Chapter 58: A Sudden Shift in the Battle

“What’s going on?” Arroz was startled awake by the blaring alarm, his brow furrowing as he asked the question.

Tang Fang’s mind raced, and with a flick of his thoughts, he switched back to the holographic projection interface of the entire ruins. There, hovering above the crust near the surface, a pulsating red light enveloped a specific area.

“The system’s alarm protocol has been triggered. It seems someone has infiltrated the data core of the main control center.”

“The main control center?”

Tang Fang nodded. “As I explained earlier, Planet Namie is essentially the Epsilon people’s refining factory. The room we’re currently in is just one of the control rooms for a single refining module—there are over a hundred such rooms in total. Above these nodes lies the central control hub, responsible for communication, data collection, and monitoring the planet’s environment. For security reasons, it’s not located underground but on the surface.”

“On the surface? Is that where we encountered the statue guardians? That area is within the acidic vapor zone—how could anyone possibly pass through unscathed?”

Tang Fang shook his head with a bitter smile. “That’s not the main control center. It’s where the Epsilon people dock their cargo ships to transport Element Zero and its isotopes.”

“Then where is it?”

To better illustrate the location of the main control center, Tang Fang instructed the system to switch to a flat map view.

“This is… the 3789th Division’s logistics base?” The two men suddenly understood.

“The main control center holds all the operational parameters of the ruins’ equipment, as well as various technical reserves related to construction, maintenance, and upgrades for the refining process. I can’t allow this data to fall into military hands.”

Arroz thought for a moment. “Since you’ve already obtained the highest system privileges, why not just delete the data?”

Tang Fang shook his head again. “The main control center operates independently from the ruins’ refining system. It’s shielded from all external access. Unless we physically enter it, there’s nothing I can do.”

“Those Empire goons—what can they do even if they get in? With their mediocre decryption skills, they’ll barely scrape together some scraps. Why bother worrying about them?”

Tang Fang fell silent. Housen was right; with the Monya Empire’s capabilities, at best they’d decipher one or two peripheral technologies. Compared to the vast tech tree required for the entire refining operation, it was like a drop in the ocean.

But as a future enemy, Tang Fang’s nature was unforgiving. He didn’t want to leave even a single strand of hair for the Empire, let alone half a strand.

First, his current resources were sufficient. As long as he avoided direct confrontation, dealing with the 3789th Division wouldn’t be an issue. Second, the corpses of the one-eyed monsters weren’t going anywhere—they wouldn’t sprout wings and fly off. Whether he collected those resources now or later made little difference.

Prioritizing his tasks, Tang Fang decided that preventing the Empire from acquiring Epsilon technology was the most urgent matter. With that in mind, he located the nearest lift platform to the main control center, marked it, and transmitted the route to the navigation system of his powered armor. After signaling the others, he took the elevator to the upper level, activated the rune gate, and quickly exited the control room.

On the way to the lift platform, Tang Fang tallied up his remaining combat units. After the fierce battle with the one-eyed monster, his forces were severely depleted.

Zerg forces: 1 Drone, 8 Queens, 5 Spine Crawlers, 8 Roaches, 8 Overlords (Total supply caps: 33/66).

Terran forces: 1 SCV, 6 Marines, 6 Marauders (Total supply caps: 19/82).

Protoss forces: 1 Probe (Total supply caps: 1/42).

His combat strength had been reduced by nearly 70%.

Comparing this to his current resource totals of 6,570 minerals and 8,450 gas, Tang Fang first upgraded the Zerg Hatchery to a Lair. Then, he quickly activated the research hotkeys for "Ventral Sacs" and "Pneumatized Carapace." His resources plummeted to 3,420 minerals and 5,350 gas.

This time, he didn’t feel the usual sting of spending resources. Nothing mattered more than survival. By researching "Ventral Sacs" and "Pneumatized Carapace," the Overlords gained the abilities to transport units and increase speed. This meant that if they encountered an overwhelming enemy, Tang Fang could retreat swiftly.

As for replenishing his forces, he wasn’t in a rush. Along the way to the main control center, there was another control room where he could pause, gather resources, and then continue.

...

After ten minutes of full-speed travel, the narrow mechanical workshop came to an end. The trio activated the rune gate, stepped into the corridor, turned right at the T-junction, and entered a relay point in the latitudinal traffic network connecting the various refining modules.

They stepped onto the lift platform, set their destination, maxed out the speed, and Tang Fang pressed the activation button on the control panel after ensuring the others were steady.

The lift platform slowly ascended into an orange-yellow crystalline tunnel and then accelerated rapidly northward.

The speed increased steadily, reaching a terrifying 800 km/h within just three minutes. Whether due to the tunnel’s mysterious biotic field regulation or Tang Fang’s adjustments to the platform’s inertia compensation, Arroz and Housen felt no strain from the high-speed movement. On the contrary, they chatted freely and moved around without issue.

The platform continued to accelerate—1,000 km/h, 1,200 km/h—until it reached a horrifying speed of Mach 3 (3,600 km/h).

Half an hour later, the speed gradually decreased, and the platform veered eastward at a fork. Ten minutes later, it came to a stop.

Following the navigation system’s route, the trio walked north through the mechanical workshop, turned left into a control room, collected resources, and then pressed onward without delay.

Since Tang Fang had eliminated the one-eyed monsters in the ruins, the bat demons seemed to have vanished, frightened away. The trio arrived at their destination without incident, boarded the lift platform, and quickly ascended toward the surface.

At this point, the resource count in the system showed 6,920 minerals and 9,350 gas. Tang Fang spent 2,500 minerals and 2,500 gas to research the Zerg ground unit ability "Burrow" and the Roach’s "Tunneling Claws."

Tang Fang had his reasons for researching these skills. On Planet Namie, there were two potential enemies: the 3789th Division of the Monya Empire and the "Silverwing Tempest Infantry Division," a mechanized infantry division of the Sulru Empire.

Both were his enemies. With his current forces, engaging either head-on would be foolish.

His advantage lay in knowing his enemies while remaining hidden himself. With units from three distinct races—Terran, Protoss, and Zerg—each with unique abilities, he could employ flexible tactics centered around ambushes and surprise attacks. This would allow him to strike devastating blows while minimizing casualties among his troops.

For the current situation, the Roach was the ideal ambush unit.

The Roach, a mid-range Zerg combat unit, was heavily armored, capable of spitting acid to attack distant enemies, serving both as a tank and a frontline attacker. It was an incredibly cost-effective unit.

Its only drawback was its inability to attack air units, but considering its bargain price of 75 minerals, 25 gas, and 2 supply caps, that was negligible.

The Roach had one active skill and three passive skills.

The active skill was "Burrow," granting invisibility.

Passive Skill One: "Glial Reconstitution," which increased the Roach’s movement speed.

Passive Skill Two: "Tunneling Claws," allowing the Roach to move underground after burrowing, unlike other Zerg ground units.

Passive Skill Three: "Roach Regeneration," enabling the Roach to heal rapidly while burrowed.

In summary, combining "Burrow" with "Tunneling Claws" created a lethal ambush tactic. Enemies might have radar to detect aerial threats, but how could they defend against attacks from below?

The Roach’s size was comparable to a compact car, and its acid spray could melt metal and corrode steel. Against armored vehicles, it was far more effective than any armor-piercing shell.

Imagine a group of tank-killer Roaches suddenly emerging from the ground, launching a close-range ambush on an armored column. What a scene that would be!

Armored divisions? Mechanized infantry? Against Roaches capable of burrowing and moving underground, they were nothing but a joke!

Eight Roaches were clearly insufficient. After spawning another Overlord to raise the supply cap to 74, Tang Fang immediately added 16 more Roaches. Next, he spawned 18 Zerglings as mobile forces.

Watching his resources drop to 2,470 minerals and 6,450 gas, Tang Fang nodded and ceased his operations.

Meanwhile, the lift platform slowed down. As the overhead gate opened, the trio finally returned to the surface.

However, as they emerged from the concealed lift shaft and steadied themselves, a flash streaked across the sky. A flaming armed shuttle crashed into a nearby rocky mountain, exploding into a fiery wreck.

Above them, the endless void shimmered with explosions—ships and missiles bursting like fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

Housen looked at the sky, then the ground, then the wreckage of the armed shuttle, and finally the blazing horizon. His face was a mix of disbelief and shock. “How did they start fighting already? It’s been only three days! The army fighting is one thing—but why are the fleets in the sky battling too?”
