Chapter 88: The End of Days Part 7

The light of Planet Namie waned, gradually dimming as the asteroids that flew farther away surged toward the two massive fleets like rolling clouds and waves.

The escort squadrons of cruisers from the "Zeus" and "The Divine Revelation" carriers spread out in all directions. Missile launchers of various types mounted on the ships slowly rotated, firing high-explosive missiles one after another at the encroaching asteroid belt.

From a distance, the sight was spectacular. Streaks of multi-colored flames trailed across the sky, colliding with countless boulders and bursting into a series of flashes, akin to New Year's fireworks, falling like a shower of petals.

Railguns and various cannons and rapid-fire turrets also spewed forth streams of fire, striving to hit any remaining asteroids that had escaped the initial barrage.

At this moment, the once-hostile fleets found themselves united against a common enemy—an enemy created by Tang Fang, one formidable enough to take all their lives.

Fortunately, Austin remained unaware of these developments. Had he known the truth, even his ironclad heart would have surely shattered. Francis’s selfish desires had led to the mission's failure, resulting in the loss of all personnel in the 3789th Division. Now, it endangered the entire fleet. Everything unfolding today stemmed from the sordid deal between Francis and Wei Dongfang.

A slight tremor shook the deck beneath Austin's feet, caused by a five-meter-wide rock striking the port side. His eyes were glued to the monitors showing flashing images, and his hands involuntarily gripped the armrests of the sofa tightly, his nails digging deeper into the fabric.

A pile of twisted metal debris floated past. On the severely damaged titanium plate, a string of symbols could still be faintly discerned: "THR-HDT-3025."

He remembered that was the designation for a Tiger Shark Squadron destroyer, captained by Alfred Leonard, the deputy commander of the squadron—a promising officer indeed.

"Why? Why?" Austin muttered. "Before the battle, geological survey ships conducted a deep scan of Planet Namie, confirming it to be an ancient planet nearing its twilight years. Yet, this 'reserved and modest' celestial body suddenly exploded. Because of that unknown fleet? It doesn’t make sense. How could they possibly cause such chaos with their meager force?"

The vibrations continued, growing more intense and frequent. Despite the protection of over a hundred White Shark-class cruisers, some smaller rocks inevitably struck the hull.

On the forward projection screen displaying the ship’s health status, bright red zones indicated impact points. Thankfully, the ship's armor was thick enough that these rocks, each less than five meters in diameter, couldn't inflict significant structural damage.

Austin glanced at the monitor showing the view from the stern. The distant asteroid field loomed like a horde of demons. His face darkened; these were merely the fragments flung outward before Planet Namie fully exploded. If the larger chunks arrived, not a single ship would escape.

"Dennis, how much longer?" Austin asked through gritted teeth.

"Almost there, almost there," Dennis replied without looking up. His face flushed red, sweat pouring down his cheeks. The Zeus was simply too large, and the constant impact of debris made auxiliary unit calculations incredibly challenging.

"General, cruiser THR-CD-2785 has suffered minor damage to its power system and is withdrawing from the battle line."

"General, battleship THR-RDT-088's radar system has been destroyed. They're requesting assistance."

"General, a dense cluster of small debris detected, projected impact location: starboard deck."

"General, Thunderclap Squadron has completed warp calculations. Prince White requests permission to evacuate first."

White? Austin took a deep breath and looked at the Apollo warship on the monitor, surrounded by dozens of Tiger Shark destroyers and White Shark cruisers. He nodded deeply. Although this decision might dishearten those still guarding the Zeus, he had no choice. The mission had failed, and the extent of the fleet's losses was still unknown. If Prince White perished here, both he and his family would pay a heavy price.

The order was quickly relayed to the Thunderclap Squadron. Seconds later, a handsome young man with a complexion smoother than a movie star's appeared on the central screen.

Distorted by the particle storm, Prince White's voice crackled, "Gen…eral, I'll wait for you on Planet Muur. This battle wasn't your fault. I will report everything truthfully...to His Majesty."

Austin nodded with relief and forced a smile. "Lieutenant White, fair winds."

White gave a crisp military salute, then cut the communication. At the same moment, streaks of azure light from the Thunderclap Squadron's position sliced through the void, vanishing in an instant.

"General, please hold on tight." The intelligence officer's voice was grave as the Thunderclap Squadron disappeared.

A massive rock about 22 meters in diameter flashed across the rear starboard monitor, smashing straight into a hangar deck. The immense pressure deformed the ship's armor, sending sparks flying like a rainstorm.

A violent jolt sent crew members sprawling across the bridge. Alarms blared, and flickering lights bathed Austin's face in a blood-red hue.

Without prompting, the intelligence officer reported, "General, the main structure of the ship remains intact. Only the starboard hangar is damaged. Twelve 'Blue Ant' fighters have caught fire and exploded. Repair teams are currently working to extinguish the blaze."

Hearing the main structure was unharmed, Austin exhaled a sigh of relief. This was thanks to the battleships and cruisers intercepting debris. Otherwise, who knew what kind of damage the Zeus might have endured?

"General, cruiser THR-CD-2674's aft thruster has been critically damaged and exploded, causing a severe fire. It seems..."

"General, battleship THR-RDT-082 has suffered a major collision, fracturing the keel. Crew members are abandoning ship."

...

Without needing reports from the intelligence officer, Austin already saw the scene behind them on the central screen. A White Shark cruiser failed to evade a conical rock, which struck its portside thruster. Explosions and shockwaves erupted like uncorked champagne, spreading rapidly.

Another White Shark cruiser used its 900mm heavy cannon to shatter a 30-meter rock but was struck moments later by a 16 or 17-meter rock glowing a dull brown. It plunged into the starboard cabin, creating a massive hole. The kinetic force tilted the ship, causing the cannon, already aimed at another rock, to strike a battleship several kilometers away, obliterating its communications tower.

On the other side, a swarm of debris flew past, forming a fan-shaped defensive array. The ships were pummeled like targets in an archery range, leaving dents of varying depths.

Finally, accompanied by a fierce particle storm, an even more ferocious wave of rocks arrived. A slab over 100 meters in diameter descended like a giant pancake, landing squarely on a White Shark cruiser.

Shrapnel and rock fragments sprayed outward like fireworks, igniting explosions that lit up the surrounding void. Two nearby Dogfish Shark escorts were caught in the blast, careening into the rear formation and triggering a chain reaction of collisions.

Watching ship after ship lose power and drift lifelessly or get smashed to pieces, Austin's heart bled. Every flash, every explosion made his eye twitch involuntarily.

If this were the front lines, sacrificing oneself for glory, honor, and the expansion of Celtic territory would be honorable and valiant. But this wasn't the battlefield. They were retreating in disgrace, only to be relentlessly pummeled by flying rocks, reduced to cosmic debris.

Even if they survived, this would forever be a stain on Austin's career—an indelible blot on his military record.

"Alright... done," Dennis gasped, utterly exhausted after exerting himself under the dual pressures of the debris crisis and Austin's demands.

"Pilots, what are you waiting for?" Austin snapped, his eyes flashing with intensity as he barked at the crew in front.

"Yes, General."

The 700-meter-long Zeus glided through space, enveloped in a vast distortion field. Its rear thrusters ignited, casting a brilliant azure glow across one side of the void. With a blinding flash, the Zeus vanished, leaving behind only a fleeting afterimage.

No sooner had it disappeared than a 30-meter rock zipped through the residual image, continuing its journey into the distance.

The Zeus's departure acted like the starting pistol in a race. The battleships and cruisers tasked with escort duties scrambled to activate their warp drives, disappearing into hyperspace one after another.

Many ships miscalculated their warp coordinates due to impacts, but so what? To flee offered a slim chance of survival; to stay meant certain death.

As the rear ships withdrew, firepower diminished, and the pressure on the forward vessels surged. A massive wave of rocks arrived, shattering shields instantly. The leading cruisers were scattered like sand in the wind, tumbling chaotically and colliding with other ships, setting off a domino effect that promptly dissolved the formation.

Operational ships fled en masse, but many more were caught in the cascading wreckage, enduring the meteoric onslaught and transforming into sparking, flaming heaps of space junk.

A similar scene unfolded at the Saint Violet Fleet's defensive zone. In total, 457 ships on both sides were destroyed, including the complete annihilation of the Thunder Fleet's Tiger Shark Squadron. Of the combined 1,879 ships from both fleets, nearly 25% were lost in this disaster.

As the last of the flying rocks receded and the remnants of Planet Namie's light faded, a vast cloud of dark brown heavy particle dust hung suspended in space, undulating like a thin veil carelessly tossed by a maiden into the breeze, illuminated softly by the tranquil stars.
