Chapter 79: Life and Death Sniper Duel
Arroz moved like a Mandrill, using the shockwave from below as cover. With a powerful leap, he soared several meters into the air, grabbing onto a severed rubber hose that had been blown apart by the grenade. Using its recoil, he swung himself higher, raising his rifle toward Clam Doug’s hiding spot.
Clam Doug was an unassuming sniper. Few people, not even Francis or those in the fleet command, knew his name—perhaps fewer than could count on one hand.
It wasn’t that he lacked a name; rather, he didn’t need one. When necessary, the relevant commanders only needed to know his code name—"Lone Wolf"—and that was enough.
"Lone Wolf" was both a codename and an organization. Under Emperor Colcrav Stuart of the Empire, there existed an infamous army known as the Penal Army, tasked with dealing with deserters, rebels, and hostile forces both within and beyond the borders to uphold the emperor's authority.
The Penal Army was divided into four divisions: "Blood Wolves," "Shadow Wolves," "Lone Wolf," and "Hydra."
The "Blood Wolves" division had the largest number of members and the most notorious reputation. Their brutal methods and merciless actions struck fear into the hearts of many. Deserters, insurgents, and heretics within the empire were all targets for eradication by the "Blood Wolves." Compared to the imperial judiciary, their methods of execution were far more barbaric—beheadings, burnings at the stake, iron maidens, dismemberment—all ancient punishments that seemed out of place in the modern era but were still employed by them.
It was said that the soldiers of the "Blood Wolves" were elite veterans who had survived eight years of military service. Hardened by the fires of war, they were ruthless, cruel, and unwavering in their obedience to orders.
The "Shadow Wolves" division had fewer members, but each was an experienced operative with extraordinary individual capabilities. Unlike the "Blood Wolves," their mission was to deal with deserters who fled abroad or traitorous officers. Assassination, poisoning, sowing discord—their tactics were flexible and varied, greatly upholding the empire's prestige and deterring disloyal elements within the military.
Emperor Colcrav I once personally praised them as "the blade of the Celtic holy sword."
Compared to the "Blood Wolves" and "Shadow Wolves," the "Lone Wolf" division had even fewer members. However, every single member was a legend—either possessing exceptional combat skills or extraordinary talent and sharp instincts. Without exaggeration, any member of the "Lone Wolf" would be a capable leader under the banner of a regional lord.
Though small in numbers, the "Lone Wolf" was the most trusted unit by the emperor, often referred to as Colcrav Stuart’s right-hand force. They frequently appeared in critical military operations.
Take this operation, for example. The emperor hadn’t deployed his personal fleet but instead sent Prince Walker’s Thunder Fleet. This didn’t mean he didn’t value the Epsilon ruins on Planet Namie—in fact, he valued them so much that he lost sleep over it. The arrangement was merely a strategy to mislead the Sulru Empire’s forces. Clam Doug’s presence indirectly confirmed this.
Within the armies of the various lords, the code "Lone Wolf" represented the emperor’s supreme authority.
Finally, there was the "Hydra." More than just an army, it was a specialized fleet. Named after the nine-headed sea serpent of Greek mythology, the "Hydra" fleet lived up to its namesake. Its ships surpassed ordinary fleets in attack power, defense, mobility, and advanced technologies such as reconnaissance, interception, and stealth. Indeed, the fleet’s role was to patrol the empire’s borders, instilling fear in disloyal nobles and preventing rebellious factions from arising.
Though Clam Doug was merely a major, he was part of the "Lone Wolf." His assignment to oversee the decryption work here was proof of the emperor’s high regard for him. He had every reason to be proud. Whether facing Francis or even Lieutenant General Austin Scott of the Thunder Fleet, he could stand tall without arrogance or humility.
In his view, Tang Fang’s arrival was an unexpected complication. He had no interest in whatever grudge Francis had with them. Anyone who tried to disrupt the plan deserved to die.
Earlier, the alien creatures had protected them, leaving him no opportunity to take a shot. But when Tang Fang walked alone up the stairs and connected with the psionic flame, he finally saw his chance.
Though the ability to manipulate psionic flames shocked him, after weighing the situation, he decided to take the shot. First, the "Guardian Knight" armor was bulky and lacked agility. Second, Tang Fang seemed fully absorbed in controlling the ruins. To Clam, it was like being invited into a young woman’s room late at night for tea—what happened next felt inevitable. A headshot would be clean and straightforward.
But who would have guessed that after undressing, he’d be kicked out of the room? The cooked duck grew wings and flew away.
After being exposed, he endured a barrage of fire that pinned him down. When the smoke cleared and the enemy’s assault eased, he peeked out only to find his primary target hidden behind cover.
He had missed. Clam Doug, the top sniper of the "Lone Wolf," had missed.
This was a tremendous humiliation, a stain on his record. Clam burned with rage, directing all his hatred toward the hulking figure in black armor, resembling a bear. If not for his reckless barrage of fire, the follow-up shot would have finished the job.
Fueled by resentment, he pulled the trigger, aiming a fatal shot at the "bear’s" head. This time, he vowed to blow the target’s skull apart, making a bloody mess. Yet again, reality disappointed him.
"SHIT. What the hell is that black thing made of? It’s tougher than diamond."
This shot earned him fiercer retaliation. Clearly, the guy was stunned, as the grenade’s aim was atrocious, hitting the mechanical arm and severing the photoelectric sensors and frequency modulation units. This caused the stored data crystal to fall to the lower level, triggering a massive explosion.
The chaotic shockwave and blinding electric light obscured his vision once more. Clam rested his head against the stock of his rifle, scanning through the scope with his right eye. Confirming that the explosion’s aftermath wouldn’t dissipate soon, he allowed himself a brief moment of distraction.
"Hmm, the 32mm 'Thor's Wrath Mod' is about to be released. I wonder how it compares to what I’m using now. Can the 'Guardian Knight' handle that terrifying recoil? It seems it’s time to properly train with the empire’s new powered armor, the 'Earth Knight.'"
Before the thought faded, a flash of red light appeared in his scope—the thermal imaging data fed back by the integrated infrared detection unit of the "Thor's Wrath."
Clam’s pupils dilated instantly, a chill racing through his body. Using the explosion’s shockwave to propel himself into the air and balancing with the dangling hose—such movements, such skill—were these the actions of an ordinary soldier? Oh no… Even among the "Lone Wolf," experts in light-footed techniques couldn’t perform with such fluid grace. Who… who was this man?
The thought barely crossed his mind before an overwhelming sense of impending doom replaced it. Clam didn’t have time to think further. He twisted his body slightly, quickly adjusting his rifle to lock onto the agile figure that sent shivers down his spine.
What he witnessed next left him astounded. That monkey-like figure wasn’t just nimble; his marksmanship was beyond S+ level. Shooting while moving, perfect trajectory analysis, absolute calm, and impeccable timing…
Was that really an assault rifle in his hands? Or was it a meticulously calibrated and maintained sniper rifle?
As a sniper, Clam’s shooting prowess was undeniable. His "S-" rating placed him among the elite even within the "Lone Wolf."
As for S-level? That was a realm only Deputy Commander Galileo Rogue could reach.
Who was this man? Who was he? Someone with such shooting skills couldn’t possibly be a nobody.
Of course, this train of thought was the last activity of his brain. A 7mm metal spike shot through the scope of the "Thor's Wrath," piercing the "Guardian Knight’s" visor, entering his right eye, exiting through the back of his skull, and leaving a crimson hole in his helmet before striking the silver wall with a spark.
