Chapter 18: It’s Just Accidental Gas Explosion (Part 1)

There was simply no way to shut the incessantly chattering goat up—after all, Leon couldn’t really stew it. So, with a look of exasperation, he carried the babbling goat head and hurried down the dimly lit corridor of the Anomaly Cleansing Bureau, scanning the nameplates outside each office.

Harry Morgan (Level 2 Crisis Handler)
Emma Alman (Level 1 Disaster Handler)
Leon Lion (Level 3 Incident Responder) … Hmm, this is it. Oh, my office is right next to Emma’s.

Glancing at the familiar name on the neighboring plaque, Leon’s lips unconsciously curved into a faint smile.

It wasn’t that he had any particular feelings for her—it was just that having such a gentle, beautiful, and reliable senior as his neighbor when he first joined the bureau was inherently delightful.

Huh… is something flashing inside her office?

Peering through the small window on the corridor side, Leon caught sight of an odd flicker coming from Emma’s office. Curious, he took a step back and peeked inside. Then, without changing his expression, he swiftly returned to his own office, his face stiffening as he entered.

The reason? On Emma’s desk lay a monstrous sickle, over three meters long, its blade rusted brown. The flash he’d seen was sunlight reflecting off the sickle’s edge.

Moreover, her office wasn’t filled with tasteful greenery, elegant dresses, or cute children’s items as one might expect. Instead, it was crammed with bizarre, even terrifying objects: blood-soaked bandages, broken hammer, open old coffins, leather-bound books of questionable origin, skeletal specimens of unknown creatures, and even half of a guillotine-like execution platform—the kind where a massive blade is hoisted high and then released by cutting the rope holding it, ending with a loud snap.

Well, while Emma might be gentle in personality, the peculiar nature of the bureau’s work meant her gentleness could only manifest in her demeanor. Leon still vividly remembered the finger-shaped dents she had left on the hard metal cabinet last night when he rushed to the intensive care unit.

After reaffirming his resolve never to provoke her, Leon rummaged through his own office and found, exactly where the red-haired chief had mentioned, a large suitcase nearly identical to Emma’s.

Made of brass-fitted corners, sturdy wooden frames, and covered in crocodile-like tough hide, the suitcase was deceptively simple. Though it lacked the ornate carvings or metal buckles common in modern luggage, its solid construction spoke volumes about its costliness.

The only decorative feature on the exterior was a golden emblem pressed into the side of the handle pad—the logo of the Virgo Cleansing Bureau: a Dung Beetle Lady pushing a dung ball.

Inside, the suitcase contained multiple custom-designed compartments. The leftmost slot, complete with two horn-like protrusions, was clearly designed for the black goat. Next to it lay a disassembled long-range nail gun and six melon-sized silver gas canisters.

Seeing the familiar “sniper,” Leon felt a warm surge of gratitude. This was undoubtedly something Emma had prepared for him. She had been incredibly considerate, even taking the time to chat with him extensively after finishing her investigation yesterday, despite being covered in blood. She had shared numerous details about conducting “cleanup work” and repeatedly warned him about areas requiring extra caution.

And now, knowing he was about to go on a mission, she had gone out of her way to leave her weapon for him. Such kindness was overwhelming. When she needed help, Leon vowed to put in double the effort to repay her thoughtfulness!

With heartfelt appreciation, Leon secured the suitcase and wedged the still-complaining black goat into the designated slot, then slammed it shut.

A miraculous thing happened the moment the suitcase clicked shut—it was as if the goat had been instantly silenced. All the noise in his ears and the curses in his mind vanished in an instant, leaving the world blissfully quiet.

Perfect~ With this, he could take the black goat out without worrying about it spouting nonsense and scaring Anna.

Satisfied, Leon grabbed the suitcase handle and gave it a firm tug.

It didn’t budge.

???

Staring at the immovable suitcase, Leon’s eyes widened in disbelief. He gripped the large handle with both hands and pulled with all his might.

Finally, after exerting every ounce of strength—including what he used to call upon during desperate moments—the massive suitcase budged slightly off the ground before crashing back down with a thunderous bang, shaking the entire office and sending dust floating into the air.

“…”

Solid wood frame, crocodile-like skin, metal fittings, plus a goat head and a giant sniper rifle inside… If this thing weighs less than fifty or sixty kilograms, I’ll eat the damn suitcase!

Looking at his malnourished arms and then at the stubbornly immobile suitcase lying there as if mocking him, the “delicate and weak” Leon sighed in resignation. Abandoning the idea of carrying it, he instead grabbed his credentials and stormed out toward the police department’s cafeteria.

Eat! I’m going to eat like crazy! Bulk up and become a strong man! Then train hard! At the very least, I need to be able to lift this suitcase on my own!

Otherwise, when Emma asks for my help and I can’t even carry the suitcase, I’ll have to shamelessly beg her to carry it for me. How the hell will I live with myself then?

---

“Anna… burp… Look what I brought you!”

Pushing open the door to the private ward, Leon saw the frail girl on the bed light up with joy. A smile unconsciously spread across his face as well.

Holding up the rosewood lunchbox, he gently shook it. Before Anna could respond, he revealed the surprise with a grin.

“It’s the silver cod soup you loved so much as a kid! I double checked—they’re cod freshly caught from the outer river this morning, cooked with fresh milk!”

Silver cod and milk… That must’ve been expensive.

Hearing Leon’s words, Anna hesitated. “Brother, you just started working yesterday, and you’ve already helped me transfer wards and brought such an expensive fish soup… Isn’t this a bit…”

“No worries, none of this is your concern. Your job now is to focus on getting better… Here, let me see your leg.”

Placing the triple-tiered lunchbox borrowed from the police cafeteria on the bedside table, Leon lifted a corner of the blanket to examine her bandaged right thigh. Concern etched his face as he asked, “Does it hurt? It’s all my fault. If I hadn’t sent you to this hospital, you wouldn’t have…”

“It doesn’t hurt. Hey!” Startled by how quickly Leon moved, the frail girl’s cheeks flushed slightly. She hastily pulled the blanket back over her leg and grabbed his arm, scolding him.

“Brother! My skirt was cut open during the bandaging, so don’t just flip my blanket up! And stop blaming yourself for everything. You couldn’t have known the hospital’s gas pipes would explode when you brought me here. This was just an accident—it’s not your fault.”
