Chapter 62: The Harvest Begins

The 20mm cannon spewed bursts of fire, its recoil causing the vehicle to rock up and down. Around Kim Youngho, the reconnaissance unit soldiers also pulled their triggers, unleashing a torrent of bullets like a heavy downpour onto an area no larger than five meters.

The fate of those three was sealed—death would be their only outcome.

After three days of fierce fighting, the original members of the reconnaissance unit had been decimated by death, injury, or disappearance, leaving less than thirty percent alive. In particular, the second platoon was left with only a few men. Most didn’t even know Tang Fang personally—no past grievances, no recent animosities.

But in the military, things had to look like they should. To them, Tang Fang and his companions were nothing more than pebbles on the roadside. Who were they? What were their names? Did they have families? None of that mattered. On a battlefield soaked in blood and fire, who cared about an unnamed corpse? The idea of a proper burial was laughable; all that awaited them was exposure to the void of space, where high-speed meteors would eventually smash their bodies into unrecognizable fragments.

In times of chaos, ordinary people had no dignity.

Kim Youngho laughed—a wild, unrestrained laugh. Torturing enemies undoubtedly helped calm the inner turmoil and release the pressure of war.

"Die! Go to hell and regret it there!" He imagined countless bullets tearing apart the iron shell of that detestable figure in front of him, puncturing it like a sieve leaking water.

His laughter was radiant, like a hibiscus flower blooming gracefully. But just as with most Morris slave women, the bloom came quickly, and its withering was equally swift.

Kim Youngho’s smile froze on his face, slowly contorting into a twitch.

Not far ahead, bullets struck the outer shell of the powered armor, sparking bursts of dazzling fireworks. But these dancing red sparks brought no joy to the reconnaissance soldiers. Instead, they felt their scalps prickle as a chilling sensation crept up from the soles of their feet, freezing their bodies, and turning them into blocks of icy meat.

Suddenly, more than a dozen figures appeared silently in front of the trio, like ghosts. Even more terrifying, the assault rifle bullets ricocheted off their bodies, leaving only faint scratches.

As for the rapid-fire cannon rounds, they were all blocked by those bulky, clumsy figures. The large-caliber bullets, capable of dismembering human bodies, only managed to knock over two or three unstable ones, who then rolled and got back up as if our attacks had given them a free ride on a trampoline—not only painless but seemingly enjoyable.

What was going on? Where did this sudden squad of twelve come from? And what were they wearing that made them so damn tough?

Their response came in the form of C-14 "Impaler" metal spikes raining down like arrows and Marauder silver-white concussion grenades ejaculating outward.

Explosions erupted everywhere, accompanied by screams. One after another, reconnaissance soldiers were hit by concussion grenades, blown into piles of organic debris mixed with armor fragments, blood, flesh, and bones.

And those metal spikes—so fast that even the high-speed cameras equipped on the powered armor couldn't capture them. Through the communicator came one piercing scream after another; soldiers struck by the spikes instantly turned into bloody fountains.

In the blink of an eye, all thirteen soldiers around Kim Youngho were dead without exception. Kim Youngho felt a chill run through his body, as if he had fallen into an ice cave.

How could this happen? He couldn’t figure it out, no matter how hard he tried. Tang Fang was supposed to have only three people—why did twelve strangers suddenly appear? And why was their powered armor as hard as battleship hulls? Their weapons—he hadn’t even heard of such things before.

That weapon resembling an assault rifle—what was its bullet velocity? It must exceed the speed of sound dozens of times.

And those massive creatures with quadruple grenade launchers mounted on their arms—didn’t those damned things need cooling? Those weren’t small-caliber bullets; they were grenades!

"Damn it... Damn it."

"Captain! Retreat immediately!" Sergeant Vagram's voice came through the communicator.

Kim Youngho snapped back to reality. Without further thought, he twisted his waist with all his might and ran desperately toward an armored vehicle.

Meanwhile, the reconnaissance soldiers ambushed on both flanks of the hillside opened fire simultaneously, covering his retreat.

Housen had gone berserk. The K-12 quadruple grenade launcher spat silver streaks, unleashing countless cone-shaped grenades toward the left slope. Silent explosions became the main melody of the battlefield.

In contrast, Arroz remained low-key. Standing on a protruding rock, he wielded the C-14 "Impaler" Gauss rifle. More sniper rifle than assault rifle, the old man’s sharp eyes resembled those of an eagle. Each trigger pull sent a reconnaissance soldier's head exploding, mixing brain matter with blood that flowed through tiny holes made by metal spikes.

Every scream through the communicator made Kim Youngho shudder. A 126:15 ratio—almost ten times the enemy’s strength—but they were being slaughtered. How could he accept this?

"Soya, Ronaldo, Karola... Launch missiles and blow them up!" He shouted orders while running. These powerful weapons were originally meant for the Sulru Empire army, but now he had no choice. To reverse the situation, this was his only option.

"There’s no way they can withstand anti-infantry fragmentation missiles."

The missile launchers on top of the armored vehicles rotated, their fire control radar locking onto Tang Fang and his group. Kim Youngho exhaled deeply, a gleam flashing in his eyes.

Perhaps it was an illusion, or maybe the lack of oxygen from running too fast caused hallucinations. Suddenly, the mountainsides on both sides of the armored vehicles trembled. One rocky mound after another rose from the already rugged terrain, expanding rapidly like blooming peonies or spreading chrysanthemums. Horrific creatures with backs resembling cleavers burst forth, spraying thick green jets of liquid at the four armored vehicles behind them.

They had six legs, spiky shells, and grotesque heads with three glowing purple eyes under the night sky.

"My God, what are these ugly creatures?" Mitsuo Futa’s astonished shout came through the communicator.

Kim Youngho shook his head to clear his mind. He finally realized the truth—it wasn’t an illusion or hallucination. These damned things were real, truly existing.

Green saliva rained down on the armored vehicles. The 200mm depleted uranium alloy armor melted away at a visible speed. As for the missile launchers on top—oh, damn—they were corroded by acid, igniting flames.

The armored vehicle’s body dissolved rapidly, holes riddling it. Behind the wreckage, the driver’s terrified face was exposed. The ammunition depot was breached, explosions erupting everywhere. Heat waves and flames instantly engulfed the entire cockpit.

They scrambled like ants on a hot pan, desperately trying to extinguish the flames and prevent the explosions from spreading. But it was futile. When flames consumed their comrades' lives and acid corroded their powered armor, screams and cries for help intertwined into a lullaby of death, echoing in the ears of every reconnaissance soldier.

Fear spread like a sudden plague. Doors opened, and one panic-stricken soldier after another tumbled out, scrambling toward the distance. By God, they were truly terrified. Their gun-holding hands trembled uncontrollably, and their steps stumbled.

If the enemy were human, they wouldn’t flee in fear. But they weren’t human. That acid could melt gold and corrode iron. Alloy steel armor was as thin as paper before them. And their terrifying range—hundreds of meters! Not to mention they could burrow underground to avoid artillery fire.

Facing such vehicle-destroying foes, humans were mere chickens for slaughter. Not running? Waiting to die? Everyone had parents who gave birth to them; no one wanted to die for nothing.

"What... What the hell is this?"

Before the terror of Roach subsided, another panicked cry came through the communicator.

Instinctively, Kim Youngho glanced toward the left slope. Under the cover of gunfire, hideous creatures leaped and bounded like tigers among sheep, tossing soldiers into the air one after another.

Claws tore through steel plates, sharp teeth shattered armor, and human blood splattered on their faces like hungry demons from countless centuries.

Kim Youngho trembled uncontrollably, feeling his limbs go cold. Suddenly, he remembered something Tang Fang once said to him: "Don’t provoke me, or you’ll die miserably."

Only now, only today, did he deeply understand the meaning of those words. He said it, and he did it.

Escape? Where to escape? Nearby, those ugly creatures spraying acid chased the fleeing soldiers emerging from the armored vehicles. It was pure slaughter. A spray of acid dissolved both man and powered armor, leaving not even remnants.

On both flanks were agile aliens, leaping like flying cats, while behind were Tang Fang and his group. Where to run? Where to escape? Could the armored vehicles outrun the acid jets? Outrun the grenades?

Soldiers’ cries for help, comrades’ screams… All of it relentlessly assaulted his mind.

Kim Youngho’s thoughts raced. Suddenly, he thought of a plan, a chance to break through.

He glanced at the still-functional Saber-Tooth A2 reconnaissance vehicle, gritted his teeth, and sprinted toward it. Opening the door, he jumped inside, took the driver’s seat, started the system, revved the engine, and released the brake. The vehicle surged forward like a mighty lion, kicking up countless stones as it charged straight at Tang Fang.

Counterattack? Ram Tang Fang to death? No, he wouldn’t do that. Only reckless fools would jump walls when cornered.

Kim Youngho was always alert, intelligent, and wise. Arroz and Housen had taken ten unfamiliar soldiers to clear out the remaining enemies on the slopes. Only two guards stood beside Tang Fang.

This was an opportunity. The acid from those ugly reptiles wouldn’t target him, and Arroz and Housen’s bullets wouldn’t dare touch him. If he could drive past Tang Fang, he could escape using the reconnaissance vehicle’s high mobility.

The headlights illuminated Tang Fang’s worn, old powered armor in detail, even the dark red bloodstains clearly visible. The visor on the helmet reflected silvery flashes.

Tang Fang seemed petrified, and the two marines beside him appeared frozen, unmoving.

A cruel smile spread across Kim Youngho’s face as he screamed hysterically: "You want to die? Then I’ll grant your wish!"

The front wheels of the reconnaissance vehicle hit a protruding rock, launching it four feet into the air, nose down and tail up, charging straight at the three.

Housen and Arroz looked back, frowning simultaneously. What was that guy planning? Why didn’t he dodge? With the Guardian Knight’s nature, it was impossible to withstand the impact of the Saber-Tooth.

The distance between them grew shorter. Looking at the figure in the center of the windshield gradually enlarging, Kim Youngho couldn’t help but let out a crazed laugh: "Tang Fang, you bastard, die!"

Time seemed to freeze at this moment. Blood sprayed into the air, flashes of gunfire lit up the slopes, Roach’s head swayed, Zerglings opened their jaws with bloodthirsty roars, the reconnaissance vehicle’s front wheels spun rapidly, and behind the window, Kim Youngho’s face twisted in extreme distortion. This chaotic scene formed a slow-motion movie sequence, advancing along a time axis slowed countless times.

The distance between the vehicle and Tang Fang shortened—eight meters, six meters, five meters, three meters…

Suddenly, a ripple of light flashed in midair. Three feet in front of Tang Fang, golden light blazed fiercely. A solitary warrior clad in golden armor, two whips swirling in the air, slowly raised his right arm, holding an energy sword enveloped in moon-white flames.

"Shh..."

It was as if a faint sound echoed through heaven and earth. Infinite sparks erupted from the point where the energy sword met the vehicle, cascading like a waterfall to both sides.

Crimson patterns spread along the gash, accompanied by Kim Youngho’s expression of mingled terror and manic laughter.

Two fireballs rose into the air, the explosion affecting the zealot but only stirring up gentle waves on its plasma shield.

The vehicle’s cross-section, coated in crimson, split apart like a corpse sawed open, scattering countless sparks into the air and crashing diagonally behind Tang Fang into a pile of bare rocks, sending stones flying.

Half of Kim Youngho’s body slid off the seat, hanging upside-down on the safety belt. His right arm was gone, arterial blood gushing out like waves, staining the ground beneath him within moments.

The visor on his helmet shattered into pieces from the explosion and impact. Beneath the cracks lay his wide-open, unseeing eyes and a blood-splattered, grotesque side profile.

The pursuit in the distance was nearing its end. Of the reconnaissance unit’s original 126 men, 112 corpses were left scattered across the hilly terrain, with only 14 managing to escape.

Tang Fang signaled Arroz and Housen, recalled the combat units, and without even glancing at Kim Youngho’s corpse, continued forward along the predetermined route.

In this battle, Kim Youngho’s reconnaissance unit was almost completely annihilated, while Tang Fang’s group paid only the price of losing five Zerglings.
