Chapter 73: Suspicion
As Tang Fang and his companions descended deeper into the tunnels carved by the roaches, aboard the Archimedes, Kraftmann was engrossed in reviewing a video recording.
The footage depicted flashes of gunfire, explosions as brilliant as fireworks, retreating soldiers from the 3789th Division, and relentless waves of bug-like creatures advancing forward. Kraftmann’s eyes were fixed on one figure in particular—the commander of the swarm. The individual wore imperial-standard powered armor but was leading an assault against the 3789th Division’s logistics base.
When Fleet Command had requested his assistance, Kraftmann had been puzzled. A man who’d lost his base could consider himself lucky to retain his rank, thanks only to his family connections. Assistance? What could he possibly offer Prince Walker Stuart? Serve as an errand boy? Offer strategic advice? Please. The Thunder Fleet was brimming with talent. What was he, chopped liver?
But when he reviewed the satellite footage showing those horrifying creatures leaping through trenches, tearing into imperial soldiers with claws and fangs, he froze.
Weren’t these the same alien creatures that had overrun the base on Planet 5? Why were they here on Planet Namie? And what about those unfamiliar units—the golden warriors? Where did these strange combatants come from? Most importantly, who was the figure clad in "Guardian Knight" powered armor?
Kraftmann began to understand. Fleet Command wanted him to analyze this footage alongside his experience on Planet 5, hoping he might uncover some clue about the origins of this mysterious force.
He locked himself in his quarters, replaying the footage over and over. Slowly, a realization dawned on him. That commanding presence on the battlefield, moving with calm authority—it matched someone from his memory.
Yes, it was Tang Yan, the taciturn man.
Kraftmann shot up from his seat and bolted out of the room, heading straight for the bridge.
……
Meanwhile, fifty meters below the surface of the 3789th Division’s logistics base…
The dim lighting of the tunnel cast a heavy shadow over Simmons’ grim face. Behind him trailed four guards, their fingers never straying from the triggers of their weapons.
The one-meter thick uranium alloy door reflected the faint glow of the lights, casting distorted silhouettes of the five men onto its surface.
More than ten minutes had passed since communications went dark. What had happened at command? How far had the enemy advanced? They had no answers.
This line of defense, manned by just the five of them, was their final stand. Beyond the tunnel lay the Epsilon ruins. For Prince Walker Stuart, for Colonel Francis, and for themselves, this position could not fall.
“Clank, clank…”
A strange noise echoed through the corridor, jolting Simmons’ nerves. He looked ahead, but the massive door remained firmly shut, unmoving.
“C-Captain, the sound seems to be coming from behind us.”
“What?” Simmons frowned. It didn’t make sense. There was only one entrance to the ruins. If they weren’t coming through the main gate, had they somehow dropped from the sky?
“Sanjo Yuji, Sikemos, let’s go check it out,” Simmons said cautiously. Better safe than sorry.
The two guards nodded and followed him deeper into the tunnel.
“Clank.” Another noise, accompanied by the thud of something heavy hitting the ground.
Simmons tensed, quickening his pace. As he rounded a corner, the sight before him sent a shiver down his spine. A gaping hole had appeared in the ceiling, and an ugly six-legged crawler leaped down, its weight slamming into the floor with a dull thud.
“Enemy attack! Enemy attack!” Simmons’ voice reverberated through the corridor.
Without hesitation, the two guards beside him opened fire. Bullets rained down on the creature, sparking against its armored shell.
“Damn it, what the hell is this thing? Its shell’s tougher than steel!” The guard detail, which had always stayed close to Francis, was encountering roaches for the first time—and learning firsthand how terrifying they were.
The bullets ricocheted off the creature’s carapace with metallic clangs.
The first roach opened its mouth, its massive body swaying. Its abdominal venom sac contracted suddenly, and with a “plop,” it spat out a gush of emerald-green acid.
Thinking quickly, Simmons rolled out of the way. But Sanjo Yuji wasn’t so lucky. The acid splashed over his powered armor, melting it like boiling water poured onto snow.
“Ahhhh!” Sanjo’s agonized scream echoed through the corridor. With a crash, his armor collapsed, revealing a corpse whose lower half had already dissolved away.
The yellowish-green liquid spread across the floor, dissolving flesh, fat, and bone at a visible rate.
Simmons pressed himself against the wall, his scalp tingling, his entire body chilled. Horrifying. Evil. These creatures felt like demons unleashed upon the world by Satan himself.
“Ahhh!” Another scream rang out as Sikemos met the same fate as Sanjo, reduced to a puddle of oozing residue.
Simmons tried desperately to suppress his fear, forcing himself to stay calm. But as more and more roaches dropped from the hole in the ceiling, despair overwhelmed him.
It was over. Everything was over.
As if confirming his thoughts, a hulking figure resembling a black bear lumbered down through the opening. Raising both arms, it launched two grenades that streaked through the air, leaving trails of silvery smoke.
“Boom! Boom!” Two consecutive explosions rocked the corridor.
Two guards who had just turned the corner were caught in the violent shockwave, flung into the hard wall. Their bodies hit the ground with sickening thuds, lifeless as discarded dolls.
“Thud, thud.”
Two more figures landed in the corridor.
When the last one, clad in "Guardian Knight" powered armor, touched the ground and slowly straightened, Simmons gritted his teeth, flipped his rifle to grenade mode, and pulled the trigger with all his might.
“Die, you demon!”
Time seemed to freeze. Through the visor of his helmet, Simmons thought he saw a faint smirk curl the enemy’s lips.
Then came the strangest sight yet. A flash of light illuminated the air, and a being clad in golden armor materialized out of nowhere. A crescent-shaped energy sword sliced through the air, cleaving the grenade neatly in half as though it were nothing more than a ripe papaya.
The golden light faded, and the golden warrior vanished. Time resumed its flow, and Simmons’ rolling body slammed into the opposite wall, coming to a stop.
“What… what was that? What was that?”
No one answered him. All he heard was the sharp “hiss” of metal spikes piercing his powered armor, fired from Arroz’s gauss rifle, punching bloody holes through his chest.
