Chapter 32: Midnight Gunshots
The latter half of the night was cool, with a gentle breeze drifting through the air. The sky was overcast, thick clouds obscuring the moon, leaving only a sparse scattering of stars to dot the heavens. Occasionally, a restless star would streak across the sky, hurtling toward the distant horizon as if eager to clock out for the night.
From the depths of the forest came the occasional hoot of an owl and the desperate cries of small animals meeting their end, as though accusing fate of its cruelty. But fate, much like mosquitoes, was devoid of emotion—it paid no heed to such grievances.
Gu Lang was jolted awake by a sharp pain in his stomach.
Having been force-fed a bizarre concoction by Wang Ping, the fact that his stomach had held out this long was a testament to his ironclad constitution.
It felt as though an ever-expanding balloon had been stuffed into his gut. If he didn’t address his personal hygiene soon, his stomach might just explode.
“Paper… where’s the paper? Where’s any paper…?”
Gu Lang opened his eyes to pitch darkness. The silhouettes of distant trees and the faint glimmer of stars above told him it was still nighttime.
The urgent pressure in his abdomen sent him scrambling through the car in a frantic search, leaving no room for other thoughts. Wounds, illness—none of that mattered now. His body was no longer under the control of his brain.
Was there any paper in the car?
The answer was… absolutely not.
A roll of toilet paper Gu Lang had originally packed for himself had been completely used up by Wang Ping over the past two days. After all, despite his current form, Wang Ping’s soul was once that of a fastidious young man. He could tolerate being licked by Rosette or smeared with blood, but he absolutely could not abide leaving the bathroom without wiping.
This wasn’t about cleanliness—it was a matter of basic human dignity. Who doesn’t wipe after using the toilet?
But considering Wang Ping’s current one-handed operation skills, a single roll of paper was clearly insufficient.
After fumbling around for some time and finding no trace of paper, Gu Lang’s hand landed on a furry object in the dark. Without giving it much thought, he grabbed it and stumbled out of the car.
As he stepped onto the ground, his legs gave way, nearly sending him sprawling. Having spent an entire day curled up in the backseat and then crammed into the driver’s seat by Wang Ping, the blood flow to his legs had been severely restricted, leaving them numb. The moment he set foot on the hard ground, they buckled beneath him.
At the same time, Wang Ping, who had been unceremoniously yanked out of the passenger seat by his tail, was utterly bewildered.
He had been peacefully dozing in the front seat when suddenly he felt a tightening sensation around his rear end, followed by a sudden loss of gravity. Opening his eyes, he saw Gu Lang, looking like a complete idiot, clutching his tail and shakily stepping out of the car.
Damn it, was Gu Lang still half-asleep? Where did he think he was going?
Wait… had he recovered?
Before Wang Ping could even feel relieved, he watched as Gu Lang, grimacing in pain, shuffled a few steps while clutching the side of the car. Then, with trembling hands, Gu Lang undid his pants. Inadvertently, Wang Ping found himself face-to-face with something he’d rather not have seen.
Wang Ping: “….”
Damn it! Put me down! Right now! Wang Ping began to struggle, but with his tail firmly in Gu Lang’s grip, he had no leverage.
Gu Lang had initially intended to go further away, at least to find some cover or a sheltered spot. But those few steps from the car seemed to be his limit. The growing pressure in his stomach forced him to focus all his strength on a single point, nearly causing him to drop Wang Ping.
Looking around, everything was pitch black. Without hesitation, Gu Lang quickly dropped his pants and squatted down.
“Gu Lang… I’m gonna kill you, you bastard…”
Perhaps his earlier concentration had dulled his senses, but Gu Lang finally noticed something was off with the “paper” in his hand. It seemed to be thrashing wildly.
Raising his arm, Gu Lang locked eyes with Wang Ping, who looked like an enraged demon.
…
And then it hit him.
In that moment, Gu Lang remembered everything: where he was, what he had done, and whom he had encountered.
“Heh…”
After a dry chuckle, Gu Lang’s mouth moved hesitantly. After a few seconds, he managed to utter in a voice barely louder than a mosquito’s: “Bro, it wasn’t on purpose…”
Do you have any idea what would’ve happened if this was on purpose? You’d already be dead!
Wang Ping mentally snorted and kicked Gu Lang’s arm with his hind legs. Gu Lang quickly placed Wang Ping gently on the ground in front of him.
Wang Ping stood up, ready to say something, when suddenly a gunshot rang out from the southwest. Both of them were certain it had come from a distance.
“Holy crap!” Gu Lang let out a startled yelp, attempting to stand up, but another rumble in his stomach forced him back down.
“What was that? Was it a gunshot?” He whispered, unsure whether he was asking Wang Ping or simply muttering to himself.
Wang Ping ignored him, turning his gaze toward the southwest, his expression dark. He was all too familiar with that sound.
A low growl came from behind. Rosette emerged from the northern woods, standing beside Wang Ping and staring warily in the direction of the gunfire.
Gu Lang watched as the leopard passed by him without a second glance, instantly falling silent. He still couldn’t get used to being so close to such a carnivorous predator. Even knowing she wouldn’t attack him, his instinctive defenses remained on high alert.
But while Gu Lang couldn’t adjust, this leopard had already grown accustomed to his presence.
Attempting to discreetly pull up his pants, Gu Lang awkwardly realized he was missing something crucial.
“Poachers?” Wang Ping’s mind was filled with suspicion.
If news of the camp being abandoned had spread, it wouldn’t be surprising for poachers to return.
And given how clear the gunshots were, they must have been fired nearby.
“Please don’t tell me they’re heading for the camp!”
BANG!
BANG, BANG, BANG!
Just as that thought crossed his mind, several more shots rang out.
Wang Ping could tell that these later shots were distinct from the first. There was more than one person out there.
“ROAR!” Rosette suddenly let out a fierce roar toward the distance. Wang Ping quickly stood up, wrapping his arms around her neck to calm her down, fearing she might lose control.
Many animals, when faced with a formidable opponent, liked to roar to display their ferocity and intimidate their foes, hoping to achieve victory without a fight.
But against poachers, such a tactic would be suicidal. Wang Ping believed that in this situation, where the enemy was strong and they were weak, it was better to hide.
Dragging Rosette toward the northern woods, Wang Ping didn’t forget to wave at Gu Lang.
“Uh… uh… Boss!” Seeing the big shots retreating, Gu Lang dared not stay behind alone and hastily called out, “I don’t have any paper… can you help me…?”
What the hell kind of time is this to worry about wiping your ass? Wang Ping was both amused and exasperated, feeling a strange sense of familiarity.
During the two days Gu Lang had been unconscious, Wang Ping hadn’t heard anyone communicate with him through words. His interactions with Rosette sometimes felt like two deaf-mutes playing charades without knowing sign language.
Now, hearing Gu Lang's whiny voice again, it strangely felt… comforting.
Fine, might as well treat him like a special-needs child!
Wang Ping turned and jumped back into the car, rummaging through the first aid kit until he found a leftover roll of bandages, which he promptly tossed to Gu Lang.
“Thank you, Boss!” Gu Lang had become immune to the fact that Wang Ping could understand him. Calling him “Boss” now rolled off his tongue effortlessly.
After hastily wiping himself, Gu Lang pulled up his pants and stood up.
“Ahhh…” Taking a step forward, Gu Lang’s expression twisted again, and he let out a soft cry. As his body fully relaxed, the fiery pain and soreness throughout his limbs and back hit him all at once.
His arms hurt, his legs hurt, his back hurt! Everything hurt!
With teary eyes, Gu Lang glanced at Wang Ping, then reached up to touch the top of his head and the back of his skull.
There, at the back of his head, was a large, swollen lump. The moment his fingers brushed against it, the pain was so intense it made him question his very existence.
“What happened? Did we get into another car accident?”
