking over the far-off peaks. It seemed almost eager to do something—anything—to mark the moment.
After staring for a while, Dahei suddenly stood up and barked toward the valley.
“Woof! Woooof!”
It reminded Wang Ping of how humans sometimes feel compelled to shout when they reach the summit of a mountain, facing an endless expanse of wilderness below. The dog’s bark echoed far into the valley, reverberating against the rocky walls.
Inspired, Wang Ping stood up too, took a deep breath, and let out a loud cry.
“YAAAAAAHHH~~~~”
“Wooof~~”
“YAAAYAAAAYAAAAA~~~”
“Wooof~~ Wooof Wooof~~~”
One badger and one dog, like competitors in some bizarre contest, began shouting back and forth into the valley. Their calls mingled wildly, bouncing off the hillsides.
Dahei was fully engaged now, its tail wagging furiously, its expression growing more animated by the second. At one point, it even jumped up in excitement. After every bark, it’d glance down at Wang Ping. If Wang Ping called out, Dahei would follow suit without hesitation.
After what felt like ages of yelling, Wang Ping started feeling lightheaded, his lungs gasping for air. With a sigh, he collapsed onto the grass, staring up at the swaying bamboo leaves above and the vast blue sky beyond. His mind went blank, utterly empty.
Seeing that Wang Ping had stopped “playing,” Dahei also ceased its barking. It flopped down beside Wang Ping, resting its head on its crossed front paws, occasionally glancing over at him.
Suddenly, Wang Ping found himself laughing inwardly—at how ridiculous he must look right now.
If Jacob could see him like this, he’d probably laugh so hard his teeth would fall out.
A scruffy cloud drifted lazily across the sky, looking like someone’s perpetually unkempt beard. In his daze, Wang Ping thought he saw Jacob’s smug, insufferable grin materialize in the heavens.
“Pfft! Laugh all you want, jerk! So what if I’ve turned into an animal? At least I’m still alive! You, on the other hand? Your grave’s probably sprouting weeds by now! Oh ho ho ho, you’ve got the nerve to laugh? I should be the one laughing at you!”
With newfound determination, Wang Ping scrambled to his feet, tiny arms akimbo, pointing accusingly at the sky, ready to unleash a torrent of insults.
But after opening his mouth and hesitating for a moment, the badger sighed and burst into laughter instead. Whether he was laughing at his own inability to curse properly or at Jacob’s misfortune, even he couldn’t say.
“Hahahaha~ HAHAHAHA~”
The laughter grew louder and louder until Wang Ping collapsed onto the ground, rolling around uncontrollably, his body shaking with mirth.
Dahei watched, utterly bewildered, its doggy eyes wide with confusion.
As the laughter continued, its pitch gradually dropped, but Wang Ping’s body shook more violently than ever. Tears streamed from his round little eyes, dripping onto the blades of grass beneath him.
“Whine~”
Dahei lowered its head, sniffed cautiously, then rested its large head on the ground beside Wang Ping, simply watching him.
“Wooooooh…”
Tears streaming down his face, Wang Ping turned and wrapped his arms tightly around Dahei’s approaching head, emitting strange, broken sobs from deep within his throat.
“Wooooooh…”
“Wooooooh…”
Dahei remained perfectly still, frozen in its submissive pose, allowing Wang Ping to cling to it. Its tail wagged steadily behind it like a small fan, sending fallen leaves swirling into the air.
For nearly half an hour, Wang Ping cried. By the time he was done, sunlight had flooded the entire hillside. Down below, the village of Shengjiawu came alive with the sounds of adults scolding and children laughing.
On the stone steps leading away from the bamboo grove, footsteps approached, accompanied by heavy breathing. Soon, a voice called out from afar.
“Dahei? Dahei?”
“Woof!”
Dahei responded with a bark. Wang Ping recognized the man’s voice—it belonged to the guy Dahei had argued with earlier.
“Huh? Why’d you come all the way up here?”
The man sounded puzzled as he followed the sound to the mountaintop.
By then, Wang Ping had finished crying and figured it was time to head back down. Climbing onto Dahei’s back, he gave the dog’s collar a pat.
Dahei rose and trotted out of the bamboo grove. Just past the pavilion, they ran smack into a middle-aged man wearing long pants and a button-up shirt, munching on half a steamed bun.
“Da…,” the man began, only to freeze mid-greeting when he spotted Wang Ping perched atop Dahei.
“What the hell is THAT?!”
The man spat out the bite of bun in his mouth, his eyes wide with astonishment.
“I am a honey badger, you idiot!” Wang Ping rolled his eyes—or tried to—but ended up blinking instead, which made him look oddly cute.
“Oh ho? What a cute little critter! Where’d you find this one, Dahei?” the man chuckled, squatting down and reaching out to pet Wang Ping.
“F this!”
Wang Ping bared his teeth at the approaching hand, kicking Dahei’s neck twice with his stubby legs, urging the dog onward like a jockey spurring a horse. Dahei squinted, dodging the man’s hand just in time, and bolted forward, leaving the man behind.
“Hey? Dahei, leaving already?”
Instead of touching Wang Ping, the man accidentally grabbed a handful of Dahei’s tail. Grimacing, he shook his hand free and watched as the dog sped off. Just then, Wang Ping turned abruptly on Dahei’s back, opened his mouth, and—
“Ptui!”
A mysterious liquid flew through the air, landing with a wet splat squarely on the man’s remaining half-bun.
The man stared, dumbfounded.
Meanwhile, Wang Ping raised a paw, wiped his mouth with the back of it, and shook his head ruefully.
“I missed… I was aiming for his shoe…”
“Woof! Woof!”
Dahei barked twice in agreement, its eyes crinkling with joy as he raced down the mountain. Its doggy face radiated pure happiness, as though it’d finally found a kindred spirit.
