Chapter 78: Little Fists Pounding Your Face
To be fair, the quarantine area at Shanghai Customs wasn’t too bad.
The environment was clean and well-maintained since these pets were here for inspection—not like some shelter where survival was the only concern. For animals, it was relatively comfortable.
The cages were spacious enough, the air dry and ventilated. Staff came daily to clean the area and check on the health of the temporarily detained creatures. Most of the pets seemed content, showing no signs of rebellion.
But Wang Ping wasn’t a dog who could spend all day chasing his tail, nor was he a cat who could nap whenever he pleased. Each passing day added another layer of frustration to his already simmering mood.
On the first day of “doing time,” the person who had promised to visit didn’t show up.
“It’s okay,” Wang Ping consoled himself. “Maybe something came up.”
On the second day, that someone still didn’t appear.
“Never mind,” Wang Ping reasoned with himself. “Gu Lang has responsibilities. He must be spending time with his family.” He tried hard not to glance at the poodle in the neighboring cage, who was obsessively humping the bars.
By the third day, things escalated.
The poodle—now sporting multiple bumps on its head courtesy of Wang Ping—had retreated to the far corner of its cage, whimpering pitifully while continuing its obsessive behavior. Meanwhile, Wang Ping’s cage had become a no-go zone for any nearby dogs or cats.
Wang Ping radiated an aura of low-pressure menace, pacing back and forth, claws scraping against the floor. His posture screamed readiness for a fight.
Truthfully, Gu Lang hadn’t intended to ghost Wang Ping.
He wanted to stay in Shanghai until Wang Ping was released, but his entire family opposed the idea.
Gu Lang’s parents dismissed his attachment to the pet as excessive. His mother even told him she’d send one of her employees to pick Wang Ping up when the time came, insisting he stay home and relax.
His grandmother, though fond of animals herself—they kept a Border Collie at home to patrol the tea plantation—also vetoed the idea of Gu Lang staying in Shanghai for a week. However, she did promise he could personally retrieve Wang Ping after the quarantine ended.
Thus, while Wang Ping languished in the customs quarantine, Gu Lang found himself under house arrest at home.
When the call finally came from customs stating that Wang Ping had passed inspection and could be picked up, Gu Lang nearly wept with relief. Freedom, at last!
……
The drive from Hangzhou to Shanghai typically took two to three hours via expressway. Gu Lang’s ride was a custom-modified Jeep Wrangler, a graduation gift from his mother. Originally, she’d planned to buy him a Range Rover Evoque—flashy yet affordable—but Gu Lang, influenced by his wealthy peers, opted instead for this rugged vehicle, much to his mother’s dismay.
Once his “house arrest” officially ended, Gu Lang wasted no time retrieving his long-unused Jeep from the garage and speeding toward Shanghai.
When Wang Ping saw Gu Lang, he remained eerily calm. No claws were drawn, no angry screeches erupted. Instead, he allowed himself to be placed into a brand-new pet carrier without resistance.
Of course, this calm demeanor was largely due to the presence of a customs officer accompanying Gu Lang. After being secured in the carrier, Wang Ping even flashed a charming smile at the officer, mimicking scenes of prisoners being released in movies.
“He’s so cute!” the officer giggled, waving goodbye before leaving. Wang Ping reciprocated with a toothy grin and a little wave, feigning innocence.
It wasn’t until they reached the parking lot outside the quarantine area that the real drama began. As soon as Gu Lang opened the carrier inside the Jeep, Wang Ping sprang into action.
“Ahh… WHAT THE—”
Before Gu Lang could react, Wang Ping grabbed the empty carrier and swung it straight into his face. Stunned, Gu lang instinctively raised his hands to shield himself, only to find Wang Ping leaping onto his lap. With his sharp claws retracted, Wang Ping balled his furry paw into a fist and delivered a swift punch to Gu Lang’s eye socket.
“Ugh…”
Tears welled up in Gu Lang’s eyes as pain shot through his face.
“Hold on a second…”
Wang Ping ignored him, unleashing a flurry of punches that left Gu Lang reeling.
“It’s not what you think!”
“Listen to me!”
“For crying out loud, stop! I’m sorry, okay?!”
Meanwhile, unbeknownst to them, their altercation was being broadcast live to thousands of viewers. A high-definition camera mounted on the dashboard streamed everything directly to Gu Lang’s live channel.
The chat exploded with laughter and commentary:
“Haha, I’m not listening, I’m not listening!”
“He looks like a wronged girlfriend, hahaha!”
“Apologize immediately! Right now!”
“Warning: High-energy moment ahead!”
“True·Restore My Beauty Punches!”
“Little fists pounding your face!”
“Boss’s boxing skills are unmatched!”
“Wow, look how he retracts his claws—he really loves you!”
“IllegalAccount gifted 1 Super Rocket...”
“IllegalAccount: Boss! Welcome to China!”
“Welcome +1”
“Haha, welcome, Boss!”
“PartingIsSuchSweetSorrow gifted 8 Yachts…”
“PartingIsSuchSweetSorrow: Boss is mighty!”
It wasn’t until the sound of a Super Rocket donation echoed through the Jeep that Wang Ping paused mid-punch. Glancing at the tablet screen filled with comments shouting “High-energy moment ahead,” his anger surged anew. One swift kick to Gu Lang’s ribs crossed his mind, but he refrained—for now.
“Ugh…” Gu Lang whimpered, clutching the carrier defensively. Aside from a few tears squeezed out from the corners of his eyes, he hadn’t sustained any serious injuries. Wang Ping knew how to dish out pain without causing lasting harm.
Rubbing his sore nose, Gu Lang sat up straight, tossing the carrier onto the backseat. He grabbed some tissues from the dashboard, dabbing at the snot and tears streaming down his face.
“There, feel better?”
His tone was casual, almost nonchalant, as if they were merely chatting about dinner plans in passing.
Wang Ping tilted his head thoughtfully. Hmm, the impact seems weaker than usual. Have my punching skills declined, or is this guy just used to getting beat up.
Glancing at Wang Ping sitting primly in the passenger seat, occasionally peeking at the tablet, Gu Lang sighed. “I swear I didn’t abandon you there on purpose. My family wouldn’t let me leave the house. If it weren’t for picking you up today, Grandma would’ve kept me grounded.”
Well, aren’t you grateful? Wang Ping smirked inwardly. Now that he was officially settled in China as Buzz-Cut Bro, he leaned back comfortably, eyeing Gu Lang sideways.
Aren’t we going home yet?
“Oh, right. I need to meet someone after this. You’ll wait in the car and entertain everyone while I’m gone, okay?” Gu Lang said, starting the engine and steering onto the road.
Meeting someone? So this trip wasn’t entirely for me?
The viewers in the live stream perked up, eager for gossip.
Ah, the scent of drama is in the air.
