Chapter 79: Gu Lang’s Terms

In Wang Ping’s mind, a guy like Gu Lang—wealthy, young, decently handsome, and quirky without being outright stupid—was exactly the type of man most women would swoon over.

So when this certain someone rolled up in his flashy Jeep Wrangler, dressed to impress, in one of China’s most modern cities, and then insisted on going it alone, Wang Ping couldn’t help but jump to conclusions. What else could this possibly be other than a hookup mission?

Wang Ping, ever the imaginative one, mentally stepped into Gu Lang’s shoes and tried to envision what might happen next.

“Tch! Gu Lang, you shameless pervert!” he muttered under his breath.

Gu Lang, seemingly oblivious to the sudden disdainful glare from a certain honey badger in the passenger seat, made a quick phone call to confirm someone’s location before pulling into the parking lot of an office building plaza.

“Alright, just wait here in the car. I’ll be back in no time,” he said casually, reaching for the keys. But after glancing back at Wang Ping, he hesitated for a moment and decided to leave the keys in the ignition instead.

Wang Ping didn’t react outwardly, though inwardly he cursed Gu Lang for prioritizing romance over friendship. Once Gu Lang was out of sight, Wang Ping hopped onto the driver’s seat, bored out of his mind, and stared blankly at the tablet mounted on the dashboard.

This wasn’t like their time in Africa. Here, there were cameras—pointed directly at the driver’s seat—and Wang Ping knew better than to mess around.

After some thought, Wang Ping feigned curiosity and leaned closer to the tablet, pretending to sniff around. In reality, his sharp eyes darted across the screen, searching for any settings that might disable the camera.

“The streamer’s already gone.”

“This is so unfair, leaving Big Brother Buzz-Cut all alone.”

“More like leaving him alone in the car.”

“It doesn’t matter; we’re not here to watch him anyway.”

“Too bad we can’t send voice messages.”

“Douyu, please add voice-enabled bullet comments!”

“By the way, will Buzz-Cut Bro adapt to China’s climate?”

“Don’t worry, he’s tougher than you think.”

“That’s right, our country’s environment is nurturing.”

“Shame Big Brother Buzz-Cut will end up single now.”

While the regulars in the live chat bantered, Wang Ping had already poked several suspicious-looking settings with his healed snout, but to no avail—he still hadn’t found the option to turn off the camera.

He silently regretted not learning more about computers from Iru back in Africa. Sure, both of them were nerds who preferred staying indoors to play games, but their approaches couldn’t have been more different. Wang Ping played games for fun, while Iru… well, Iru hacked them.

Often, by the time Wang Ping was still figuring out the mechanics of a new game, Iru would already be max-level thanks to his endless tweaking of codes. In the past, Wang Ping had mocked Iru’s methods, but now, he genuinely wished he’d picked up a thing or two about coding.

Just then, the sound of high heels clicking against the pavement grew louder, approaching the car. The noise stopped abruptly outside the driver’s side door.

Wang Ping’s small ears twitched as he turned to look. Through the tinted window, he spotted a woman with voluminous curly hair standing just outside.

Was she here for Gu Lang? Did she recognize the license plate?

Unlike the windshield, most car windows were one-way glass, meaning those outside couldn’t see in, but those inside had a clear view of the outside. At this angle, not only Wang Ping but also the viewers in the live stream could see her clearly.

Hmm, a 36… Not bad taste, Gu Lang.

As Wang Ping debated whether to hide somewhere inconspicuous, the woman—who had been wearing a mask and sunglasses—suddenly bent down, removed her mask, and began applying lipstick directly using the car window as a makeshift mirror.

Wang Ping: “….”

He never thought he’d personally witness such an internet cliché come to life.

Meanwhile, far from the scene Wang Ping and the audience imagined—a romantic rendezvous—Gu Lang sat comfortably in a café adjacent to the plaza, deep in conversation with a well-dressed man in his early thirties. This man, sporting thin-rimmed glasses and a sharp suit, was none other than Chen Bai, the manager of Douyu’s Outdoor Channel whom Gu Lang had contacted during his time in Africa.

Their meeting had been scheduled long ago but delayed due to Gu Lang’s house arrest. Now that he was in Shanghai to pick up Wang Ping, Gu Lang decided to kill two birds with one stone and settle this business as well.

Contrary to the stiff, formal exchanges Gu Lang had anticipated, Chen Bai proved surprisingly chatty and even cracked a few jokes, making Gu Lang momentarily feel like he’d met a kindred spirit.

But just as their conversation hit its stride, Chen Bai pulled out two contracts from his bag and placed them on the table, much to Gu Lang’s astonishment.

“Brother Chen, what’s this?” Gu Lang asked, bewildered.

“We discussed this over the phone, didn’t we? Once you returned to the country, we’d formalize your contract with the platform. Here, I’ve prepared everything. One contract is for you, and the other is for your pet.” Chen Bai smiled smugly, pushing the documents closer to Gu Lang.

“I said that? Over the phone? I don’t remember…” Gu Lang stammered, visibly flustered.

“Hmm… let me think…” Chen Bai furrowed his brow before replying, “It must’ve been about half a month ago. I reviewed your profile in the backend and called you. You were still in Tanzania then.”

Half a month ago?

Gu Lang racked his brain. Hadn’t he just been rescued from Ngorongoro around that time? His first contact with home after returning to Karatu had been late at night.

Oh crap!

A horrifying realization dawned on him. Could it have been that night—the one where he got blackout drunk and sold out his Boss?

“Remember now?” Chen Bai’s eyes gleamed as he watched Gu Lang’s expression. “Based on your requests, I revised the contract. Extended the term from three years to five, increased the breach penalty from five million to thirty million yuan, and set your salary at the minimum standard for new streamers. Anything else you’d like to add?”

Holy sht! These terms… I’ll add your whole damn family!

Stunned, Gu Lang blurted out, “These… are my demands?”

Chen Bai shrugged, his grin infuriatingly smug. “At first, I didn’t get it either, but yes, these were your repeated requests. You even threatened to switch platforms if we didn’t comply. After consulting with the higher-ups, we decided you had potential in outdoor streaming and agreed to meet your conditions.”

Thanks a fcking lot!

Gu Lang’s face darkened as he resisted the urge to splash his coffee onto Chen Bai’s grinning mug.

So much for finding a kindred spirit. These suited-up bastards were all the same—no good whatsoever. Worst of all, he couldn’t argue with Chen Bai’s words because, on that drunken night, he’d sold out his honey badger. If he could do that, what couldn’t he do?

Back in the car, Wang Ping had been watching the woman apply makeup for quite some time. After finishing her lipstick, she removed her sunglasses and started lining her eyes, giving Wang Ping and the live stream audience a masterclass in what was often referred to as “the greatest of Asia’s four dark arts.”

Maybe he should scare her a little?

Waiting around was boring. While the viewers entertained themselves by critiquing Wang Ping or the woman, Wang Ping himself had nothing better to do.

Feigning curiosity, Wang Ping moved closer to the window. “Accidentally,” his paw brushed against the button controlling the window. With a soft whir, the glass slid down.

The woman froze mid-stroke, her gaze instinctively darting toward the car.
But the driver’s seat and passenger seat were empty—no sign of anyone inside.

Just as confusion settled in, Wang Ping popped up from below the window frame and stuck his tongue out at the startled woman.

“Bleh~~~~~”

For a split second, the air seemed to freeze. Their eyes locked.

“OH MY GAAHHH!! (థдథ)!!” Her piercing scream triggered a chain reaction of car alarms, echoing through the parking lot and fading into the distance.
