Chapter 62: There Are People Around, Give Me Some Face

Wang Ping had overlooked one crucial detail—or perhaps he hadn’t overlooked it so much as dismissed it due to habit. No matter how authentically human his soul might be, the undeniable truth was that he currently inhabited the body of an animal.

It wasn’t that Gu Lang would harm him or fail to accommodate him; rather, the idea of taking Wang Ping home hadn’t even crossed Gu Lang’s mind. This wasn’t like raising a domestic dog back in China, where you could simply bring it home if Grandma approved. Wang Ping was a non-native species in a foreign land, and practical concerns loomed large. While invasive species weren’t an issue here—after all, there were no female honey badgers in China for Wang Ping to propagate with—the real worry lay in environmental adaptation.

Gu Lang fretted over whether Wang Ping could handle the drastic shift from a tropical climate to a temperate one. After traveling thousands of miles, what if he fell ill from the change? That would be nothing short of tragic.

This was precisely why volunteers worldwide who rescued wildlife often opted to release them back into their natural habitats or relocate them to local zoos. Homesickness wasn’t exclusive to humans; animals, too, struggled when abruptly introduced to unfamiliar environments.

Deciding not to disturb Wang Ping’s bubble bath, Gu Lang closed the bathroom door and returned to the room. He retrieved a tablet from one of the metal cases, plugged it in, and began searching online for nearby small zoos. True to Zhang Jianming’s words, Karatu lacked a public zoo since the entire Ngorongoro Conservation Area functioned as a massive open-air sanctuary. However, many local guesthouses capitalized on tourism by setting aside portions of their yards to house African wildlife, creating makeshift zoos. Lions and elephants were absent, but hyenas and wildebeests weren’t uncommon sights.

After some scrolling, Gu Lang bookmarked the location of an outdoor recreational center about three kilometers north of the hotel. What caught his eye wasn’t just its well-stocked mini-zoo but also its upscale appearance—clearly, money wasn’t an object for the owner. Saving the route and contact information, Gu Lang tossed the tablet aside, shook off his drowsiness, and promptly dozed off on the bed.

….

By the time Wang Ping woke up, night had fully descended. His scalp felt tight, prompting him to yawn and scratch at it with one paw while stretching lazily with the other. As he extended his legs, however, disaster struck. Having forgotten he was sleeping in the sink—and still coated in soap suds—his rear slid out from under him, sending him tumbling headfirst into his own bathwater.

Plop!

Cough, cough!

Sputtering water mixed with soap, Wang Ping scrambled out of the sink, finally recalling that he’d intended to soak briefly before accidentally dozing off. “Damn,” he muttered, wiping bubbles from his face. “Why am I so sleepy these days?”

Shaking his head ruefully, Wang Ping drained the now-cold water, rinsed himself clean, and grabbed a dry towel to dry his fur. Emerging from the bathroom, he spotted Gu Lang sprawled across the bed, snoring softly.

Leaping onto the wall switch, Wang Ping flicked on the light and tossed the damp towel onto Gu Lang’s face, then perched on the bedside table to wait for him to wake.

A few moments later, Gu Lang stirred, squinting against the harsh light. Shielding his eyes, he turned to see Wang Ping sitting cross-legged on the table, staring intently at him. Being stared down by a pair of glowing nocturnal eyes made Gu Lang feel oddly unsettled.

“Uh… You’re awake…” Gu Lang croaked awkwardly, avoiding Wang Ping’s gaze as he stretched.

Wang Ping rapped his claws against the wooden table and patted his belly, demanding food without hesitation.

“Oh, hungry, huh? Hmm… I’m starving too. How about we go out to eat?” Gu Lang suggested.

Wang Ping rolled his eyes inwardly. Of course I want to eat out! Bring on the meat and seafood! But paranoia held him back. What if someone mistook him for a monster and tried to capture him?

Then again, why should he care? At worst, people might gawk—but wouldn’t they be staring at Gu Lang anyway? With this thought, Wang Ping’s mouth began watering uncontrollably.

What kind of life had he been living lately? Terrible food aside, the bland flavors were especially unbearable for someone hailing from a nation of food lovers. Enough was enough!

Jumping off the table, Wang Ping scurried toward the door, stopping only to beckon Gu Lang with a wave of his paw.

Cough, cough.

Behind him, Gu Lang picked up the backpack, emptied out the dirty clothes, and grinned mischievously at Wang Ping.

“Damn it!” Wang Ping glared daggers at Gu Lang but reluctantly climbed back onto the bed and into the backpack. He couldn’t exactly waltz around freely, after all.

Karatu’s streets were lit by lampposts—but only along the main road. Across from the hotel, illuminated by neon lights, stood a 24-hour restaurant named “Mushroom.” Its sign blinked invitingly, translating roughly to something like “Mushroom House.”

The restaurant bustled with patrons, many of them white tourists. Conversations buzzed in various accents, punctuated by calls for waiters—“Waiter!” “Attendant!”—which the staff somehow managed to decipher.

Gu Lang found a secluded corner table and ordered steak, a seafood platter, and pasta. The menu also featured exotic dishes like snake soup, which made Gu Lang’s eyebrows twitch nervously.

After placing the order, Gu Lang smiled charmingly at the server—a young Black girl in a crisp white uniform—and asked in English, “Excuse me, is it okay to dine with pets here?”

“Sir, this is a public place…” she started hesitantly.

Before she could finish, Gu Lang slid a stack of colorful bills across the table.

“This is your tip,” he said, grinning like a sly fox.

“As long as you keep your pet under control, I think it’ll be fine!” she replied quickly, pocketing the cash with a decisive nod.

“My pet is very well-behaved,” Gu Lang assured her, pulling over a chair and setting the backpack down. Unzipping it revealed Wang Ping, who straightened up indignantly, swatting away Gu Lang’s helping hand and hopping out with as much dignity as possible.

The server gasped audibly, clearly unprepared for such an unusual “pet.”

You call this thing obedient?!

“Sir…” she stammered, clutching her pouch, torn between returning the bribe and pretending nothing was amiss.

Ignoring her conflicted expression, Gu Lang placed the menu in front of Wang Ping and whispered in Chinese, “There are people around. Do me a favor and act like my pet, alright? Don’t throw a tantrum.”
