Chapter 60: A Narrow Encounter

The moment Tang Fang retracted the Overseer, in the underground command center of the 3789th Division’s logistics base, a gaunt, middle-aged man with bloodshot eyes sat frowning over a reconnaissance report from a satellite. He remained silent, his expression grim.

With the battlefront shifting from the equatorial zone to the vicinity of the logistics base, the few remaining geostationary satellites orbiting Planet Namie had been redirected to monitor the situation around the base.

Just moments ago, one of the satellites had transmitted a suspicious ground scan to the command center. The image showed a red blotch marked by the satellite about 50 kilometers away from the base. Calculations estimated the size of the blotch to be approximately 40 meters.

This was no ordinary armored shuttle, main battle tank, or even an assault vehicle. On the eastern front, where the conflict had reached a deadlock, and with the southern, western, and northern fronts under siege, no detail could be overlooked. The slightest carelessness could spell doom for the 3789th Division.

A suspicious object measuring 40 meters? Was it a vehicle or an aircraft? Neither before nor during the war had the Silverwing Tempest Infantry Division deployed any weapon of this scale. This was likely a secret weapon newly introduced by the Saint Violet Fleet.

Decryption efforts were still underway, but the base could not fall!

"Lieutenant Shelley, zoom in on the satellite imagery and conduct a detailed scan of the area."

"Yes, sir."

The red outline flashed on the central monitor as the image slowly magnified.

As the satellite's high-powered optical lens swept over the target area, everyone in the command center froze. It was gone—the nearly 40-meter behemoth had vanished without a trace.

Young Lieutenant Shelley refused to give up. She remotely directed the satellite to perform a rough scan of the surrounding 100-kilometer radius. Still nothing.

The massive object had disappeared like morning mist under the blazing sun—silently, without a trace. Had the reconnaissance satellite made an error, or had the target slipped away? If it was the latter, how could it have traveled 100 kilometers in just one or two minutes? Impossible!

"Communications officer, notify the reconnaissance company. Suspend their current mission and redirect them at full speed to location N809. They must investigate this matter thoroughly!" Edward licked his dry lips and issued the order.

As the deputy commander of the 3789th Division, Edward Oliver's primary responsibility was to defend the logistics base. No suspicious target could be ignored. The decryption process was at its most critical stage, and the ruins must not be compromised!

"Yes, sir," the communications officer replied, relaying Edward's instructions to the reconnaissance comapny, which had been maneuvering behind enemy lines on the southern secondary battlefield, preparing for a "pincer attack."

……

Meanwhile, Tang Fang and his two companions, cloaked in the camouflage function of their powered armor, were traversing a hilly region, swiftly advancing toward the southern battlefield of the base.

Changeling had already been dispatched as a scout to gather details about the ongoing battles. Tang Fang needed to understand what was happening—why had the Thunder Fleet and the Saint Violet Fleet suddenly turned on each other, engaging in open warfare? How had the secrets of the ruins been leaked?

Arroz and Housen followed silently behind him, heads down, focused solely on moving forward.

The engagement zone between the Silverwing Tempest Infantry Division's reserve company and the 3789th Division's southern defensive forces lay 20 kilometers directly in front of the base. Beyond that stretched a rugged expanse of rolling hills, crisscrossed with ravines.

Originally, the 3789th Division had planned to use this hilly terrain in the later stages of the war to delay, snipe, and execute flexible tactics to slow the advance of the Silverwing Tempest Infantry Division's forces.

But who could have anticipated that the enemy would concentrate most of their forces on the eastern front, breaking through with overwhelming momentum until they reached the base's perimeter? As a result, the carefully prepared sniper positions became useless, rendered obsolete by the enemy's relentless push.

Fate loved to play tricks on humanity—sometimes vulgar, sometimes noble, but more often than not, it left people utterly baffled.

The stalemate on the eastern front had driven the high command of the Silverwing Tempest Infantry Division to urgently seek new flanking battlefields in hopes of breaking through the 3789th Division's impenetrable defense network.

Every available unit had been thrown into the fray: the division headquarters' elite guard company, the battered remnants of the "Silverwing" special operations battalion, and reinforcements from the Saint Violet Fleet's airborne divisions—all dispatched by General Wilder Lester.

The eastern front served as the main battleground, while the southern, northern, and western flanks erupted into chaos, centered around the 3789th Division's logistics base. The entire theater was a maelstrom of scattered engagements.

Edward was under immense pressure. He hadn't slept in two days and nights, his appetite was nonexistent, and the combined toll of fatigue and anxiety had left his body mildly dehydrated.

His staff officers proposed a plan: exploiting gaps in the enemy's southern and western deployments, small units would use the hilly terrain as cover to maneuver behind enemy lines and launch a multi-pronged assault. This would relieve pressure on the base while dealing a significant blow to enemy morale.

Edward adopted the suggestion, sacrificing a small defensive position in the southwestern sector of the base to facilitate a successful covert deployment. Over 800 troops, roughly equivalent to a reinforced battalion, were sent out to strike the southern and western flanks.

Once the orders reached the frontlines, one of the two companies assigned to the southern "pincer operation" continued its deep flanking maneuver, while the other redirected southeastward toward the area where the satellite had detected the suspicious activity.

On the other side, though the Overseer had provided Tang Fang with an overall analysis of the battlefield on Planet Namie—including Sulru Empire's offensive directions and Monya Empire's defensive deployments—it only offered real-time data. While he could grasp the broader strategic plans of both sides, finer details remained elusive.

For instance, they had assumed the engagement zone lay in the open plains north of the hills—a post-battle mountainous region considered safe. The trio had moved brazenly, as if strolling through unoccupied territory. But fate is unpredictable. After rounding a winding path along the valley floor and ascending a ridge slope, they hadn’t gone far when strange noises echoed from both sides. Five soldiers clad in Monya Empire-standard powered armor suddenly appeared before them.

Tang Fang and his companions froze, staring in astonishment at the five figures ahead.

The reconnaissance soldiers on the opposing side were equally stunned. What kind of bizarre group was this? The figure at the front clearly wore the Empire's "Guardian Knight" powered armor, suggesting he might be one of their own.

But what about the other two? One was bulky, his massive frame resembling a bear constantly wriggling its hindquarters. The other was swathed in layers of gear, clutching a large rifle, yet moved with remarkable agility.

Were they allies? Sulru Empire soldiers? They didn’t look like either.
